Geo: 18.4428, -64.75034.5 nautical miles after leaving Tortola, we were anchored in White Bay, Jost Van Dyke. Home of the famous Soggy Dollar, and Ivan's. You country music fans will appreciate the fact that Kenny Chesney filmed No Shirt, No Shoes, No Problem in and around Ivan's. A bar where it is common for patrons to mix their own drinks and leave payment in the cash box. This practice, however, seems to be losing some ground. This is where we get to spend Day 5 in paradise. At roughly 3 square miles, Jost Van Dyke (The J is pronounced as a Y) is the smallest of the four main BVI. JVD lies to the northwest of Tortola and to the north of St. John. Like many of it's neighbors, JVD is volcanic in it''s origin and is ... read more

OK. I admit it. I love to fly. Not the trek to the airport, or the security lines, not hoping to find a free space in the overhead or that my seat mate might be Samoan.....but when I look out of the window at the clouds or the lights below, it is still magic to me. Here I am at 35,000 feet traveling to another adventure. I do miss the pillows and the blankets, I do miss having room to stretch out but I will be in FL in 2:49 hours. I have my own seat and no one is asking "are we there yet". I hear it's 81 degrees and I think of a pool and green shrubs and I'm a happy camper. In two days I'll be boarding the M/S Zuiderdam where I expect ... read more

Geo: 21.8906, 95.9983The river was too shallow to sail all the way in to Mandalay so we disembarked and got on a coach 30 minutes out. Mandalay was almost completely flattened by Japanese bombing in WWII and it has been largely rebuilt.First we visited a 1,200m long, 160 year old teak pedestrian bridge, built from timber salvaged from an imperial palace. This was when the capital was relocated from Amarapura to Mandalay. Then a visit to a 1,200 monk monastery and followed with a look and shop at a silk weaving factory.Checked in to our less-than-excellent Mandalay Hill Resort hotel, on the north side of Mandalay at the foot of Mandalay Hill.Another monastery in the afternoon then a visit to Kuthodaw Pagoda and its identical white stupas. They were built in the mid-19th century by the ... read more

Geo: 18.3333, -64.6167Today, our adventure takes us to Norman Island, and then to the west bank of Tortolla. The sail form Virgin Gorda Sound to Norman Island took across 22.5 nautical miles of open sea.Norman Island is uninhabited and privately owned. The island is about 600 acres, and about 2.5 miles long and is reportedly one of the locations of Robert Louis Stevenson's classic tale of YARRRRRR "Treasure Island." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Norman_Island The morning .... routine for lack of a better term .... is becoming pretty consistent. Wake up, head topside for some fantastic views, talk with everyone about how freaking awesome this is, grab some breakfast, have our 10 am briefing, and then head out for the day. We've all pretty much gotten past the "I'm horrible with names," "good to meet you" phase. "So where ar ... read more

Geo: 21.4678, 95.2926Yandabo's population of 800 are mainly engaged in pottery making and agriculture. Clays and silt from the river bank are mixed to form the basic product. Each potter makes 60-80 pots per day, depending on their size and whether they are cooking pots or water pots. Every few months several families get together and build a communal kiln where about 4,000 pots are fired. They lose nearly 20% in the firing process and the rest are sold locally for 1-2,000 kyat each, or taken to regional markets by barge and sold for double that.In the afternoon we had a recap on Myanmar geography, history, culture, etc in the lounge. The Farewell Cocktail Party starts at 6:30pm and we settle our ship's bill this evening.Tomorrow after breakfast we disembark and have a look around Mandalay ... read more

Geo: 18.5026, -64.3681After a fairly rough night at sea, travelling 78.6 nautical miles from Anguilla, we arrived at Virgin Gorda around 9 am. For a lot of people this was a relief. The trip last night was a choppy rockin' and rollin' one .... and not the good rockin' and rollin'Heather and I were top side for the arrival. What a spectacular experience. I really had to make a conscious effort to not talk like a pirate while we came into port ..... It was harrrrrrrrrrrrd. But here we were ... Geo: 21.1942, 94.8945This morning was a visit to the prototype stupa, built by the first king of the Bagan Dynasty who ruled from 1043-1077. The design was adjusted in the 17th C by the resurgent Myanmar Empire of those times. Then a visit to the market of Nyaung-U, a nearby town. We've seen many more tourists in this area; mainly from Europe. You can hire an electric bicycle for 3,000 kyat per day and there are lots of young folk getting around. There are restaurants, hotels and backpacker accommodation, and several signs for MasterCard and Visa. Land (all land?) is owned by the government and 30 +15 year leases are sold.A short sail this afternoon to Shwe Pyi Thar village for a visit to experience village life. We had bought pencils, books and accoutrements for the school, ... read more

Geo: 18.2167, -63.05Well this day started out ..... Interesting. Woke up to a heavily pitching boat. This ain't no cruise ship kids. It's only 360 feet. When it's rough out ... You feel it. So far though I am one of the few without the seasick patch. Rocking doesn't seem to bother me all that much. Our sail from St. Maarten to Anguilla took us 23 nautical miles last night.Anguilla (pronounced an-gwil-ah) is a British overseas territory in the Caribbean, It is one of the most northerly of the Leeward Islands in the Lesser Antilles, lying east of Peurto Rico and the Virgin Islands, and directly north of St. Maarten. It has a population of around 15,000 people. For more about Anguilla: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anguilla.Ok ... cut to boat scene in .... 3 ..... 2 ..... 1 ......Had breakfast ... read more

Geo: 18.0218, -63.0433Woke up a little fuzzy from the night before. Heather and I took a stroll along the "Boardwalk". No boards involved here. Found an awesome little beach side restaurant called the Pasanggrahan for breakfast. Heather had the French Toast and I the Denver Omelette. Typically I don't feel the need to list everything I eat on vacation .... Mainly because all I'd be doing is writing about what I eat. But this breakfast was outstanding, and the coffee here? Outstanding!Maybe it's because we are where we are. Maybe a pigeon could poop on me right now and I'd describe in great detail how awesome being shit on in the Caribbean is...... Speaking of pigeons .... There he is ..... Just kidding about the pooping little feller .... Shoo ...Watching the big cruisers roll in. ... read more

Geo: 17.9826, -66.295So, we've been here for some time. Much longer than expected. Although I'm in serious need of a long, white sand beach, the locals that we've met have made our time here incredibly enjoyable. We met Ricardo and Marjeta our first week here at the local swimming hole and have been spending time with them ever since. They are kind, generous, fun-loving people who live in absolute paradise! If I ever move ashore again, this is the kinda digs I wanna have! ;) They invited us for dinner and a bonfire. Great food, friends, and a rockin' fire. Nice job, Ricardo! Also, local bar owner, Janso and his wife Anna have been spectacular hosts within this small community. They run the "cruiser's" bar, "Sal Pa Dentro" and make sure to help out all the ... read more
