I’ll make this the final blog for this trip. Tomorrow will be another at sea day, and we will be packing. We arrive in to Sydney on Thursday morning and will catch the trains home. Seeing that we had nowhere to go today, nowhere to be, we decided to order breakfast from room service, which could have been delightful. It turned out that toast for one person was one slice of toast. Luckily I also had 6 pieces of melon! Tom had a slice of toast as well, and cereal - with no spoon!! Oh well, back to the cafe for the next two days. We went to the theatre for the first lecture of the day - the author talking about the legal shows this time, evoking lots of reminiscing of favourite old shows. Tom ... read more

Today was an easier day, much more leisurely! There was land outside our deck when we awoke, and soon after we were heading into Milford Sound, somewhat earlier than expected (Captain Leadfoot, as the amusing naturalist narrator referred to the ship’s captain). We dressed into some warm gear and went upstairs to the cafe for breakfast. It was very busy with everyone wanting to see the views of Milford Sound. It was very very cold out on deck, which is where we were whilst enjoying our brekky and mimosas. After that we took ourselves to the sky lounge where I made us a coffee each and got the bartender to put a shot of Jamison’s in it (that was allowed in our package) to make it an Irish coffee - that warmed us up! We enjoyed ... read more

Last night we had really calm seas and we slept soooo soundly - gosh it was good! But this morning we had a 9am lecture to get to and brekky had to be quick so we went of the the Oceanview Cafe, right down the back of the ship, the buffet, and wow, was it busy!! But it still makes for a time efficient breakfast. We were even still able to have our mimosas - starting a new habit here! 😂 Our first lecture at 9am was a very engaging fellow named Milos - he talked about volcanoes, glaciers and tectonic plates our grandson Thomas would have loved this talk. We were amazed to hear that anyone believing in tectonic plates and their movement back in the 1960s was thought to be crazy. It wasn’t a ... read more

Well, what a great day we had today! With Edwin’s assistance we were able to solve some issues - he brought in a tool to fasten the divider on our balcony. It was opening during the heavy seas last night and crashing against the deck furniture (until Tom jammed all the furniture against it), and we didn’t want our neighbours wandering around on our deck! He also removed the heavy doona and left us with three sheets on our bed, so much cooler. The last problem he helped solve was the safe, which had been locked in the open position - a special little man with a special little machine had to come along and fix it, so we can stop carrying around our wallets, passports, jewellery and all of our currency, and put them in ... read more

I Sunday, 23 and the seas are calming and the skies blue. My back is improved but still concerning. It will either be healed by the time I get home or....... Yesterday, in that time before getting out of bed, I spotted our little stowaway. I had heard about it at dinner a couple of nights ago. It appears the fluffy little wren or sparrow flew on board in England and then was unable to fly home. That morning it was riding on my deck chair. Wish I had something to feed it but the best I could do was put out half an orange. Two days later it was still untouched. Imagining it making a new home in the USA. A note about the rock band playing in the Rolling Stone Rock Room. They are ... read more

We are now on the high seas. Our two ports in Europe, La Harve in France and Plymouth in England started out rainy but cleared up as the days went on. I had planed to explore Devon and experience Devon High Tea but it was a tender port, the seas were rough and my back is aching. So I bailed. Last night I enjoyed a lovely veal chop and capped the evening off listening to the rock group. I so wanted to get up and dance but sanity prevailed. One brave woman got on the dance floor solo and the lead guitarist joined here for a bit. The seas began to get rougher by bedtime. During the night we were rocking and rolling and today there is rain, thunder and high swells. I am thankful for ... read more

I’m writing this final blog from the airplane home somewhere over the Atlantic. I wanted to take the time on this very long flight to reflect on our latest adventure before the reality of normalcy sets in and it all becomes a happy blur. A few statistics about our adventure. Total miles driven in the car: approximately 2200 Total kilometers walked: 185.4 19 breakfasts with eggs; 12 breakfasts with baked beans Number of castles / palaces visited: 14 Roundabouts navigated: approximately 247 Number of sheep viewed: approximately 2 million We’ve been asked by various cabbies and people we’ve met towards the end of our adventure what we enjoyed the most. As Don has said, that’s a very difficult question to answer as we saw so many different things it’s impossible to really compare. How I’ve decided ... read more

1. - Introduction - Southampton I suspect like many other travellers, 2022 is a year where travel plans cancelled by the pandemic finally come to fruition and this trip to Iceland and Greenland was no exception. This was to be our fourth visit to Iceland (the first being on honeymoon some 40 years ago!), but our first to Greenland and therefore a place on our bucket list to be ticked off. In mid-August, we travelled over to Southampton with a couple of days spare before embarking Island Princess for our voyage north. As most of Europe was experiencing an unusually hot summer, we aimed to keep our outdoor activities in Southampton to a minimum. Our first stop was at the Tudor House, an old merchant house originally built on the dockside but now a fair distance ... read more

I’m excited, finally getting to visit the world’s largest island with the least densely populated region on earth. Hard to believe only approximately 56,000 warm bodies live on a hunk of rock 3 times the size of Texas! The majority of its residents are Inuit, whose ancestors migrated from Alaska through northern Canada, gradually settling across the island by the 13thcentury. Most reside along the southwest coast, the area I’ll be exploring. A Little Bit of History: According to Icelandic Sagas Erik the Red, who had been banished from Iceland allegedly for manslaughter, settled what is now Greenland in 982. Upon returning to Iceland around 985, he praised the merits of this newly discovered land and by 986, he had organized an expedition which resulted in the development of present-day Nuuk and Qarqortoq. Greenland became Danish ... read more

Morning found Carnival Legend at sea. The Sargasso Sea to be exact. That stretch between North America and Bermuda. We played United States Trivia, which we did well at, but did not win. Enjoying our cabin balcony, we watched clumps of sargassum float by, flying fish take to the air and ships pass on the horizon. The evening was Formal Night, or Cruise Elegant as it is now known. Susan and I first took in the evening show, Motor City, and that was enjoyable with its Motown music retrospective. Dinner was Roast Beef. Surprise dining room entertainment appear nightly, with a singing waiter and the entire service staff sometimes oining in. Cruise lines today take two leisurely sea days to reach Bermuda. (In the era of ocean travel, Furness Bermuda Lines ships were intent on getting ... read more
