Hi all, welcome back. After our last entry we still had a couple days to spend in Christchurch, checking out some of the highlights and finally a little bit of the nightlife! As you can see from the pictures we went to the botanical gardens, the museum and a general stroll around town. The english/scottish heritage of the city is evident and only becomes more so as you head to Dunedin. We went out that night in search of an improv comedy show, but when we were dining at The Dux de Lux we met a nice couple from the U.S.A and ended up having a interesting visit with them. We even managed to get a little dancing in and my wallet and I didn't part ways, so all in all a pretty good night. When ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Queensland » Toowoomba April 2nd 2006

When I arrived in Toowoomba on Thursday the 29th somehow I had it in my head that I had until Tuesday, which for some reason I thought was the second, until I left for Singapore where I am now (Monday) but more about that later. I only got the chance to have a fleeting visit with the family again but luckily I got to see everyone, go to a Rodeo, play a round of golf (well 9 holes anyway) and organise what I was going to do about getting to Indonesia despite the little mishap at the end. I saw the Rodeo at the Toowoomba town fair that we all (Me, Carol, John, Nick and Tom) went down to one afternoon and evening. The fair is huge and people from all over the place have brought ... read more

Drove from Paihia (2 hours) to Ahipara where we stayed at Endless Summer Lodge. Named after a definitive surf movie filmed in 1966 called The Endless Summer. A really great hostel - better than most hotels we've stayed in for a fraction of the price. After a day of walking along the endless beaches and relaxing, took a tour to Cape Reinga - where the Tasman Sea and Pacific Ocean meet. The day included a speedy 4-wheel drive along 90 mile beach and sand surfing down enormous sand dunes!! Great fun!! The next day we met up with a hungover Phil, who'd gone out again despite insisting he was going to have a quiet night and recharge. We all went to Manly for the day, a suburb that has the harbour on one side and the beach and sea on the other. We caught the ferry from Circular Quay, and enjoyed the crossing, with its stunning views of the enormous harbour, with coastlines that looked like something from the Med - all rocky sides, crashing waves, and wooded areas. The harbour was teeming with life, a playground for the city goers who like to take out their boats on a weekend, as well as light aircraft in the sky swooping low above us, and tons of ferries. Manly was a lovely, with a long sweeping beach, and ... read more

This is a picture Ailsa and I took while sitting on King's Beach at Caloundra at dawn. We were on our annual pilgrimage to the coast to celebrate the birthdays of various members of our families and for some reason we were up at the crack of dawn and decided to photograph the event.... read more

Oceania » New Zealand » South Island » West Coast » Greymouth April 2nd 2006

By now it had really started to rain and we began to realise just how much of an outdoor place New Zealand really is. Throw a bit of bad weather in and you become lost as to what to do. We stopped briefly in Hokitika for a coffee and a trip to yet another massive beach that was covered in driftwood before heading on up to Greymouth. The plan had originally been to go down Arthur’s Pass. This was the road heading inland between Hokitika and Greymouth. It is meant to be really scenic and have lovely views of the mountains. Unfortunately by this time the mist and rain had completely blocked out the mountains so it would have been a waste of time taking that road. Instead we arrived in rainy Greymouth and found ourselves ... read more

Oceania » New Zealand » South Island » West Coast » Punakiaki April 2nd 2006

It had been raining in the night & looked like it wouldn't let up for the rest of the day - it was like the Greymouth we remembered. We left Global Village Backpackers with a new passenger, Randi who was travelling in the same direction & wanted to stay at The Old Slaughterhouse having had a similar recommendation to us. After stocking up on grub at the supermarket we headed north along the west coast. Punakaki was our first stop & luckily the rain had cleared leaving bright sunshine over the rugged coastline. The Pancake Rocks are funnily enough rock formations that look like stacks of pancakes that are continually eroded by the rough Tasman Sea. In between the pancakes are several blowholes which given the right conditions (a high tide & south westerly swell) spurt ... read more

We arrived in Sydney on Monday, after a long 12 hr bus ride from Melbourne-we are in the Base Hostel on Kent St which is now way as ncie as the one in Melbourne- it feels a bit industrial here! We have so far been to Palm Beach( Home & Away)- unfortunately we didn't get to see any filming, Bondi Beach - Unfortunately it was cold and started to rain, so we didn't last long there. We have hiked up the Blue Mountains (I am still recovering). Walked across the Harbour Bridge and have seen the Opera House at Sunset, We also went to the Sydney Tower last night which revolves ( 360) and had a cocktail up there, afterwards we went out for Kangeroo- but Kay found a Cockroach in her dish-so we abandoned the ... read more

From Fraser Island we went to Airlie beech where we stayed in a shared accomodation with a Canadian mother and daughter and lots of crickets and geccos! Cleverly Dan put masking tape round all the door to our room so the bugs couldnt sneak in through the gaps, this was good until i realised almost as soon as hed finished that i needed the bathroom and there was only one way out!! oops.(Dan was not happy!) While in Airlie beech we went on a trip to the Whitsunday Islands and went snorkling on the Great Barrier Reef. Snorkling was amazing and hopefully the pictures will come out cause we used a underwater camera so fingers crossed. Dan got loads of snaps of the reef, tropical fish and us in our wetsuits and flippers, i couldnt take ... read more
