Our first trip as a family... As much as I was looking forward to it, all sorts of doubts and worries were flying through my head as well... Wouldn’t it be too much for Millie? Would she actually enjoy any of it? Would she cope with the travelling well? After all she was only 4 months old... We have been doing little trips with her around Brisbane for quite a few weeks already and she always seemed to have ‘enjoyed’ it – I guess smiles and little mousy sounds might pass as signs of enjoyment. ;) In the end if we were to go ahead with the plans for a bigger trip and going to Poland later on that year, a trip to New Zealand seemed like a perfect opportunity to test the ‘new way of ... read more

After a hectic Xmas and New Year staying with 2 sets of family and friends houses, it was time to head back to hostel life and discover more of New Zealand but more importantly I wanted to relax. Leaving Alexandra I really didn’t have a plan of where I was going to but thought a couple of days back in Queenstown by the lake would be ideal. So out came the thumb and I was hitch hiking there.I was lucky enough to be picked up by 2 german guys who had been in New Zealand for about 4 months and were on their way back to Queenstown with a boat that they had just purchased. They had the rest of the summer all worked out of driving on the lake with beers and friends with the ... read more

Monday 9/2/15 Te Anau to Dunedin Left Te Anau heading for Dunedin but with a small detour to visit Rachel in Tapanui. Last saw Rachel in Perth WA in 1993 so we had a fair bit to catch up on. Luckily a lot had been done on Facebook already. Was great to meet up again and see some of the family, Jamie was working away but Dylan was home for lunch and we picked the two little ones, Harrison and Oliver, when they finished school and nursery. Rachel gave us lunch and took us for a drive round Tapanui. Looks pretty idyllic with family close by and schools, shops and a river for swimming in the summer. We left just after 3 when the boys had been picked up and headed to Dunedin. Hope it's not ... read more

Geo: -45.8746, 170.503Was very excited to get to Dunedin which is in Otago Region of the Southern Island, which I first became aware of when travelling to Wellington years ago for work and was exposed to the Otago Highlanders in the elite rugby league.Dunedin is the 2nd largest city in NZ in terms of land mass next to Auckland and is the 7th largest city in terms of population (approximately 120,000), but is recognized as one of 4 main cities for historic, cultural and geographic reasons (plus Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch) - 2 islands their main north and south cities. The maori name is Otepoti - the place beyond which one cannot go, where waka (canoes) had to be put ashore.Dunedin is the modified gaelic word for Edinburgh. Dùn Èideann. Geo: -45.0311, 168.663It all turned out to be more difficult and painful than I had hoped. Eventually, I found a nice place to drop to one knee and ask the question. After laughing at me in shock for 30 seconds, she eventually said yes. Our cabin at Milford was so picturesque, comfortable and beautiful I opted to keep the window above our bed open for sunrise to greet us. When light shone in around 5am, I opened the stream side curtains to enjoy the view and sound of the stream while I snoozed. It looked overcast, but dry. When I woke again proper around 7.30 it had started to rain. Thick cloud and mist had rolled in, hardly ideal for a helicopter ride. Looks like more trouble for my engagement plans. The initial objective was to propose ... read more

Stayed overnight at a beautiful lodge high in the hills above Alexandra. Girls are now getting into the routine of studying whenever they can; so far we've done Maths, Psychology, English, RE, Geography and Physics! Set off towards Arrowtown first stop was Lake Dunstan and the Clyde hydro electric power station and dam which was quite a sight. Next stop was Kawarau Gorge and a ride on the Goldfields Jet Boat! Were delighted to have our own jet boat for the four of us while seventeen Chinese were crammed on to the adjacent one! Absolutely fantastic 45 minutes of adrenaline with loads of 360 degree spins! Stuart was in his element while Abby won the screaming contest. Stuart now wants to be a jet boat driver when he grows up! Watched some bungee jumping nearby, Abby ... read more

Geo: -45.0311, 168.663We left the dissapointment of Franz Josef behind us to embark on a most spectacular drive south towards Queenstown. It was one of the prettiest drives I can remember, again maximized by picture perfect weather. Blue skies and sunshine. A half hour south of Franz Josef we stopped for a photo at its neighbour the Fox Glacier. From there it wasnt too far on down the west coast to the township of Haast. Not alot here, a few homes, and a few resteraunts/cafes. From here the road beyond leaves the coast and heads into the mountains. Its usually closed daily from 4-6pm on, and often completely in winter. Time, season and weather was on our side and the way was open. The scenery changed from coast, valleys and streams to a narrow windy mountain road, ... read more

Left Timaru this morning and continued our drive south towards Oamaru. Turned off to Waimate to make an impromptu stop at the wallaby park. We were greeted by a very eccentric lady who was hilarious! She showed us how to feed the wallabies and then let us wander around the pens to see and feed them. Some were more brave than others and some even held your hand to make sure you didn't take the food away! At the end she told us to:"go sit down and shut your eyeballs!" Then she brought us out a tiny little baby wallaby to cuddle; Freya's face was a picture and she wanted one desperately! Abby thought it was very cute and cuddled it a lot!! When we were finished she just rolled up the sack and went and ... read more

Geo: -45.0311, 168.663 I woke up early so I did not have to queue for shower, my room in Haka lodge was nice with free wifi but my room was on top of the kitchen /lounge with the kitchen open all hours so the noise of people cooking and the smells even at 3 am, kept me awake. The bathroom was very nice but being next to Lounge/ kitchen, it was occupied most of the time and I had to use one on the other section, the staff at the reception were friendly and helpful. Queenstown in the Southern Island of the country is very touristy on the banks of Lake Wakatipu, nestled with snow-capped mountains of the Southern Alps and the rolling farmland with sheep, deer and dairy farms.... read more

Geo: -45.8746, 170.503We left Te Anau early - 7.30am- to get to Invergargill for breakfast. It was an easy drive with almost no traffic this far south, passing farms and tiny villages and hillsides lit up by the sun in the early morning, which soon faded as we approached a rather dreary Invergargill- so like Scotland. The next stage of the drive took us through the Catlins- rugged coastal scenery with wonderful sandy beaches, but not the weather to attract a long stop over. Fortunately we found some petrol at the Information- Site to get us to Dunedin. We had one great ambition in Dunedin, to visit the Royal Albatross Centre to see Albatross with their chicks and to see them flying. There were 5 nesting Albatross clearly visible from the viewing centre and when they ... read more
