Well I'm not so sure about the 2am ferry crossing. But we did want to beat the forecasted gale warning. Arriving a little tired but safely in Picton on a very early still Thursday morning. It was time to disembark, find a room with a view, breakfast and try and grab a couple of hours sleep. We found the perfect parking spot with views down by the marina ($1 per hour or $5 per day). They have about 4 campervan spots (no you are unable to camp the night here). After a sleep, coffee and a bit of lunch we headed off to do the Tirohanga track (took us about 1hr 20 mins return from the Marina). We started at the Newgate Rd end (Loop track) as it was close to the Marina. The track climbs ... read more

Geo: -41.5116, 173.957After a roughish night for David (too much coffee and tea for this usually-decaffeinated man?) we were up and at 'em by 6:15, and out the door at 7:15, sadly bidding adieu to our new adopted cousins Everard and Antonella. We found the Ferry Terminal without difficulty, but then waited for about 2 hours to board. We were beginning to wonder. We were blessed to sight a new bird, though - a goldfinch, but completely different from the American type. Left by 10:30, with a full dramamine in David. Probably unnecessary as it wasn't all that bad.We had the honor of being the absolute last car off - don't know how that happened. We drove the coastal road west to Havelock along the Queen Charlotte road - beautiful views, up and down, up and ... read more

New Zealand is a rare beauty landscapes coutry: mountains, glaciers, crystal clear lakes and island. I started out with a splendid place like Queen Charlotte Sound: which is situated in the northern part of the South Island of New Zealand. It is really natural and abundant in flora and fauna, and it is said that if you are very lucky you can also spot killer whale. My starting point was Ship Cove, and luckily I was alone on that track and for me, since I love quitness and exploring natural places, was absolutely great. This trail was gorgeous, because it alternates stretches aong the coast and others inland. At a certain point I was walking up the trail and I spotted a so called "Kiwi Bird". It is a bird that lives on the land, because it ... read more

We farewell Blenheim today (Saturday), calling in at the Wairau Bar for a look. What a cool little spot with the river mouth and views across to Boulder Bank and White Cliffs. A couple of local fishermen were having a great time catching good sized Kahawai just inside the river mouth. Today there was a busy Spoonbill bird mooching around looking for food in the shallow waters. Further up the road is Rarangi Beach and DOC camp. The small DOC Camp borders the beach and is a great spot for the night. A short walk from camp takes you over a stone staircase and into Monkey Bay. Both Rarangi and Monkey Bay are pretty but beware probably not too safe for swimming. Reminded me a bit of Napier with the pebbly beach and steep drop offs. ... read more

We have spent the last couple of days in Blenheim sheltering from the heavy rain forecasted. It didn’t get anywhere as bad as predicted so we managed to get out and about on our bikes. Town here is rather pretty with the Taylor River running through it. There is an awesome walking/biking track that runs both sides of the river all the way out to Taylor Dam. One afternoon we biked down to the Marlborough Museum which has a Wine Exhibition running at the moment. I suspect without this Exhibition it would a fairly average Museum. The Wine Exhibition was interesting but it appeared a little commercial. Fact of the day…………..How many bottles of wine do you get out of a 10 litre bucket of grapes…………approx 4. Sunday and off to the local Marlborough Farmers Market. ... read more

C: We left Wellington on Good Friday heading across the Cook Strait on the aptly named Interislander ferry. It was really busy due to it being the start of the Easter weekend but we were very excited when they brought round (free!) hot cross buns. The crossing takes a little over three hours but the last hour is spent travelling through the dramatic Marlborough sounds which meant beautiful views all around. We collected our next hire car at Picton and then headed off to the centre of the Marlborough wine region, Blenheim. Very little is open on Good Friday so we were relieved to see a nice-looking pub directly opposite our motel. However, they have strange licensing laws which means you can't have a drink on Good Friday without ordering food. As we wanted dinner, this ... read more

A beautiful clear sky this morning so we are on our bikes again and heading on the Tasman Cycle Trail to Tahunanui Beach for a swim. The beach was busy here today, a popular beach for the locals. It’s nice to see all the families here today, making good use of the surrounding playgrounds and picnic areas. Monday and it’s time for a change of scenery. A quick grocery stop and then off to Kina Peninsula for a look. A tidal area that today unfortunately had smelly green weed on it. Been there done that as they say. From here we headed back to Ruby Bay and McKee Memorial Park Camp for the night. We managed to get the same camp spot on the waterfront as the other night. Book, Beer and a view…..can’t complain. The first agenda of the day was to get all the bookings squared out for the remainder of our trip. I've been busy at it throughout yesterday's flight and finally figured out our course of action. Before the offices opened, we grabbed coffee across the street at Zumo, which was surprisingly open at 7am in this sleepy town. They have 7 different roasts and I liked my flat white :). Productive morning. We booked a water taxi for tomorrow's Abel Tasman Coastal Track, got a Queen Charlotte Track pass for Tuesday, and picked up the car. This called for a bite from Robert Harris Coffee…fettuccini frittata, a loaded muffin-looking solid pasta! 1.5hr drive on the windy narrow road took us to Marlborough wine region. V looks comfortable driving on the left side :D. Vineyards started to ... read more

This is Noah-Genda and we have 3 on-board. This morning we picked our daughter J up from Nelson airport and planned our next 5 days with our visitor. Not wanting to waste time we headed towards Marahau, stopping on the way at Motueka. It was low tide and the beach at Motueka went out for miles. On the foreshore is the free Salt Baths, this did have water in it and we saw a lady get out of here but it didn’t look very inviting to me. The Motueka township looks a good place for a stroll but we are on a mission so back on the road. Marahau sits on the west side of Tasman Bay and is where the Abel Tasman National Park walk starts (or finishes depending on which way you go). From ... read more

Well we have crammed a bit in since our last blog. Left Kenepuru Heads on Saturday and headed to Portage where we walked over the Torea Saddle (part of the Queen Charlotte Walk) to Torea Bay. At the top of the hill is a War Memorial to fallen local soldiers. The bay is small but looks like lovely safe anchorage. A good wharf, where Queen Charlotte track walkers can be dropped off by water taxi. If you don’t like roughing it (DOC Camp style) you can organise someone to get you bags dropped off here and taken to the hotel at Portage:). From here we headed onto Havelock to pick up a few supplies. There is a great lookout on the way that sits high on the top of a ridge before you head down to ... read more
