The South Island trip began as soon as we dropped our family off at the Airport on the afternoon of Dec 23. We briefly returned home for last minute checks and to load our bags into the rental van. A long drive took us to our stopover in Levin, known for being a stopover. A train runs through there too. We slept late and offended the hotel maid by being late for check out on Christmas Eve - fair enough. I had gone out to get ice for our chilly bins (ice chests). On return, my family and the bags were sitting on the sidewalk. The maid helped by carrying out the bags for our slow moving tribe. (Sarah - We had driven 7 hours the day before. Coming through the Tongariro Range just south of ... read more

This day was mostly full of driving, from Blenheim to Nelson and then on to Motueka. We arrived into Motueka to find out that the water taxis and kayak tours already had finished taking out people for the day (it was 1:30) so we stayed at a hotel with a nice garden and outdoor pool. After sunburning ourselves, we were forced to buy shorts and sandals before making dinner in our room.... read more

After packing the van and filling up with fresh water we headed for Nelson. After a lovely wander along Maitai River that snakes through the town we headed for the Cathedral one of the largest in NZ, The town was very quiet being a Sunday but had a nice feel to it. Nelson is both a busy port and the gateway to the Abel Tasmin. We headed out of town on R6 for our destination of Motueka at the southern most tip of the Abel Tasmin National Park. Abel Tasmin was a Dutch explorer who discovered Tasmania and also has Mount Tasmin after him. On route throught the Nelson winelands we stopped at a winery called Ruby Bay owned by a Scotsman from Perth. We sampled his very young wines and bought a couple of ... read more

Sadly it was time to return from the bach. We ordered a water taxi. When it arrived because of low tide we had to wade out to it holding our rucksacks above the waves as they rolled in. We headed through choppy waves back to the Kxx and our hire car which we were relieved to find still there and untouched. The day was cloudy so we decided to do some car based sightseeing and headed up north to Golden Bay. The road is unrelentingly tortuous over the mountain to Tarkata?. The weather worsened the higher we got and the mountain views were non-existent. We stopped for coffee and cake at a lovely wholemeal cafe in Tarkata and then pressed on to Collingwood which amazingly considering its small size and rusticity was once considered as ... read more

It was Charlotte's mum's birthday so another barbecue with loads of food and drink was laid on and many family and friends attended. Again we were invited and enjoyed a balmy day in the garden by the pool. They have a dog called Meg who has here leg in plaster. She is docile and friendly. Another two huge dogs were also there (a bloodhound and some other huge dog) to complete the scene. Charlotte’s Mum had prepared some lovely food. Mid afternoon Charlotte had to return to Christchurch but her Mum and Dad invited us to spend the evening with them watching TV and drinking some wine along with Joyanne's brother and his wife ... read more
