To whom it may concern. Just wanted to share some pictures that we took when we visited your Caves last week in Jamaica. We are from Barrie Ontario Canada... It was one of our high lights visiting the Green Grotto Caves. What a great thing to do when you need a break from Jamaica's hot sunshine. I use to live in Jamaica back in the 60's. We lived in Port Royal, Morgan's Harbour. I wanted to take my kids to the house that I grew up in but we didn't have enough time. If we come back to Jamaica I will for sure come and visit your caves again... We are telling everyone we know about your special place. My youngest daughter Mackenzie is thinking of doing a school project on your caves. Take care and ... read more

Sunday Jan. 16th, 2011 The Edge of the World The plane took off from Raleigh-Durham airport on one of those cold clear mornings where the visibility is unlimited. Once we reached our cruising altitude of 37,000 feet the view was unbelievable. From my vantage point in a window seat on the port side of the cabin I could see over a hundred miles, all the way to the outer banks as we headed south toward Wilmington. There were no clouds on the horizon and then as I looked out across the great expanse of the Atlantic Ocean I saw it for the first time, the actual edge of the world. I have seen a clear horizon many times while at sea, but the effect is completely different at sea level than what I saw now at ... read more

It’s been five weeks since I got home from Fiji and other than the weekend in Memphis, they’ve all been spent at home (well, around Southern Ontario – which is home!). It’s been so great to be home because there have been some exciting things happening . . . starting with – Alexis and Kevin got married!! And it was a surprise wedding!! I was “in” on the surprise. They actually told me in early August, when I was still at camp. Because otherwise I wouldn’t have been in the country! I’d planned to go to Fiji and New Zealand but I couldn’t miss my sister’s wedding so plans changed. They were married on 10/10/10 – one week after I got back from Fiji. I spent that week staying at their house playing wedding assistant running ... read more

We woke up early Monday morning and made the decision to go. It was time to cast off the lines and set sail across the Gulf of Mexico. The preparations were done and the crew had arrived and everyone was anxious to get underway. So Jen packed up Kona and her stuff in the rental car and hit the road, driving across the country with the help from her dad, who was flying into Miami later that day. And the Rum Runner set sail for its final leg of the journey home, to a small coastal community in the Bay Area of Houston known as Kemah, Texas. Overall the trip was good, although hot... very very hot. The first day or two we were able to do some sailing, which was great. The highlight of the ... read more

I had not had a *real* vacation since April 2009, and I was going crazy for warm weather. Jason knew how badly I wanted to get away and gave me one of the best Christmas presents a girl could ask for - a CRUISE! I'm apologizing now for the lack of detail in this post as I'm actually writing this September 2010, I'm hoping the abundance of pictures will fill in the gaps! The weather didn't cooperate much and it was by far the rainiest cruise I have been on (my 6th total!) but who can complain when they are on vacation?!? We took Carnival's Fantasy ship on a 4 day cruise with a single stop in Cozumel. It was super windy and many of the excursions were canceled. Luckily we didn't have one booked at ... read more

Over my years working on ships, one holiday that I’d yet to experience was Halloween. My contracts have always worked out that I have either been at home or traveling on my own. Looking at photos from other crew members, it always looked so fun with everyone all dressed up. So when this contract was sorted out and I knew I’d be on a ship for Halloween, I started looking for my costume! I seemed way ahead of things, trying to find a costume in September, but I knew that the weeks leading up to Halloween would be chaos with me jumping ships and dry dock and everything else. I’m so glad I found them (yes, I got two!) before I left home because I wouldn’t have been able to get one down here with everything ... read more

Wonderful day at sea. This was the most relaxing day of the trip. We slept in, had breakfast, I sat out on a lawn chair reading. It was so windy out though and my cutsie cowboy hat that I bought for $1 kept blowing away! poop. We used the hot tub and pool for a bit. of course, thoughts of "this is life" entertained my mind. And I ate. Ate ate ate. Food is available on the ship every second of the day, pretty much. Pizza, hot dogs, and hamburgers for lunch. I had my fair share of a billion cups of ice cream. And I remember we played basketball on the back of the ship. I was fortunate enough to see a nice sunset as we sat on the back of the ship looking out ... read more

It has been a busy cruise. A new director came on this week, so I’ve been training her. She’s great though and I’m actually excited to leave and let her do her thing now. And while I am very much looking forward to heading to the Triumph and seeing people there, I’m leaving great people behind here. One of the best parts of doing multiple contracts are meeting up with friends you know from previous ships. I’ve been able to spend some great time here with my friend Jason, who I know from the Destiny. It’s also been so good to see Moira and Dana again. The Camp Carnival team here is super, such sweet girls. I’ll miss them. Though it’s only been a few weeks that I’ve known them, I’ve spent a lot of time ... read more

Well, it 's just a couple of weeks until the start of my vacation with my daughter, Carrie. Nothing as serious or historical as previous international trips posted on travelblog, but hopefully fun and relaxing. We are headed out on NCL's Norwegian Spirit from New Orleans with stops in Mexico, Guatemala and Belize. All countries where I would like to spend a full week exploring jungles, archaeology, and culture. Oh well. At least I get a full day at each port! And warm weather! We have shore trips planned that include beautiful hike to waterfalls, seeing Mayan ruins, and a river trip. And a beach day, of course. The ship itself was just refurbished in November, so should be nice and clean and fun. I joined Cruise Critic, a cruise community online, and will meet up ... read more

In an effort to catch up I’m combining Monday’s Cozumel port day, and part of Tuesday’s Belize port day. Cozumel is one of the ports my beautiful bride and I have looked forward to on this cruise. Back a few months ago we booked an excursion call “mini jeep and snorkel tour”. Our excursion was scheduled to start at noon so we woke and showered about 8 AM and went to the Red Sail restaurant and had a nice breakfast buffet. At 11:00 AM we walked off the ship and down the dock to find the place where our guides would be waiting. After we checked in we still had about 30 minutes before the tour started so we walked around port and bought some sun screen. Purta Maya, one of the main ports in Cozumel, ... read more
