Rocked up to Wellington feeling a little sore from the rafting and spent a very chilled day wandering round: Oriental Parade and the marina with tons of running people (doing it in their lunch hour, presumably; looked like far too much hard work if you ask me); and the afternoon in the Te Papa (maori for "our place") musuem. The musuem was brilliant. Learnt all about emigration to New Zealand: apparently the Cotswolds and surrounds were from where a lot of emigrating farm labourers originated. I watched a documentary with a woman from Ashton-Under-Wychwood talking about her relatives who decided to seek a better life in NZ in the 19th century. And there is a memorial in Woodstock (I think) that lists the several families that perished in a stormy sea when their boat to NZ ... read more

Another early breakfast, and another great two morning dives this time on a site called "Pixie Pinnacle". Then after lunch we dove "Sharky's Nipple" - not the official name for that dive site, but one acquired apparantly after the boats hostess Sharky dived into the water with a top which quickly lifted itself up. Well thats the story anyway... The dives were all fantastic, but as the day carried on we were diving in increasingly rought conditions. Visibility was not great, but the amount of aquatic flora and fauna more than compensated for this. The swim back from Sharky's nipple was a bit of a mission to say the least. Torrential rain and large waves made seeing the boat almost impossible, and Kim, Lizette and I were forced to keep our regulators in our mouths for ... read more

Day 2 of the safari was a bit of a rude awakening, as it started to rain!! The rain wasn’t heavy, but it wasn’t comfortable when you’re sleeping outside in a swag. Nevertheless, it was the best alarm clock considering we needed to be up by 07:40!! After a quick breakfast and a clean up around the camp we headed for ”The Rock”. The morning started with a leisurely 9 Km walk around the base. This allowed us to take photos, where permitted. Unfortunately, no beautiful pictures of sunrise were possible due to heavy cloud cover. Once again the flies were out in force, this made for some uncomfortable moments as I had left my fly net in the bus!!!! The option of climbing the rock was not available, as it had rained. This will have ... read more

Hello, After the whitsundays tour we made our way up to Mission Beach which was where we took part in the white water rafting. We were picked up around 7.30 in the morning and driven to the main base where we grabbed some breakfast and got our briefing. Within about half an hour we were on a coach being driven through the mountains to the top of the course. The sites were once again amazing and we were told that the course we were rafting through was actually surrounded by the oldest, untouched rainforest in world! The coach journey was long but when we arrived we spared no time in getting our life jackets on and getting in the water. There were seven of us and we all managed to get in the same raft together ... read more

Waking up in the nice hostel in Greymouth we had a good breakfast and started making a plan for the day. Not a usual day, it was Ira's birthday. In the morning we biked to the harbour mole to watch the dolphins in the surf. Later we left Greymouth for the scenic drive across Arthurs Pass. Here we got our first impression of the Souther Alps and did a quite special cave trip. A few kilometers after Arthurs Pass a car park and a sign-board were the only hint that some activity could be done here. The road had been winding along a small stream for some time and here this stream went underground. On the sign-board it said that one can take a flashlight (or better two for savety reasons) and hike up from the ... read more

We booked a tour to The Great Barrier Reef from Cairns and got a complimentary day on a 'coral cay' called Green Island. We actually stopped off at Green Island on the way out to the reef on the first day. It was probably one of the worst days to do the trip as the sea was very choppy and lots of the other tourists on the boat were throwing up (lovely!). It was also choppy at Green Island so we decided not to snorkel as the visibility wasn't very good. However as we were on the beach the lifeguard set off his siren and orders everyone out the water. Jason ran over to be nosey and saw a young crocodile was swimming to the beach. This apparently has never happened before at the island and ... read more

After a very un-settled nights sleep.... by sun rise Vix had enough of being crammed in the back seat and grabbed her sleeping bag to get a few more hours down on the beach and watched the sun rise. I stayed in the car. Made a few stop off's at various towns along the way and made a lot more progress to yesterday. Decided that evening to pay the $ and get our-selves in a hostel at Batemans Bay as all feeling so drained. So got a great nights sleep before making the last leg of the journey up to Sydney the next day....running ahead of schedule (a day early) as so eager to get there and loose them!!!!!!. ... read more
