Well we did it ... no not run off and get married when none of you were looking, but "The Nevis". 134m of utter terror. I have never been so scared in my entire life. I was a gibbering wreck. Bryan was as cool as a cucumber.. talk about role reversel on the extreme sports. I was nervous when we arrived, I was green when I saw the "small" 43m bridge and by the time I saw the contraption which I was going to hurl myself off I was distraught. You have to get a cable car to a 'pod' swaying percariously on little metal strings in the middle of the canyon. Everyone ahead of me just walked up to the platform and wheeeeeeeee off they went, not even a pause. Then the guy infront of ... read more

Another lovely day in New Zealand, Picton is a small sea-side town, it's main purpose is that it's the ferry port to Wellington I guess but it's no Rosyth, it's full of nice boats and small yachts, picturesque vila's on the front and a street of nice cafe's and local shops. After more than 4 weeks of on the road travel we're knackered and looking forward to a rest in Fiji, we've decided to spend 18 nights there now and the plan is to do as little as possible, sind a nice wee beach lie in the sun, catch up on some reading and defo no driving. Sure we'll go on day trips and I'm looking forward to a spot of line fishing but resting the bones is the order of the day, or even fortnight. ... read more

Well today we had to leave the beauty of Kaikoura. We both loved the place, it had spectacular scenery and our hostel was so cosy. Anyway we are now on the path back up the coast to Picton. Picton is where we will get the ferry across to Wellington and then drive all day (10 hours) up to Auckland so we can catch our flight to Fiji on Friday. When I say we will drive I really mean Andrew because as much as I have offered he has still not accepted, wonder why?!! We are spending two days in a lovely hostel which has a great garden, fully equipped with spa pool. There are loads of sand flies and other little biting creatures here so I bought some super strength insect repellent, Andrew however is still ... read more

Woke up early this morning for another day at sea, it couldn't be as successful as yesterday, could it? The weather forecast wasn't good but we were lucky, we were out at 8:15 and although it had been raining earlier it was clear and quite bright, partial cloud cover at times but good spotting conditions. We were looking for Lagenorhnchus obscurus, or the Dusky Dolphin, Dusky Dolphins are found in coastal temperate waters of New Zealand, about 20 mins from the coast of Kaikoura. This species is normally found in small pods of 6 to 15 animals, but larger groups of 20 to 500 animals, or massive aggregations of over 1,000, are also common, according to our guide. They are the most highly social and acrobatic of dolphins, they leap, spin, somersault and often associate with ... read more

We left the lovely hostel in Christchurch for a 3 hour drive north to Kaikoura, the drive itself was pleasant, it was a Sunday morning and apart from the odd freight truck the roads were quiet. We got to the hostel around noon and settled it, it's a real small affair, about 7 rooms I've found, really nice though, amazing views over the sea and a lovely garden with a hammock that I've already claimed as my own, loads of fruit growing too so we'll save some pennies by pinching that...... We went out for a wander through the small town and got us some supplies, we were going whale watching at 3pm so wanteed to do a 'reckie' to find the departure point, we found it no problem and took a look inside. It had ... read more

The Queen Charlotte Track is a 72km tramp from Ships Cove in the north of the Queen Charlotte Sounds to Anawika in the south. One of the nicest things about the track is the native bush that lines the walk for most of the time, the views across the sounds, and the nice places to stay on the way. The easiest way to walk the track is to catch a water taxi up to Ships Cove and spend the next few days walking back to Aniwaka. On the way to Ships Cove we were lucky enough to see a pod of Dusky Dolphins, they played for a while in the wake of the boat. We decided to walk the track over three days and two nights, having purchased only enough trekking food (chocolate, cakes and tuna ... read more

I had phoned and booked the Jugglers Rest Backpackers a few days in advance after reading the name in the BBH guide. Sounded like a place I should visit, juggling is one of my now too many hobbies. Going across on the ferry I read in the Lonely Planet - run by professional jugglers! Going to learn some new tricks! True enough after walking across from the ferry point (note: check for free pickups next time) I walk into the yard of the Jugglers Rest and there are guys passing clubs, spinning diablos and a few guitars lying around. Nice, I felt at home straight away. Gary an English guy had come over to New Zealand as a young man, street performing, met his wife, started a juggling shop in Christchurch. He now lives with his ... read more
