Here I am again, This day was not a biggie. So I'll combine it with yesterday's. We drove about 250 km (150 mi) that took quite a long time. Not as attractive as I had hoped but I did get a few pictures. Today we went the the other direction. it was steep and curves. Up an down. I cannot pronounce the place we went nor can I spell it. W___________pupu Springs. No, it's not what you think! It is claimed to be the purist spring in the Southern Hemisphere. Pushing up 257,000,000 gal. In a 24 hour period. Quite remarkable. We have moved to amother house for the next 3 nights. (Long story) Very nice, I will send pictures. Is Christmas really coming? Well, merry Christmas , We will be in Wanaka, NZ over the ... read more

We are coming to the end of our second week in New Zealand and now are beginning our tour of the South Island. Leaving the North Island, we spent a day in Wellington and now know why they call it ‘windy Welly’ – wind gusting to 100 km/hr rocked our van throughout the night. The Te Papa Museum of NZ in Wellington was superb and free! Canada should take a lesson. The past two days have been the most spectacular so far. We are in Abel Tasman National Park, which is in the Marlborough-Nelson region – or northern section of the South Island. One day we took a water taxi up the coast and tramped up and down for about 10 km through amazing scenery, beaches and lagoons to a pick up point to be taxied ... read more

You know, I've taken English lessons for the last 13 years, I've learnt how to write everything from acrostics to narratives, but still feel completely unprepared for writing this blog. In fact, what the hell does Blog even mean? Pretty weird word if you ask me. I suppose there's no harm in trying, so lets just see what happens... Sixty hours to go and I'm feeling kinda at a loss. It's still too early to start packing so instead everything is just in piles on my floor. Been having a flick through a couple of Lonely Planet guides but seeing as I don't really know where I'm going they're not much use. Think I'm about half way through my goodbyes to various people and they're probably the weirdest part, it just doesn't feel like I'm going ... read more

My Italian cousin has sent a book by post on the Eastern Veneto region where we'll be staying with his family. It is in English and shows 3 routes that can be taken covering the towns north of the Venice Lagoons to the coast. The book is called "Lands of Eastern Veneto. Tourism and cultural guide" by Laura Pavan. ... read more

Up early, It is a bit overcast and chilly early in the morning. We have breakfast and go to meet the bus that is picking us up at reception to take us to the boat. We board the boat at Kaiteriteri beach. The boat is essentially a water taxi that drops and picks-up people who are walking different sections of the coastal in the Abel Tasman National Park. The boat has an extending gangplank on the front that allows them walk onto the beach to start their walks. Di and I are not walking but simply riding the boat from Kaiteriteri to Totaruni and back calling at about ha/lf a dozen beaches along the way. The trip takes about 3 hours. We sit on the top to take photos, but it is a bit windy and ... read more

Heading South … Day 7 - Rotorua to Napier This morning it was Diana’s turn for a run around Blue Lake whilst P and the children got down to some homework and some hot chocolate. Rotorua to Napier took us about three hours in the Spaceship, not including a brief stop at Wai-O-Tapu Thermal Wonderland. Very smelly wafts, fantastic coloured deposits around the rim of very hot pools and bubbly, ploppy mud … W’s strong sense of smell had him report loudly ‘Ughh … I’d rather be shopping (!) than be here!’ A short drive took us to the Lady Knox Geyser … really interesting geomorphology which was lost on W. I think that all he learned was that if you drop some soap into hot water you might get an explosive release of gases – ... read more

Day 16 Thursday 5.45 wake up call and then off to the interisland ferry terminal – well that was the idea, but we thought we would be clever and got on to the motorway expecting there to be an exit – but there wasn’t. Plenty of signs for towns north but none for the ferry! Oh well – just as well we left early. The sea was going to be “moderate” but anyone who knows Deb and ferry crossings will know that that word provides no reassurance. Anyway it was calm. The ferry crosses the open sea of the Cook Strait before weaving through many narrow passages to get to Picton. We left Wellington, rounded the corner and then got blasted by gale force winds through the strait. The wind picked up spray and it felt ... read more

On the next Day i'm driven to the Pinnacles/Pancakes Rocks in Punakaiki. Unfortunately the Wheater was very bad. That's the Reason i skipped Westport and went directly to Motueka (Abel Tasman National Park ). There i slept on a campsite near the Big Hole. That's NZ deepest Cave Hole (164m deep). The following Day i booked my Huts in the National Park and prepare my stuff for the Tramp. The Day after i took a Water Taxi, which drop me off in the Nationalpark. ... read more
