Sunday, March 14th Doug and Karen are passionate outdoorsmen. They have five kayaks, eleven bicycles and an insatiable appetite for adventure and the outdoors. After a delicious fruit, muesli and yogurt breakfast Doug and Talita packed a cooler full of snacks and water, we loaded two ocean kayaks on Doug's truck, then set off for Cable Bay, a half hour's drive to the north. Because Karen was working night-shift she was sleeping and unfortunately couldn't join us. At the bay we got the double kayak. It was our first time using a rudder while paddling and we were amazed at how easily a kayak turns when it has a rudder. We'd also forgotten how easy it is to paddle with double paddles (lately we've only used the single paddles in our canoe) and we flew through ... read more

I really do have some irrational fears...I'm happy to pack in my job in a recession to travel by myself around New Zealand and Australia, yet I'm terrified of, amongst other things, giant squid. Which live very, very deep at the bottom of the ocean. Anyway, at the National Museum of New Zealand, Te Papa in Wellington, last week I found myself at one of their temporary exhibitions: Colossal Squid. Which featured a dead giant squid on display. That I was fine with, but the exhibit also featured a 5 minute CGI film about the squid and its life. Which I had to walk out of, basically due to terror. An ANIMATED film. Too scary for me. Shocking, and yet I'll jump out of a plane. Like I said last time, my initial impressions of Wellington ... read more

Thursday, March 11th Happy birthday Stefan! We hope you have a special day and an amazing year now that you are back in SA. God bless you old friend! After breakfast we walked down to the beach to see what the breeze was doing. We were hoping for a calm morning so that we could take Birdsy for a paddle out in the bay. We were not disappointed. The sun was blazing and there was almost no breeze. We drove to the boat ramp where we unloaded Birdsy and carried her down to the bay. She was truly in her element here, cruising along with just a few soft strokes with the paddles. This was much more fun than paddling like mad people to reach some destination. The water here is so clear that we could ... read more

Luckily, the tsunami turned out to be little more than a high tide. We were a little worried as we watched the news report in a house sitting 4 meters above sea level. I am also lucky to have left Chile a month ago as I see images of places that I've been now destroyed. I actually felt an earthquake when I was camping a few weeks ago in Te Anau. Half asleep, I first thought that people had hold of my mattress pad and were rocking back and forth. Quite a nice experience in the forest without the danger falling buildings. Along the way up the coast from Wanaka I met up with Vanessa again to do the 3-day Copland Track which follows a river up to the base of Mt Cook and rewards hikers ... read more

Functional days, opera and not getting much done From the depths of spidervill in the Pelorus sounds, we drove out in the stormy weather heading to our next stop of Nelson. Apparently of the total inhabitants of New Zealand 45000 of them live here, it is some kind of cultural and arty Mecca. The drive there was again much longer than we were expecting, and I couldn’t help with any of the driving as my foot was now elephant size (not sure if it was due to the original bites or whether Mr crushed spider bit me with his final dying breath??). we passed through the town of Havlock which was a little bit yokel if you know what I mean (brothers and sisters holding hands!!), so we didn’t stay longer than filling up the van ... read more

Day 3: 9-2-10 The eventful portion of the day was spent traveling to and in and around the Farewell Spit. Geographically, a spit is a narrow strip of land that juts out into the sea -I did not know that until recently- and is really cool. Getting there though, was a bit of a challenge. We drove up the most curvy road any of us had ever seen, which was only two lanes, wound around the side of a mountain, while next to us was a cliff leading to a most certain death, driving of the left side of the road, with the driver on the right side of the car. I hope this is enough said about my strees level. This particular spit is especially interesting because it is the most northern point of the ... read more

It was a very early morning as we had to on the bus by 7:05. We got more sleep than expected with the crazy party that went on last night, but I was still quite tired. The interislander ferry left Wellington at 8:15am and was three hour journey to the South Island town of Picton. I slept most of the way on a bench seat in the bar area as did most of the other Kiwi passengers. Once we arrived in Picton we loaded onto the Big Green Kiwi bus and were headed to Nelson, our end destination of the day. We stopped for lunch around 1:30pm which Pete and I were both starving by then. I had my very 1st pie to eat as they are served most places in NZ. We would call it ... read more

We’re back from our last trip to the south island. It’s bittersweet; sweet because we absolutely love the the south island, with its small population (less than 25% live down here!), breathtaking vistas, and can't-put-your-finger-on-what-it-is magical feel. It’s almost like a country of its own. But it’s also bitter, because we won’t be going back again for a very long time, if ever. Anyway, we spent our week well. We wanted to get an early start on our first day, so we took a night flight to Christchurch so we could get going right away the next morning. The trip up to Kaikoura was pretty, with lots of driving right along the ocean, through narrow tunnels and so forth. We had lunch in town and then went whale watching. The whales in Kaikoura change throughout the ... read more

Our accommodation for three nights in Nelson City was at the very cute and very functional Shortbread Cottage backpackers. The owner Jimmy, kindly left us to it and we had the whole place to ourselves. The Curach family of four had now joined us so we spent the evening catching up with them and settling in. What a great place! Perfect for our needs. Five bedrooms, three bathrooms, laundry and a fully equipped kitchen all set in a historic house. We spent our days in Nelson soaking up the atmosphere, reminiscing about the good ole days (makes us feel old!), visiting old friends and checking out the old haunts. Steve was quite nostalgic and I think we'll be back again in the near future to spend more time here. On one of the days we went ... read more

Rolling into Nelson following the directions from our website to our lodging we make our way to a one lane road going up a hill so steep it requires a series of switchbacks to climb it. Pulling up to what appears to be the main house we meet Sue, our host at Harris Hill Cottages. She points us to our cottage and we are simply blown away. The cottage sits upon the hill looking over the sea out front, the city off to the left and mountains along the back. The views are breathtaking. The cottage itself is perfect - two walls are windows, great big porch off the front that can be closed in, kitchen, living area, bedroom area and bathroom with laundry. The hills are lush and green, the waters blue green…like a postcard. ... read more
