Wednesday 1st December 2010 (Wellington – Nelson) Picked up by a new driver Flee just for short the trip to the ferry terminal. A very scenic & smooth 2 hour crossing to Picton & we were met by our next driver “Kane-It”. Onward to Nelson for our overnight stay, where we had to use an overflow guest house for a double room, but it was great as they had free wi-fi & ice cream (not that we ate any – but it added to the ambience)! Feeling a bit stiff we decided to go for a run. Kane suggested a route along the river and we followed it past the golf course until we reached our turning point, but luckily a local runner was out & he saved us re-tracing our steps by showing us a ... read more

Well, ladies and gentlemen, I have made the most spontaneous trip of my life. The planning involved an hour booking a 10-passenger plane to Nelson (4 hours before takeoff), a night at the Nelson YHA and a kayaking trip at abel tasman park. That's it! No other planning involved, and it feels GREAT! I just booked an all-day horse trek for tomorrow WOOOOOO! SO excited. Baton Run horse treks borders Kahurangi National Park, so it should be a beautiful ride. Also, it's for experienced riders--none of that trail riding stuff for me. I'm staying the night at the horse trekking cabin (for a measley $25) with dinner included, then getting dropped off in the morning at the kayaking site for my day of relaxing paddling around beautiful orange sand beaches, green mountains and turquoise water. Ahhhhh....this ... read more

Saturday 23rd October: Up this morning for our free brekkie (as negotiated by Dave at the Ibis). We then went to the internet cafe to book our crossing to Picton in the South Island. While there, Han decided to pursue the money-saving option by booking tonight's accommodation in Nelson in advance. Han spotted a "mystery hotel" option where you don't know what you're getting until you have booked, but it then only costs 45 pounds a night for both of us. Why not, eh? Upon confirmation of the hotel, we were awarded the Grand Mercure Nelson - voted the best hotel in Nelson and usually costing $300 a night. Yippee. We boarded the ferry at about 2pm and the water was like a mill pond. We got a good view of Wellington and the Westpac stadium ... read more

Hello, slight break in the blog and alots been happening...... so the journey continues onto Franz Josef glacier. There was some poetic licence in the description of the 'rain forest canopy' !! but the tree hut was very nice and comfortable and the private spa was relaxing away from everyone else. The glacier was a full on days hiking - sunny in the morning turning to hailstones. Quite a few narrow gaps in the ice for Phil to squeeze through and the crampons meant i didn't end up on my arse on the slippery sections. How those guides do it everyday i'll never know. Off to Greymouth next - yes liz and pete it's a bit uninspiring there isn't it glad we jumped straight on the train. Lovely Tranz Alpine train ride lots of views and ... read more

Today we drove to Nelson, taking the scenic ocean route through Kaikoura and Blenheim. We saw loads of seals basking on the rocks south of Kaikoura. The trip was uneventful, arriving in Nelson after 6 hours and checking into the fabulous Grand Mercure Monaco, wonderful english themed apartments designed by my uncle. We ate a great meal at the Honest Lawyer across the road with Alan, Margaret, her sister Janet and their grandson Brody. The boys were kept entertained making little paper boats out of colouring-in paper. ... read more

Geo: -41.2708, 173.28411th May Blenheim & NelsonOn the road again though we would have loved to stay longer in Kaikoura. Our destination was Nelson on the north coast of South Island about 150 miles (240 km) away. For the first part of the route the road hugs the coast so was very pretty, if a little distracting for the driver. We stopped to see a seal colony on the rocks – very cute seal pups playing together.Later the road enters Marlborough wine country with acres and acres of vineyards. Fascinating for a teetotaller like me.... but Alan seemed to know the names. Pit stop in Blenhiem – yep, Blenheim/Marlborough/Nelson there was a definite military theme going here. Also a Todd's Valley. No sign of a Mount Ip, though. Half the names are very familiar- Cambridge, Canterbury, ... read more

Well, all packed up and stuffed in Louise's little car named Madge and we were off to Nelson. We had to drive through the beautiful Lewis Pass to get there. Took us about 6 hours to drive from Christchurch to Nelson. As it was good friday when we arrived there wasn't much open and the town was a ghost town. We found our hostel and found out that they made a mistake with our booking but using my amazing receptionist powers I got us into another hostel for the second night. Pictures Walked arouond town and found a restaurant open to have some dinner at as neither of us felt like cooking after the long drive. The next day we went to the big market in Nelson they have on Saturday's. Met up with Kumiko a ... read more

Arrived in Nelson at around 3 in the afternoon only to find that it was a 45 minuite walk to the hostel which with the warm day that it was wasnt the most plesent of experiences. Had a walk around the part of nelson which i was staying in, i cant remember what the suburb was called but it was near to the beach. i stopped and watched a local rugby game for around 30 mins continued my walk and then headed back to the hostel where i met paul, who was a charector to say the least. Paul was 45 and a kiwi and it was obvious he had been living in the dorm room of this hostel for quite some time, he obviously off his head on something other than the beer he was ... read more
