Day 78 Wednesday 28th December Both felt wrecked in the morning and it took a big effort to get moving. The breakfast in the King David hotel wasn’t too bad, compared to Argentinian standards. As you have probably already guessed, breakfast isn’t a big deal over here so you can’t expect much. Hadn’t planned much for today other than just checking out the town and first on the agenda was trying to find a laundry. We wandered around the immediate area for nearly an hour before we spotted a laundry, which was going to be a cheaper option than getting the hotel to do it. We then went for a long walk around town trying to get a handle on the layout and what was on offer. The Lonely Planet claims that Cordoba is ... read more

Day 73 –Friday 23rd December Today is going to be an easy day with the main task food shopping for Christmas, the first supermarket was the first one recommended by the hotel. It was a small dingy market with hardly anything in it, the second one was mentioned in the LP and it was much better so we picked up supplies. Nearby to the supermarket was a “central market”, which was where all the locals go to get there produce. There were lots of butchers, delicatessens and a couple of fruit and veg sellers. The deli’s looked fantastic with the glass counters over flowing with cheeses and meats but we just couldn’t face trying to do a pantomime of what we wanted, quantity and price. There was also a huge Christmas eve crowd frantically ... read more

A short stint in Chile´s Atacama Desert was all we had time for before heading across the Andes into Argentina. We have dubbed Argentina the Land of the Mullet. Every guy here, young or old seems to have a mullet - did they get stuck in another era? But to rewind a little. Our time in San Pedro was good. We downgraded to a camp site after one night in a hostel due to the high prices. We enjoyed a hike through the Valley of Death, accompanied by two dogs (once again), where we watched some sandboarders and enjoyed the sunset atop a ridge. We also decided (against the advice of tour operators) that we would cycle through the driest desert in the world to see the sights, rather than go with an expensive organised tour. ... read more

We wachtten geduldig. ... read more

Our trip to Córdoba began with a bang. We got cheap tickets for an overnight bus and went to the bus-station way before it was time. We waited for our bus to be called but it never happened, so when it was time for the departure we searched the 70(!) bus platforms for our bus and couldn't find it. We eventually got onto a bus to Córdoba and we were really excited about the comfort. We didn't expect big fluffy seats, a lot of legspace and a blanket and a pillow in a third class bus. After the bus left, the conducter came up to us and wanted to see our tickets again and he realized what we up until that point missed: we booked a bus for the day before. We were lucky enough to ... read more

I arrived in Buenos Aires after an 18 hour bus ride with a bruised tailbone. I spent 3 days in the city, exploring many many parks and streets and I EVEN took the subway all by myself which I was really really proud of. The city is quite beautiful which tons of colonial architecture and sooooo many parks. And theres fruit markets and dog walkers that walk 20 dogs at a time without getting the leashes tangled!! One day I went to see the Plaza de Mayo which I really wanted to see. In 1977, Argentina was under military communist rule and anybody who said or did anything against the government would just disappear. More than 20,000 people were taken by the government and tortured and usually killed. Sometimes their bodies were returned to the families ... read more

Rob writes We got the bus to Cordoba the next morning at 9:15, which was supposed to take about 10 hours. We ended up getting into Cordoba at about 22:00, a lot later then we were expecting. I wasn’t too keen on walking through an unknown town trying to find the hostel at this hour but we made it without incident. On arrival we learnt from the hostel that the room (£23) had been double booked so rather than having a double bed we had to settle for two single beds. We didn’t come off to badly though as the hostel discounted the price for the inconvenience. Breakfast here was a bit pants unfortunately, but this seems to be common over Argentina where sweet pastries and cakes seem to be the norm in the morning. It ... read more

We arrived extremely early on the bus from Mendoza and emerged bleery eyed from the bus station and set off on a walk to the hostel which was about 20 minutes away. I managed to carry my massive bag all the way without complaining which Ben was very impressed with, I think I must be getting stronger, which can only be a good thing! As we were walking to the hostel we noticed that EVERYTHING was closed which at first we thought was quite normal as it was only 8am on a Saturday...little did we know at the time how significant this would become. We arrived at our hostel and were told the room was ok to check into now, score! Usually we get told we have to wait around for a few hours before it ... read more

Cordoba and Salta – Double Header An overnight bus took us to our next destination, Cordoba, a university city in the centre of Argentina. We stayed in Babilonia Hostel, a great place which put on BBQ pizza and choripan (sausage and bread) nights, however it was noisy – probably didn’t help arriving early doors to find a bunch of hungover chavs! We signed up for a one week Spanish and tango course, two things guaranteed to be about as far outside of our comfort zones as possible. The Spanish course as it turned out was great, and our teacher Luz was very good, although a lot more work on our Spanish is required! Tango was a challenge and we spent a good chunk of the lessons slow walking across the floor with our teacher shouting “Eso, ... read more
