The TripInn in Westport has been a surprisingly good place so it is hard to leave the wonderful Victorian house but we head out after breakfast moving inland and then North to Motueka, a town close to the famous Abel Tasman National park. The drive is the usual collection of one lane bridges, roads with no guardrails and precarious falls into rivers or off mountains if you make a wrong turn. A few days later, when we read the newspaper, we find out we missed a fatal head on collision on the same highway by a few hours. We stopped in the town Murchison for a coffee and found out that there was a Labour day weekend fair going on (it is a long weekend here). We do the tour of the various stand and Joshua ... read more

"Almost 45m of snow every year on top of this glacier!"

We've been in New Zealand for about 2 weeks now and we are absolutely loving it! We've spent the last week or so in or around the Southern Alps, doing a lot of walking, skiing and various other outdoor activities. Yesterday we went glacier walking which was fantastic too. Hopefully I'll soon be able to get some good photos up! We arrived in Queenstown last Tuesday and immediately arranged to going skiing in Cardrona the next day. Although the skiing areas aren't great compared to the Alps (only 3 lifts) the weather and snow were great and it was brilliant for a day. The next day we had a more relaxed time, definitely well earnt, took the gondola up above the town for amazing views and went for a walk along the lake, where I managed ... read more

14th March 2008 As it was the first campsite in two days with a shower Bex & I took full advantage and were soon clean again and ready to carry on with our Journey. Mouteka is almost dead centre of the North Coast and we were aiming to drive west for the Farewell Spit. The Farewell spit is a 26km long sand spit, and is suprisingly overlooked by most tourists and is as far North West you can go on the South Island. We spent the rest of the morning in Motueka's I-Site & booked a Horse treking tour on the farewell spit for the day after, and also a kayak tour of the Abel Tasmen National Park the following day. So we had the rest of the day to get to a campsite around Farewell ... read more

Peace Tree Walk 2008 - Riwaka Source to Mountain Valley - May 10 - 18 The Peace Tree walk was probably the best week I've ever spent. So good, in fact, that I'm not leaving town! It was eight days of blissful good will and positive vibrations. At the end of every day we all felt so good, riding a huge euphoric high together from spending whole days making music and playing with kids, painting faces and planting trees. Our group was quite a large one, on our busiest day we were 24 strong from all six inhabited continents. The international flavour of the group was really special, too. At every school or place we stopped to plant trees and talk about peace we would introduce ourselves, say where we were from and a little bit ... read more

Towards the north ... Finally we are hitting the west coast! Because of the bad weather we drove a lot and we have time to spare in the North ! From Queenstown we went to Lake Hawea and lake Wanaka to spend the night but then decided to go a little back to explore a Gold Mining region. We had time to explore the hill of Bendigo, the abandoned shafts, huts and other diggings while looking on the ground to find gold.... unfortunately no luck.... Then over the nice Haast Pass, on which we had very rainy weather, we went to the Glacier's region. If we couldn't see the reflexion of the Mt Cook in the Lake Matheson (see pics) or the Fox and Franz Josef Glacier it was still a very nice drive ! After ... read more

Meant to add this link to my site earlier - it's Sarina's website for her reusable diaper business! (And there are a few photos of little Maia as a baby on there, too.) http://www.nudeyrudey.co.nz So if you're interested in cloth nappies, contact Sarina! (I'm shameless on her behalf.)... read more

What a funny name. We've been doing a lot of driving over the past few days - we're now at just about the top of the west coast of the South Island. We've clocked over 1000km so far, and today we've got the day off driving, which is nice. Funny how lazing around exhausts you. So after we left Christchurch and wee Maia we arrived in Greymouth, and then onto Fox Glacier for our glacier hike. Now, I'm not into nature. I'm really not. I'm the sort of person who can be in front of an erupting volcano and barely manage to roll down the car window for a photo, let alone spend hours clambering over slippery rocks in mosquito-infested jungles. I can never understand the logic of climbing for hours and hours to see a ... read more

Day 164 - Sunday 2 March Once again i've survived a night in the wilderness. As we did so much driving yesterday we only had a three hour drive left to reach todays destination. The rain has also finally stopped and its quite a nice day, so rather than wait until tomorrow were going to have a walk around the Abel Tasman national park and hope the weather holds. Four hours of walking later and i'm knackered, although it was quite enjoyable. I wont say too much about it as its similar to the Blue mountains or jungle trek walks i've already written about previously. After getting dinner I spent the evening playing PSP and studying more spanish before hitting the sack. ... read more

Owkay! Where was I? Ow yeah... I arrived on the South Island, after I think a three hour-journey through the beautiful Marlbourough sounds. Incredible views! I stayed in Picton for one day, did a little walk in the bay, drunk an awful Milkshake, enjoyed my first bike ride on New-zealand territory (I miss my bike!!!!). And there I decided to go to Blenheim the next day and start working in a vineyard! In blenheim, I found a nice backpakershouse, where could stay for a longer time. I decided to stay there for at least ten days. The same day I looked for my tax nr, opened a bankaccount and found a job very easily. So next day: 6.40 am (painful...), sunblock, hat, loads of water, good shoes, and my sense of humour, and of I went ... read more
