Nelson 22nd - 25th January 2009 For a 'big' (in NZ terms) town, Nelson is really lovely. It's full of hanging baskets with flowers and is easy to walk around in a day. We explored the town and parks and the rather awful 1960's cathedral. It was lovely to sit out in the sun at a cafe drinking coffee and watching the world go by. We stayed in a campsite about 10 minutes away in the Maitai valley. It was next to a river with a swimming hole, which was great fun. Unfortunately, we were starting to get our first taster of South Island sandflies! They are a nightmare from the time you get up, to the time you go to bed. We bought some more repellent, but the buggers always find the tiniest spot you ... read more

11TH- 12TH Feb: Maxin' relaxin in Nelson After a pretty late night we woke up late and started making plans for our couple of days, although the Abel Tasmen National Park is the smallest in NZ it is supposed to be one of the most beautiful so we booked ourselves on to a boat cruise around the whole NP as thats the best way to see it for half a day and then half a day on the beach. we wanted to camp but the weather was supposed to be bad so we didn't do it. After that we walked to the beach stopping for fish and chips on the harbour and chilled on the beach all afternoon. Because we'd been stuck in Nelson so long we didn't want to get stuck again anywhere else so ... read more

Up early to catch the ferry to the south island, it was pretty mad checking in as loads of people were heading out of Wellington. The journey took 3 hours through some really great scenery, we were too tired to look will have to do that on the way back. We got to Picton then on the bus in 30 plus heat with no air conditioning. The journey didn’t take very long we got to the hostel bought some food played some cards and went to sleep. ... read more

Hey! Arrived in Nelson after stopping at Picton to change drivers and pick up people who were coming over from the North Island to join our bus. Really glad to be changing drivers (getting rid of she-man) newbie, Cam, seems like a laugh! Drove to Nelson, checked in to Fern Tree Lodge which was really nice (except for the kitchen!) with 4 other people from our bus. Nice mixed dorm, 2 candians, Jessica and Bryan (Apple as we called him for stealing apple juice from us for his vodka on the previous night and because we didn't know his name so christened him Apple and has now stuck so everyone is calling him it!) Scott from Oz who had stayed with us in the previous dorm and Luke who was from Hull. After checking in we ... read more

Kia Ora!! At long, long last, after seventeen years filled with despair, heartbreak and longing, I have finally reached the Land of the Long White Cloud, the Land of My Father, the Land of My Father's Father, and most assuredly the Land of My Father's Father's Father. And its awesome. I still don't know how to get my pictures from my phone to the computer, so unfortunately I'll have to rely on brilliant language and wordplay to keep you guys interested for a little while longer. But as I'm writing this in the beautiful house of my cousins in Nelson, New Zealand, I'm looking out across a beautiful beach, into the Pacific Ocean, with large green mountains covered with mist in the distance, with a few choice clouds floating above. That doesn't do it justice, but ... read more

Hello friends and well-wishers, So yesterday was our first rainy day here, but we were on the ferry which took us from Wellington to Picton for 3 hours, and then we spent most of the rest of the afternoon on the bus to Nelson, so really it wasn't that bad. We haven't really done much here in Nelson because it's right by several national parks, one of which the tour is taking us to tomorrow so we decided to save our money and try to entertain ourselves cheaply. We walked along the Maitai River this morning (really more of a stream if you ask me) and then after a slight detour... no we weren't lost or anything, we made our way to the center of New Zealand. It was really steep getting up there but the ... read more

February Sunday, 1st I packed my backpack and cleaned my flat and said a sad goodbye to everyone at El Rancho. It has been a life changing experience for me. I've met some amazing people and made some new friends. Thank you all for making my time here truly memorable and for all the knowledge and experiences. You will be sorely missed! Aimee gave me a ride to the train station in Paraparaumu and I got on the train to Wellington. On the train I reflected on the road past and the road that lies ahead. With sadness and excitement I arrived in Wellington. I spent my last night with Clive, Lize and Maryke. Clive whipped up a stunning seafood pasta and we had a last couple of beers. I realized I hadn't booked my ferry ... read more

Ok, this is where I have been naughty and not written my blog for a while and we are only up to the 20th December. After the Franz Josef hike we hit the road and stayed overnight in a lay by (OPPOSITE THE RAILWAY! DOH!) in Greymouth...not much there apart from the Monteiths Brewery. Getting a shower in Greymouth the next morning proved the biggest challenge ever!! The swimming baths weren't open till the afternoon, the community centre wasn't open....so last resort pluck up the courage to ask the tourist information, where can we go to get a shower?.......yes how embaressing hi, haven't showered for a couple of days where can i scav a shower....lol. But it was fine, not the 1st time that that question had been asked, we were told that u could freedom ... read more

We did a little wine touring on our drive to Nelson across the top of the south island. Golden Bay is one of the up and coming wine regions in NZ. We hit Rimu Grove, Himmelsfeld, Neudorf, and Seifeld Estates. And by Neudorf, everything tasted like the best stuff on earth. Coincidentally I think it's also one of the more established wineries in the region. We stopped for lunch at Seifried but their ginourmous antipasta plate pretty much incapacitated us for the rest of the afternoon. We then cruized into Nelson, a cute little artsy-fart town, and checked into our hostel at Custom House. It's a great space and a fun spot for new years eve. They had a bar downstairs and it was tango nite. So for the last day of '08, Audwin went ATV ... read more
