Geo: 17.9826, -66.295Reunited with Simunye in Salinas!!!!And, glad we made it to this wonderfully sheltered harbour because the wind has been blowing dogs off chains since we arrived.  It's been so windy that everyone in this harbour has stayed put for the past three weeks. Several boats tried to sail east, towards the Virgins, but have ended up coming back to Salinas. The wind is just too strong and therefore the waves are just too big to pound into. (A few boats have gone west, towards the DR and have had wonderful runs downwind.)So here we are....meeting the locals and having a blast.  (Yeah, so check out the "south beach" style birthday party we attended. Everyone is so friendly here...who woulda thought we'd end up on the guest list?) ... read more

Geo: 18.2031, -67.14From Samana, DR we picked an amazing day to get ourselves across the Mona Passage, which is known to be difficult if the conditions are less than perfect. Did I mention that we saw many whales from Samana to Puerto Rico? Pretty cool beans. After checking in at Mayaguez, we moved on to Boqueron which is a touristy, beachy, party town that is only really open on the weekends. But the beach was fun even though it was dark, course sand, which you find in most of PR. (I miss those gorgeous white sand beaches!!)Making our way further on, we stopped at Giligan's Island for one night and an important dinghy ride to Copamarina Beach resort to get online so that we could send notes and photos to Mackenzie for her 23 birthday.http://www.tripadvisor.com/Attraction_Review-g644390-d651486-Reviews-Gilligan_s_Island-Playa_de_Guanica_Puerto_Rico.htmlhttp://www.copamarin... read more

Too windy for even asemi-pleasant sail (motor) in the direction we want to go next.Although we've now been in Salinas, PR for a week, priorto that, we've really been on the move. From Providencials, Turks & Caicos, with our friend Steve on board, we made it to Samana in the Dominican Republicin 54 hours. We stayed in Samana for four fun-filled days waiting for anothergood weather window to cross the Mona Passage to reach Puerto Rico. Sunday February 15th, 2015. At Sea En Route to The Azores Following D and Roy's complaints to the Captain about the tender operations they were both were asked to write a letter each outlining their issues and concerns. D spent some considerable time on this. M didn't fancy sticking pictures from holiday brochures on a tile so she gave it a miss. D went to a lecture on the tragic relationship between poets Sylvia Plath and Ted Hughes. We had pre-dinner drinks with Roy and Patti in their cabin and then we went and had our first dinner on our new table for 8. After dinner we went to the show which was Richard Sykes with his tribute to Nat King Cole. Monday 16th February 2015. Craft was a repeat of the book making so M ... read more

Geo: 21.7837, -72.2763Feb. 12th, 2015 - A week in the Turks & CaicosHello all,We made it to Providenciales (known locally as Provo) in two legs over three days for a totoal of 180 nautical miles in 31 hours. This was my longest passage yet. We picked a really good weather window, and probably had a little less wind than Tony would have liked, but as a neophyte passage maker, I was quite happy with the dead calm seas on arrival in Provo. In my limited experience, I can say that open ocean is very different than the coastal cruising we've been doing thus far. When there are rollers out there rather than waves, it's like you are out in the middle of grassy hills that go on for miles...but they are constantly moving. Reminded me of ... read more

Thursday 5th February, 2015. At Sea En Route to Antigua After a posh breakfast M went to the Craft and Creation Session and made a birthday card. At 11 am we both went to Alan's lecture in the auditorium called "Written in the Stars". This was a talk on the night sky that we could see in the Caribbean. He made use of props such as an orange and a marble to illustrate the vast distances in our universe and those beyond. It was really good - the more so because Alan is really funny. At one point he disappeared out of one set of Auditorium doors and reappeared through another in order to illustrate night and day and the earth orbiting the sun! After lunch we went to the lounge to listen to our Cruise ... read more

Wednesday 4th February, 2015. At Sea En Route to Antigua We had a posh breakfast and then D went to the Port Talks on Barbados and Grenada. M headed for the Photography Workshop Part 1 with Alan O'Cain. D learned nothing in the port talks but M learned 5 tips for taking good photos. These were as follows: - Rule of Thirds - Framing - Close Up - Changing the Angle of View - Lead Eye into Picture Attached to this blog are some of her efforts. Although it should be noted that subject material is somewhat limited on the ship! After lunch M went to the Craft and Creation session and completed her butterfly made out of butterflies. D stayed in the cabin and continued with his Jeffrey Deaver novel. We met Patty and Roy ... read more

Oceans and Seas » Atlantic February 3rd 2015

Tuesday 3rd February, 2015. At Sea En Route to Antigua After another posh breakfast we went to the lecture on Rafting the Colorado which was delivered by Billie. It was quite interesting but all of these talks are a little self indulgent - a bit like looking at someone else's holiday snaps. We read our books for the rest of the morning and after lunch M went to the Craft and Creation session where she started on her butterfly made out of butterflies. This entailed punching out loads of butterfly shapes and then gluing them in a larger butterfly pattern. Very time consuming. She didn't finish it so will continue on the next session. D went to lecture on "One Day I Might Sail Around the World" which was delivered by a fellow passenger called Christopher ... read more
