Geo: -45.8746, 170.503Crossing the southern tip of the South Island was all about dodging sheep (there are a reported 20 sheep for every person on the South Island- very believable as the little fur balls are everywhere), but the cows are omnipresent as are the deer farms (apparently the deer are captured via helicopter in the massive Fjordland National Park and moved to venison farms outside the boundaries- they are not native to NZ and are destroying the sensitive local flora). We rolled into Dunedin with just enough time to get Big Blue comfortable for the night and race down to the local stadium for our first taste of top flight New Zealand Rugby. Rugby is a religious state of mind in New Zealand in much the same way that the sport of hockey is in ... read more

It's a long old drive from Te Anau to Owaka, in the Catlins region, that takes in the whole of the Southern Scenic Route, via Invercargill and Riverton, along the south coast of the South Island. And it's meant to be very pretty indeed. However, let me tell you that on a day with limited visibility, scattered showers and low cloud, there's little to nothing 'scenic' about this drive. And I'm not being bah humbug about it - I can tell you that when I stopped to look at the ocean, I couldn't work out where the sea stopped and the white/grey sky started. And that was the bit that touched the ocean. The rest of the journey was entirely through fields - field after field of green and yellow grass. Sheep, the odd alpaca and ... read more

Thursday - just so Iknow! Getting my hotel room numbers mixed up - it's either the wine or the number of hotels or dementia - tick the appropriate box. Interesting day................bit of a mix up with our trip booking: Monarch thought we were doing a morning trip and we thought it was a full day one. All worked out in our favor as we we got a free Larnach Castle visit - wouldn't have chosen to go on it but we really enjoyed it. Even had a piper there (Glen) to welcome the visitors (off the cruise ships) - he was pretty good given that he is about 5 generations removed from being Scottish! The guide was excellent, giving us all the scandal about the Larnach family. Then the trip we expected to go on started: ... read more

Geo: -45.0311, 168.663It's no secret that New Zealand is the adventure capital of the world, but Queenstown is the adventure city of New Zealand with views to fall back on. It's a place that is active all year round and doesn't disappoint.I have been here quite a few times but this was the first time for Anna and the minute we stepped off the bus and looked out the view from our accommodation, she had fallen in love with it too. This time we weren't able to benefit from the use of my parents car, so we boarded the Naked bus to Queenstown for an all day ride via Lake Tekapo and Lake Pukaki, this time with marginally better views of Mount Cook than last time. We stopped briefly at Lake Wanaka, on a glorious warm day ... read more

After exploring the little town of Oamaru with it's picturesque whitestone architecture, random op shops and delicious carrot cake we got on our bikes and cycled the windy coastal road meeting the Flying Kiwi bus at our beachside bush camp. The bike ride was awesome - part of it along an unused road impassable by vehicles due to the coastal erosion. Waves crashed to our left and sheep bleated from the endless farmland to our right. Using the cycle route maps provided by Flying Kiwi - within a couple of hours we reached camp. We pitched our tent with a view across the bay and part of the group went off on a tour to see the yellow eyed penguins. After chopping a few veggies and having a natter with fellow cook group helpers we headed ... read more

Bei guter Musik w ... read more

-10°, kein Witz)  Gasflasche tauschen  Heizung wieder an.
