So on thursday nite, me along with 9 friends took the 5 hr bus ride from Viña del Mar to Mendoza, Chile. The ride took us through the Andes and we lasted through the the small windy roads with a bottle of pisco and coke (cola that is!). We were told that we would arrive around 7 or 8 in the morning, but even after Chilean and Argentine customs, we found ourselves at the bus terminal in Mendoza at 6 am (5 am for us since Chile is an hour behind!). So we hung out until about 8 when we went to the hostel to check in. We slept until 1pm and then went out for lunch and some shopping. We had an asado (the best bar-b-que there is --- you just cant beat argentina meat!!!!) ... read more

Another 15 hour bus trip and we found ourselves in Mendoza. The first thing that you wake up to the overnight trip from BA is a view of the Andes - not bad eh? As soon as we had ourselves installed we were off to the tourist board to find out about wine trips. Since Ginny had just 1 ½ days time for her was short and sweet. We were told that we could go to the Bodegas (wineries) with a local bus which was much cheaper and would allow us to see three bodegas on the bus route - whereas all the organized trips only included two bodegas. So thinking ourselves extremely clever to have discovered this off we went. Well…. It did not go quite according to plan. On the ´bus route´ was an ... read more

hey all, what we have seen in and around mendoza is the most stunning landscape we have seen so far and unfortunately i have no photos to post because our digital camera is possibly now being sold on a street corner in buenos aires. i will do my best to describe.. mendoza is a small town a little out from the base of the andes. it is surrounded by vinyards and further beyond that the andes shoot up. being wine country its no surprise within an hour of dumping our stuff in the hostel we were already at the biggest vineyard sipping the goods. we went to 2 vineyards, the second being much smaller, family owned, far more informative and with much better tasting wine. however, to be honest, south american wine in general is nothing ... read more

We arrived in Mendoza after travelling all night from Buenos Aires. The local tourist information office referred us to a hostel called Lifehouse which had a pool. This was very welcome, Mendoza was baking! We chilled for the rest of that day and decided to do a wine tour the next day and a hike the day after (to get rid of some of the post-Christmas podge). Wine 1-01 After some admin stuff in the morning (sorting out buses, planes, accomodation for the next leg) we headed off on our tour of two bodegas (vineyards). The first bodega, Lopez was a factory bodega. When we arrived a huge lorry with a huge tank (not unlike a milk lorry!) was leaving filled with wine. The bodega had a small museum of machinery used in wine making, ... read more

2 of my favourite things are spending time in mountains, whether it be hiking, biking, rafting or whatever.. and drinking wine. So given the above, it was no surprise when we ended up, after another marathon bus journey at the Western end of the argentinian plains in Mendoza. This is a farely non-descript, sleepy, leafy and pleasant town, that sits at the foot of the Andes, and in particular, the mighty Aconcagua, at 7000m, the highest mountain in the world outside the Himalayas and Karakorum. Mendoza is also the home of the Argentinian wine industry. Unfortunately, we dont have a huge amount of time to spend in any one place now.. we have 3 weeks to cover a colossal amount of ground, so our time in Mendoza was limited. But we did manage to get into ... read more
