Hiya folks, I arrived in Auckland around lunchtime and not feeling too tired despite only having an hours sleep between Dubai and Auckland. The journey was in three parts Dubai --- Singapore --- Brisbane --- Auckland. The first two flights were about 7hrs or so. Quite a cool part of the flight was getting to stay on the plane in Singapore while the plane was refueled and passangers got on and off. The cleaners came onboard and gave the plane a not so thorough going over. Quite a serious point was put across the flight intercom as we arrived in Singapore, we were reminded that drug smugglers could be punished using the death penalty, that gave me quite a shiver even although I would never dream of doing that, but you do hear stories of 'innocent' ... read more

My first log! Monday 5th July and there are 34 days to go before we (my partner and I and our two children) embark on this journey to the other side of this small planet. It used to be a much bigger planet by the way when I was a child. Australia was so far away then that you actually had to book a telephone call with those people who owned the telephone system. I suppose someone had to pay for the long winding cable which stretched from these shores all the way around the globe. Nowadays, the other side of the globe is 'just over there', its seconds away, the time it takes a web cam to re-scan and transmit. Who moved Australia? Thats what I want to know. Someone did. Once, Earth was so huge ... read more

A little late I know - but we've been very busy & the internet is so busy in most places we've been. Well - here we are in Airlie Beach something like 800km down the coast from Cairns. This is the jumping off point to get onto the Whitsunday Islands, a group of supposedly gorgeous islands that were pushed through the ocean by the movement of the continental plates. They include Whitehaven beach - the 5th most beautiful beach in the world apparently! In about two hours Kate and I jump on a racing yacht and spend a couple of days(and nights) sailing around them. This will be something to look forward to, especially after having had a few days of poor weather, the clouds have finally parted and we're enjoying full on aussie sunshine. Airlie is quite tropical, pretty ... read more

2nd July 04 Another week, another dollar. After work today, rob and I left for Melbourne. Some strange poeple on the train. I got boredd so I got tipsy. Had a great plan to strip but naked and run around the train to liven things up. I realised it was a bad idea when I stopped laughing to myself and everyone was looking at me. Did a cross word thing with rob. Got of the train at 19.40. We met Sonja around 9. She picked us up in the car. She looed so beautiful and stunning that I couldn't think of any words to say. So instead, I just said Hiya. NICE ONE!!!! Mind you, she didn't have to dress up, she looked just as beautiful wearing a tracksuit!!!! The night was fantastic. We went to ... read more

Sunday, 28 June I started my week by spending six hours behind the wheel driving to Adelong in NSW. We are in the middle of winter and the weather was typical of this time of year. On my journeys up the Hume Freeway I usually take my first break at a town called Holebrook, about half an hour east of Albury. It was around three in the afternoon when I arrived outside the Bed and Breakfast establishment in the main street of Adelong. The room was very basic but comfortable. After taking in my overnight bag I decided there was favourable weather for a trip to the Adelong Falls. Beside the creek are ruins of an old gold mining company. History tells us, it was one of the first areas in NSW to find gold in ... read more

We got here! Arrived very early in the morning into Cairns international airport today. Got in around 5.30 after the 3650 mile journey from Tokyo which in turn was 6220 miles from London. Kate found suspicion with the quarantine people after the cutest dog in the world put its little paw on her luggage. Clearly she had some kind of illicit fruit!! Seemingly the little dog was in for a bit of a kicking after it turned out she had nothing on her at all (though later we did discover an empty KitKat wrapper so maybe it was on to something!) and we walked out into a very dark Friday morning in Cairns. In due time, we arrived at the Calypso Inn, to be our home for the next few days. In their own words they ... read more

Sunday, 19 June My job for the next week was in the central NSW town of Temora. I waited until 9 am before starting what turned out to be a five hundred and forty kilometre journey. It took about three hours before I crossed into New South Wales, near the towns of Albury and Wodonga. I left the Hume Freeway twenty five kilometres out of Albury and joined the Olympic Highway and drove north towards the town of Culcairn. The weather was overcast but it only rained a few times as the road took me through the towns of Henty and The Rock. Near Wagga the road by passes the township and I was on the last eighty kilometres into Temora. I had pre booked my accommodation at the Goldtera Motor Inn. I know the proprietor ... read more
