Ok, starting on the new blog and this is my first entry... Yesterday, I went white water rafting on a brown river- the Rio Mendoza. It flows from Cerro Aconcagua- the gargantuan mountain here in Mendoza province, in eastern Argentina-- the tallest mountain outside the Himalayas at around 22,000 feet! Anyway, I love rafting and of course had a hoot of a time on this trip. We had the english speaking boat and I was a little disappointed about this because I was really hoping to come out having mastered those elusive spanish words for right and left - derecho and izquierda - not to mention, words for ¨faster¨(mas rapido), ¨harder¨(mas fuerte) and forward and backward (adelante and atrás). But this was serious rafting and we couldn´t mess around with slow brain translations when we had ... read more

So, where were we? Really rugged rock faces here as the valley gets narrower and the road climbs higher, tortuous, angry old mountains, great cracks and crevices, agonised twists in the layers of colours, yellows, browns, reds even green, and a quick sighting of Mount Aconagua, nearly 7,000 metres!!, snow capped, proudly standing out as the highest peak outside the Himalyas (across the border I meet a couple of German guys who are going to climb it) then into some serious going up bits, one section has 27 hairpin switchbacks in an almost vertical rise, mind boggling dimensions to the scene, the brain can’t comprehend this enormous vista of the mountains and valleys, then the near-vertical walls of bitumen at each turn, dodging giant trucks labouring under brakes, overloaded and hanging on by the skin of ... read more

So after our week long default trip to Chile we boarded a bus to Mendoza, Argentina. Now we've enjoyed some spectacular scenery en route from A to B, and you may well have heard enough of our love affair with the Andes, but the road to the border between Chile (Santiago) and Argentina (Mendoza) is something else. Once again in awe of just how gigantic and dramatic nature can be, our faces were stuck to the window and our jaws hung low. Our road ascended and as the mountains became angrier, we gave up trying to comprehend and quantify their dimensions. Some serious colour therapy was to be had as the natural shades of orange, red, yellow and brown provided us with a warm and earthy glow. We even managed to catch a brief glimpse of ... read more

So after the not so great city of cordoba we have travelled to mendoza, home of argentina´s wine industry. arriving first thing in the morning in the middle of argentina´s tourist season, hotels can be a bit hard to come by, however upon arriving we utilized a full fledged tourist information booth including the service to book hotels. the onus was off me. yeah. so we finnaly got a 3 star hotel that had twin bed´s, but on our arrival, pushed them together and made a double just for Debbie and myself. what can i say about the service sometimes. another casual observation about argentine service, is that no one in particular is in a hurry. at the internet cafe, of a cafe ordering coffee to a restaraunt and bar, you´ll get your service, eventually. good ... read more

The 5th of january I landed in Santiago the Chili. I took a direct bus to Mendoza, where I runned around to find all the climbing gear that I needed to get up Aconcagua. ....A trip with a company was to expensive, so after I talked with some guides and other mountaineers, I decided that I could go there without a guide as well. In my hostel in Mendoza I met up with two Hungarians (Robert and Yury). Robert had been on the mountain before and so we started a 3 mens expedition. The 7th we took the bus to the starting point at Puenta del Inca where we stayed for the night at 2700 meters. There we had to arrange mules service to the base camp for all our food (for approx. 16 days) Each ... read more

From Santiago we decided to make a side trip to Mendoza, Argentina to escape the high prices of Chile. Our budget has suffered a lot during our stay in Chile so a week in a cheaper place was more than welcome. We took a bus from Santiago to Mendoza, which was quite a pleasant experience except for the crossing of the border. The bus was as nice as a bus can be and they even offered some snacks and drinks. Crossing the Andes was quite an experience, the road climbs to over 3000 meters and then crosses a tunnel to the Argentina side. The views are amazing. The border formalities were the only unpleasant thing about this trip. There were atleast 10 buses before us so we had to wait in the bus for two hours ... read more

G´day from Mendoza!! After a night camping by a lake in St Luis (a swim in the evening, a swim in the morning ), we drove on to the lovely Mendoza region, well known for its wine - we are off to visit the bodegas today - and also for the nearby Andes cordillera and the highest peak outside the Himalayas, Aconcagua at 6962m. The first night we went out for steaks (huge!) with a group of Norwegians and Alaskans who had just climbed the peak. Apparently it is a very accessible mountain, the north route not technical, just the altitude which knocks a few out of the race! Guess where is next on my agenda! )) So yesterday we went on a 7am-7pm tour, passing some absolutely stunning scenery, from the flat dry planes to ... read more

So what have I done? Another year over and a new one just begun. I spent my christmas and new year's eve in that small dusty beach town called La Paloma in Uruguay. It was so low-key and relaxing. It was perfect. A sweet antidote to the usual drunken, debauched, foul-mouthed, thumping-music and untenable hungover times of years gone by. And so here we are... 2006. Buenos Aires: I travelled here, by super-fast ferry, from Colonia in Uruguay with Patrick the old Irish-American guy from La Paloma. I cannot say for a second that I particularly liked Buenos Aires; staying in the centre meant staying in the centre of the incredible din whipped up by the voluminous traffic, the hordes and hordes of flashy Porteños going about their daily business, the dirty streets and plazas and ... read more

Wed. 4th. Jan. Twiddling our thumbs at the terminal for 2 hours means that our arrival in Salta is delayed until 5:00 p.m. Lovely hotel again, with cold swimming pool, nice square and lovely architecture -what more could we want. Thurs.5th. Following tourist office advice, we catch the local bus to San Lorenzo and drive past really, really expensive houses, everyone with a large swimming pool - and even one with horses grazing on the lawn. Nothing much here, a bit like Swallow Falls, Betws-y-Coed, so we head back to our hotel to laze by the pool. We have it all to ourselves until it's in the shade and then the sensible people come out, so off we go to the cable cars. This is more like it - breath-taking views of the city, surrounded by ... read more

Getting to Mendoza involved a 16 hour overnight trip back from Igazu to Buenos Aires an 8 hour wait then a 14 hour (overnight again) journey to Mendoza. Luckily Kath & Kate were also doing the same trip and we arrange to meet at the BA bus terminal, which is actually more like a chaotic airport than bus station. So 3 Brits with 6 hours to kill, what to do? see some of the sights I should have seen over xmas, maybe relax and enjoy cosmopolitan Buenos Aires....No No No we get a taxi to the nearest bar in San Telmo and spend the day drinking Sangria! Even though we´ve had all day to get back to the bus station still only manage it with minutes to spare. After another overnight bus journey with Bingo & ... read more
