I do apologise in advance for this blog. I spent hald an hour writing it and then the sodding computer DELETED IT! So it will be a bit shorter! Left Kaikoura bright and early after a wonderful nights sleep :-) and headed straight for Nelson, picking up a few people from Picton (ferry terminal to Wellington on N.Island).Checked intio Fern lodge, a lovely amily run pub with dorm rooms at the back :-) Got to do a free beer tasting in the evening (yes i now like beer :-) ), then we all headed out into Nelson. It was easter saturday so everything was shutting at midnight, so we went out at like 7pm but had a good laugh. Met 2 great girls sonal and cerys; we r all independent ladies so we all got on ... read more

For all those who don't realise,I've just uploaded loads of pics from the past few weeks and put them into the appropriate blogs! I sit right now in Nelson Public Library (man is it weird to be back in one of these places after so long) They have self issue here, and I haven't heard one person grumbling about it, and the computers EVEN have SD card slots, woah!) but enough about the library, what've I been up to? We left River Valley and headed towards Wellington. This was going to be a long bus journey, so Relle said we could each choose three songs on our Ipods and not have to listen to her music all the way. This was because she likes to know what the kids listen to these days. She likes to ... read more

Its hard to follow a day where you jump out of a plane, but actually the following day I did the most fantastic walk, called the Tongariro National Crossing, considered by many to be the best day walk in New Zealand. The walk passes over (live) volcanic craters and between 3 mountains, including Mount Tongariro and Mount Ngauruhoe - known as Mount Doom by Lord of the Rings geeks. Ahem, I mean fans. The forecast was a bit touch and go, with wind and a few showers predicted. We were told it would be extremely windy at the summit of the walk, and even that we might have to go on our hands and knees at some points so we wouldn't be blown off. Even with that slightly offputting warning, I think everyone was quite overwhelmed ... read more

After another beautiful but long journey I arrived at my next stop Nelson. I was told but some other travellers to check out the Abel Tasman National Park but the next bus there left at 3:30 & the last bus back was at 5:30 and as it was an hour and a half away it seemed pointless. So i asked at the reception of the hostel (Another YHA) what there was to do and found that a short walk away you could see the exact geographical centre of New Zealand and get some good views of the city as it was on a hill. After a 30 minute walk and a rather breathless hike i got to the top and saw the spectacular views of Nelson, the centre point was cooler than it sounds and i ... read more

Hi again From Arrowtown we drove over several valleys and ranges of hills to Wakata. On the way we had to stop to see the Kingston Flyer, a 1927 steam loco which had just finished a trip when we got there. Then on alongside a very long lake to Wakata where we stayed the night. Weather not great here so we did not do a great deal that evening. Dull again the following morning so we went to the Puzzle World. An amazing place, we spent over a hour there before we had to pay anything for using the puzzles set out in the coffee area. Altogether we must have spent around 4 hours looking at the displays standing on floors at crazy angles and trying to work out the visual effects created in the multiple ... read more

22nd February 2009 - THE FERRY RIDE & ON TO NELSON!!! The Ferry ride was good though we couldn't sit outside for long as the wind would have knocked us off the boat. Nat still didn't feel too good from the night before in wellington and so we found a seat in front of the big screen ready for a movie and didn’t move much. I found my way to the café to buy a brew and by the time I came back Nat was asleep. I joined her and we both missed the whole of the first film!! When I woke up the second film was just starting…bit of a kids flick but I watched most of it anyway. Nat felt a little better when she woke up and watched a bit too!! As we ... read more

23/2/09 = Tahunanui beach & A Camera Cure Woke up nice and leisurely at 7:45 after a brilliant nights sleep. Rolled around for a while, then got up and had breakfast. Should have been going to Abel Tasman today, but already too late for that and not at all bothered; sleep was more important. Got ready without rushing and entirely enjoying feeling of being well again…hooray! Didn’t know much about Nelson, but since was such a beautiful day outside, hostel man recommended a visit to Tahunanui Beach. Good idea. Booked and sorted water taxi for trip to Abel Tasman tomorrow at 8:30am (bit of a rip off at $64)and then did 45min walk through town and towards beach. Nice town with lots of nice little shops. Managed to avoid going in shops and spending money, but ... read more

We went up to Kaikoura on MOnday to go whale watching but woke up to wind and rain and it was cancelled - so we've come up to the north of the south island Nelson- to see Sarah and andrew. - we're heading back south now and will see them again ... read more

I'm afraid this is a very boring blog entry! But after being in Nelson for 4 ays we had run out of things to do! Both Em and I are really shocked about how small all of the towns are in New Zealand and literally once you've done the activities there, there isn't much to do. However this was a very useful day as it meant we could do some washing and pack as you find when you're moving around alot any opportunity to 'unpack' or sort of- you do so there was a lot of stuff sprawled everywhere!!! In the evening me, mike, em, kate, gay mike and chris watched a film ready to leave nelson!! A good day!!... read more
