Cordobese Amigos After our overnight bus to Cordoba, which was not Royal Suite, and not as comfortable as our ride to Mendoza, we arrived first thing in the morning to Cordoba. Our initial plans were to stay as long as possible in Mendoza before heading back to Buenos Aires for our flight to the Northern Hemisphere. Instead, we returned to Cordoba to see our new friends, Jenny and Lucas. In total, our Argentine adventure included Buenos Aires to Cordoba to Mendoza and eventually back to Mendoza to Cordoba to Buenos Aires. We certainly were not original in our itinerary, but thought we would use the opportunity to spend some more time with all of our new South American friends. Thankfully Lucas does not drink and Jenny does not drink much, so what we knew we ... read more

Hola Amigos! This blog is a little late (I stayed in Córdoba last week!), so I apologise for that, but the sentiment is there! So, from Puerto Iguazú, which I believe is where we left off...I took a bus to Córdoba. I left at 13.15 and arrive in Córdoba at midday. That is one long bus journey! But I got a flat bed, champagne, sweets, films, and a massive fleecey pillow, so it was actually pretty good. The thing with travelling on your own is that you always meet people in the most unexpected places sometimes. Only sometimes, normally you meet them in a hostel bar if I´m being honest! But I met a Canadian girl in the queue for a taxi, and she had no hostel booked so decided to come to the one I ... read more

So I made the decision.... to head for Cordoba, much helped by the fact that two of the girls I´d met on the wine tour were going, so hopped on the overnight bus with them and 10 hours later we arrived. This was one of the fabled "cama" buses; big leather seats, blankets, pillows, movies and stewardess service... not so bad, although it could have been a little cooler. Still, for 25 quid...! The city seemed pretty quiet (but then again it was 7am) and then we found out that there had been a big party last night as today was a bank holiday, so once again when I tried to visit a museum it was closed - not even third time lucky. There´s all sorts to do here from rock climbing to parachute jumps, but ... read more

Cordoba Monday 5th October - Wednesday 11th November Days 29-66 During our time in Cordoba it´s been difficult trying to juggle the experience of living/working here as well as being a tourist! We live with a young couple called Jean and Ines who are both lovely. Ines is 26 and works for Projects Abroad and Jean is 27 and is training to be a chef. Jean is orginally from Brazil and is a bit of a surfer dude! They have a dog called "Fiedi" who they found as a puppy on the street. First things you have to get used to here apart from the weather/language is the time you eat! Dinner is served anytime between 9.30-11pm on weeknights and even later at weekends. At first we felt really sluggish going to bed with a full ... read more

Food - an Argentinean Obsession When we left Buenos Aires, we boarded a double decker bus headed to Cordoba, towards the west of the country. We were expecting a ten hour bus ride and purposefully chose a day bus versus a night bus so that we could see the countryside. Well, imagine a ten hour bus ride through Texas. Or Kansas. Or Oklahoma. Same Same. It was flat, dry, with straight roads, some horses and cows. For over ten hours. We were fairly exhausted when we arrived, but were excited to be in a smaller city, even though Cordoba is the second largest city in Argentina, with a population of around 1.5 million. We made a reservation at Le Grand Hostel, not too far from the train station, and in the neighborhood of Nueva Cordoba. ... read more

I took the overnight bus from Mendoza to Cordoba (9 hours). However, bus travel in Argentina is excellent. I went first class with what the call a "cama suite". It was a single seat that folds down flat into a bed. Cordoba has many Jesuit churches, a good university, and cultural sights. It is the 2nd largest city in Argentina.... read more

So, a long drive back to BA and i arrived back at 5am, so 21 hours awake so far, and i had to jump straight onto a 12 hour bus to Cordoba. Decent journey, but no sleep, so 6pm in Cordoba and pretty tired. Still, no rest, i was meeting the tour group at a Ranch in the middle of nowhere. Another bus for 1 hour to a place called Rio Ceballos, which is a tiny town in the middle of nowhere. Now, the ranch is a really secretive, and there is only one way to get there using a local old couple who know where it is..... So i arrive in Rio Ceballos at 7pm, about 36 hours awake, and an old couple pull up in a 4wd and shout "Eddie". I get in, and ... read more

Well it turns out that going Cama suite on the bus really is the only way to go. We could only get semi-cama for our 16 hour bus ride from Salta to Cordoba and we didn´t sleep a wink. Our plan was to arrive this morning, drop off our bags and wander about the city until 10 p.m. when we catch another(!) 10 hr overnight bus to Mendoza. Did I mention that we figure we have the swine flu as well???! Not a pleasant trip when you can´t breathe in addition to everything else. We arrived this morning in the pouring rain. Not a great start after we´d been up all night but the rain cleared up pretty quickly only to be replaced by a freezing cold wind. We stowed our bags and headed for the ... read more

Cordoba is a seriously cool little town. Like so many of these Argentine towns it looks very run down and 3rd world as you come in through the high density council housing and half finished public works projects that look like the money ran out about 8 years ago (which of course is exactly what happened) But then you get into the city centre and there are these fantastic cobble stone streets with towering 18th century cathedrals and opera houses which have been converted into museums and art gallerys. Interspersed into all this is the university which uses the centre of town as its campus. Its kind of hard to describe but imagine if the classic old buildings of say university of queensland were positioned in and around the cobble stone streets, pubs and shops of ... read more

Tim Version: * Checked out Cordoba over a couple of days on foot and its a real mixture of a place, both good and bad! The slightly mystified version... the town, its quite a mixture and not as I thought it would be: I'd been told it was a University town which generally appeals to me. Unfortunately I was arriving at a very quiet time of year so I knew it wouldn't be as lively and have that real University town feeling to it. Arriving, the bus terminal is pretty large so gave me good hope of the town being lively. Wandering through the streets to my hostel however I barely saw another soul! All the shops were closed and the centre square was closed for reconstruction. It was a Sunday so I expected little to ... read more
