Hey everyone..I know it;s been awhile since i wrote on my blog but i guess i just wasn't that inspired... So yeah i've been in Adelaide for 5 days now. It's (again) a very different city from the other ones....Pretty big in distances to walk yet not very populated (1 million only). However, Adelaide is THE festival city....2 running at this moment and another one starting this weekend....Promoting art, music and performances....It's great! Apart from that, Adelaide has a few nice beaches (the water is not that clean though) but we enjoyed it a few days ago. Oh, by the way, this is a note for all of you who might once need Phil to put sunscreen on your back: DON'T ASK HIM to do it :p He didn't really feel like doing it sohe put ... read more

So James finished in A+E on 18 Feb and was picked up by Anne who has basically had a 6 week holiday already. We drove up to Mount Rupehu 2774m - the highest mountain in North Island and camped in a DOC site. The following day was perfectly clear so we decided to climb the mountain - after some hard scrambling and some interesting snow crossing with long run outs we climbed onto the top into perfect sun - the mountain is actually a volcano and we had brilliant views down into the crater lake. Following this we drove up to Auckland to pick Annes parents up - they came armed with masses of suitcases which with some luggage juggling we were able to squash into the car. We creeked and groaned our way to Thames ... read more

After a serious hat trick of Kitesurfing days in Esperence, the sky opens. Wakening in my tent to hear the rain beating on all my kite kit and wetsuits was very dull. A hurried pack down and general soaking of everything else we own has us reaching for the lonely planet and looking for Backpackers. With that Betty takes us once more west; we drive the 400ks to Albany, and straight to a very cool backpackers in the town center. Albany is a really quaint town; Jim described it as Cornwall in the 50’s, its quiet but with a pop of around 20’000. Our times there was marred by English weather, namely Drizzle! We spent our first night enjoying a chance to have some nightlife. We hit the pool halls and hustled our way through ... read more

Up nice and early to be picked up at 8.30am. All on the bus and started to head off, but we had to turn back for a guy who hadn't appeared for whatever reason. This was Ben. So after a false start we set off again. We went over the Noosa river of a cable ferry. (My kind of boat trip, only 5 mins. max!). Now on the North shore we carried on towards Rainbow beach. We drove along 40mile beach, this was good and different to drive and see the waves next to you. At this point we had very much noticed the air con was not working properly. So when we eventually got to Rainbow beach via the Great Sandy National Park the driver took the bus off to be fixed leaving us stranded ... read more

Ok..... so we've made our way through Taupo. Had an amazing time. After famill ourselves with the area we went and watched Amy and Asha (new and old friends) do their first skydive!! And all reports were that it was amazing! Didnt tempt us this time though as we're saving that for when my big bro gets here (pauls - that is!!). After a couple of crazy nights out at the Holy Cow (much to Natalie's delight) - dancing on tables and the like. We, somehow, managed to convince ourselves that a bungy jump - the least favoured thing to do by all of us - was the best idea. So off we went... to throw ourselves off a cliff, into water, upsidedown, 50m below, stupidly! I think Natalie will agree with me when i say ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Queensland » Townsville March 8th 2006

Another early start this morning so that we could break out of the northern territory and enter Queensland, which we managed to do in just under 11 hours after having driven 900km from Mount Isa to Townsville on Queenslands east coast, where we stayed at the Adventurers Resort, a huge hostel with undercover parking, huge kitchen, friendly staff and over 300 beds available. Mike... read more

Arrived at Sunrise Lodge backpackers in the late afternoon and booked a whale watch tour for a 7.15am start. Ouch! The trip was almost cancelled due to high winds, but they got us out luckily, and it was great. We saw 3 enormous Sperm Whales - the boat got really close. We watched them logging (doing a convincing impression of a log floating on the water), spouting water into the air and finally diving back down with a magnificant tail flip. Was really unreal to think we were so close to such vast and fabulous creatures. Despite all the whaling that has taken place (more the end of the last century up to 1950s in NZ) they are remarkably trusting of the boats coming along side them - esp since they could flick us out of ... read more

Early again for the real trip to Fraser Island. I has the same briefing, with the same guy, Monty who talked waaaaaaaay too fast. No one understood him especially at 7am. We got put into groups, 2 annoying Canadian girls, Kayla and Hayley, both very bossy, 2 annoying Dutch girls, loud and immature, and 2 blokes Jo (Irish) and Drew (Canadian). We spent most of the day getting told how to load the car, put up tents and how to drive, that sorta thing. We left the depo with our 4 wheel drive, both the lads could drive it, we went the wrong way but still managed to get to the ferry on time, and not last either! The ferry took 40mins, once we got there we let the tyres down and went the wrong way ... read more

So we crossed the Cook Straits to the South Island with Paula and Jane, and headed straight for the Nelson area at the top of the island. From there we had day sea kayaking, pulling into little bays every so often to snorkel. The guy who took us out collected a load of sea urchin type things, which he and Paula set about - splitting open and eating the dubious looking yellow coloured roe. Anything that has that much pink goo come out of it shouldn't be eaten in my view... Anyway, it reinforced our desire to kayak, and P&J provided numerous entertaining incidents (particularly Paula nearly throwing herself out of the kayak after a spider climbed on her head in a cave)! From there we said farewell and Scott and I headed for the Abel ... read more
