Day 3: 9-2-10

The eventful portion of the day was spent traveling to and in and around the Farewell Spit. Geographically, a spit is a narrow strip of land that juts out into the sea -I did not know that until recently- and is really cool. Getting there though, was a bit of a challenge. We drove up the most curvy road any of us had ever seen, which was only two lanes, wound around the side of a mountain, while next to us was a cliff leading to a most certain death, driving of the left side of the road, with the driver on the right side of the car. I hope this is enough said about my strees level.

This particular spit is especially interesting because it is the most northern point of the southern island and is completely covered in sand. The walk out to the sandy beaches was long but well worth every step because of the view. There were sand dunes on the spit and when we were caught in between them, all water was completely out of sight rendering us to to believe that we were more likely in the Sahara than New
paradise...paradise...paradise...

not quite a walled garden but i think it's fair to say meanings change over the years.
Zealand. The four of us briefly parted ways spreading out along the beach and we were the only people for as far as the eye could see. The sense of relaxation and calmness I experienced was unparalleled to anything I had felt before.

The later part of the day was spent viewing homes in Nelson and driving our way to Westport, where we stayed the night.

Camper-van lesson #3: sand is an honest friend...it lets you know when your out of shape.
