01.04.06 So here we are in a new location, great! We have arrived at Airlie beach, the place where so many people leave for their massive tourist attack of the Whitsunday islands, but not us!! we are fed up of hearing about them. After getting settled in we went out to check the town out and the local Saturday market. We put our underwater camers in to be put onto cd, so we were looking forward to that. After lunch we walked along the sea front, you can't swim in the sea here because of the stingers. The town is nice, there is quite a lot of shops, a nice harbour and a lovely lagoon that you can swim in to cool off from this tropical heat. After the quietness of Agnes Water it looks like ... read more

Monday April 3rd Lo all from OZ! Today we got off to an early start, with us getting out of the RV Park around 7:45 am, in order to get to the koala sanctuary by it’s opening at 8:30. This allows us a few hours there, before we catch a high speed ferry to Tangalooma Island to see the wild dolphins. Let me tell ya rush hour traffic in Brisbane is busy, especially when you’re driving a bus! We got to the koala park right at 8:30, and for about 30 minutes we had the place to ourselves, which was really nice! We went off and did the koala photo’s right away, as we couldn’t resist. We got a small male koala, maybe 15 lbs or so. These guys look small and light, but they sure ... read more

Oceania » Fiji » Yasawa Islands April 3rd 2006

Our last Island that we had the chance to visit, was the famous Bounty Island. There have been a few TV Shows that have been filmed here. It was such a relaxed but also very busy party Island. There was singing and dancing, the biggest buffet meal so far and also desert and there was also a swimming pool and a pool table. What a great time. to our dissapointment we were only here for that night, but it was a great night, that was for sure. They had great cocktails and not to meantion CHEAP too. We headed to our rooms and to our surprise we had AIR CONDITIONING .... Yip that is right, the best thing you could have in your room in Fiji, we also had a fridge with ice cold water too. ... read more

Day 56 - Thursday 30th March The Facts: Flight to Bora Bora Shark and ray feeding Grey sharks diving The longer version: An early start took us back to Papeete Airport where we had an Air Tahiti flight to Bora Bora via one of the smaller islands. The views were spectacular with all islands having some beautiful green multi- coloured lagoons around them. Bora Bora itself was just as spectacular as it is in all the brochures, although some cloud covered the highest peak. Straight to the Hotel Maitai Polynesia, where after several reminders, we were picked up for our activity of Ray and Shark Feeding. This is generally pretty harmless except for when your guide wears outfits such as ours did as the photos demonstrate. We spent time in the water with the reef ... read more

Oceania » New Zealand » South Island » Nelson Region » Nelson April 3rd 2006

Nelson was the biggest town we had been to in some time but it soon turned out to be like all the other places in New Zealand - completely full of nothing much. This isn't a bad thing it’s just that big towns aren’t very big. We checked into our hostel, Paradiso, and then went for a walk round town. We spend that night in the hostel playing pool and talking to the other people staying there. The following morning we headed towards the Abel Tasman National Park. We left Nelson in a hurry to get to Abel Tasman for the good weather. We would return to Nelson for the weekend. ... read more

G'day all Arrived in Melbourne and set up camp at a Crystal Brooks Park, a very shaded and quiet park on the outskirts of the city. Next day was spent in the city centre, riding on a beautifully decorated Pakistani style decorated by Pakistani Bus decorators, to celebratethe Commonwealth Games. With the hypnotic Pakistani music playing we could almost imagine we were in Pakistan, even the conductor kept swaying to the music!!! We did the tourist bit wandering around Melbourne, and spent some time watching the very eventful start to the Australian Grand Prix on a large screen in Federation Square. Lots of people watching the race and the atmosphere was great. We visit another China Town and have a Chinese meal (cheap of course) before heading back to camp. Monday morning up bright and early ... read more

The rain had cleared up overnight & after breakfast we headed up the coast to Karamea. On route another weka decided to jump out in front of the car, but with hard braking we managed to avoid it. Past Karamea we started walking the Heaphy Track along the coast through palm trees & tree ferns until Scotts Beach where the waves tumbled onto the deserted white sand. Deciding it would be a good spot for lunch we sat down & three other groups of serious trampers then turned up. Determined to show Randi a bellbird on the way back we came across a likely suspect but it was chirping in a most unbell like way. We later identified it as a female bellbird giving a distress call probably as we we standing underneath it & some ... read more

Oceania » New Zealand » South Island » Glenorchy April 3rd 2006

I mostly bypassed Queenstown. The schtick on Queenstown is that people either love it or hate it, as near as I can tell. It has the vibe and feel of Jackson Hole and is about the size. I headed on up to Glenorchy. Glenorchy is an even smaller town at the head of Lake Wakatipu and the base of Humboldt Mountains. It is also the place where a lot of the tourist activies from Queenstown head and is the starting point for all kinds of treks. But since I wasn't trekking, I decided to go horseback riding. I went on the Lord of the Rings Tour. And once again, it was an amazing time. We road for about 2 hours and this was the first time in the half dozen or so times that I have ... read more

Well, I got on the bus this morning down to the ferry port. Got on the ferry to Townsville and as the ferry pulled away Gary texted me sayin he'd just missed me...watched me get on the ferry! :-( Arrived in Cairns to be greeted by Sara and taken out for a nigth out! Went to the woolshed...2for1 drinks! was great then on to Rhino bar where the 'Dukes of Hazard'were on...now the posters show an unmistakably male naked chest so imagine my disappointment when two girls in little denim shorts and checked shirts came on the stage waving bright pink straw stetsons and dancing. we got rapidly bored and me and Sara grumbled about how we could do that if we were paid enough. Probably shouldnt hav said anyhtin as the next part of the ... read more
