I arrived at the ferry terminal in Welly only to bump into a couple I'd met in Taupo. Small world. Turns out we were planning on walking the Queen Charlotte Track on the same days and staying at the same hostel in Picton. And it was a lurvely hostel - free tea/coffee, free breakfast, free pick ups from the ferry (only 500m away but excellent for those of us with so many bags!!) and best off all - free apple crumble and ice cream every night.... yummmmmmmmmmy. Could have stayed here a while, almost did.... ahhhh On my first day in Picton I went on the post boat around the Marlborough Sounds and discovered 2 things - the Sounds are flooded rivers rather than glacial valleys and despite the number of homes around the Sounds comparatively ... read more

I know you all have been waiting to read about the conclusion of Tanya and I's South Island Tour. It is hard to believe that it has been over a month since I returned from such an incredible trip. It is hard to pick a favorite part of the trip because we were able to see and do such incredible things. We concluded our trip with a couple days spent along the Queen Charlotte Track. The track is 67km and takes about 5 days to hike. It is also possible to bike the track. The track "starts" at the northern point of Ship's Cove and is accessible by the track itself or by water. Due to our limited time we were only able to travel a short portion of the track. We took a water taxi ... read more

About a week and a half ago I left the North Island from Wellington city and arrived in Picton. This ferry trip was filled with beauty all around. Upon arrival there were no longer any buses and I wanted to go to the town of Kaikoura right away, so I stuck out my thumb and was picked up in less than 30 seconds. It took three rides to make it to the town but what a great experience to be able to still hitch hike in this day and age. (By the way I have been hitching the whole time since then and have met marvellous people who have even opened up their homes to me.) In Kaikoura it was a dream come true for me, I swam with the Dusky Dolphin which is known to ... read more

Tuesday was one of these days we don't do much (which doesn't happen so often). We started the day with a pancake breakfast, with chocolate sirup and banana... (and thanks again Sheli for the recipe!), and spent a few hours at Angie and Gordon's to read about the North island and plan ahead. Then we went to the "Gardens of the World" in Hope, a town near Nelson. We found it in the Lonely Planet but it seems that nobody heard of this place, even in the info in Nelson they didn't know what we were talking about... Anyway it was a lovely garden with trees and plants from different areas in the world. We had big expectations from dinner in the "mussel boys" in Havelock, after having eaten the chowder there a few days ago. ... read more

So today we came back from this wonderful 4 days hike. As I mentioned before, we walked a lot... The first 2 days were very tiring, walking 51 km total (plus some uncounted track to get to the place you sleep...). The nice thing about this track is that you sleep in backpackers, with a shower and a kitchen, and not in a "mountain hut". In additon, the big bag is transferred by a water taxi from one point to the next. So it was just us, some water, some lunch picnic and some goodies (we love marshmalloes here!). The views on the way are, as usual, so beautiful. It's very different from the previous places, as we are by the sea and we see it all the time, bays and coves (=small bays), blue and ... read more

In the early morning we went to our whale watching cruise. We saw 3 whales, but you don’t see much - just a small part of their body and the famous picture of the tail when they go down again. However we did see dolphins, which makes my previous dolphin watching cruise in Akaroa so stupid. We were in the middle of hundreds of Dusky dolphins that love acrobatics and didn’t stop performing for us, jumping and “swimming-dancing”. It was really splendid. We also saw an Albatros. A “side effect” of this trip as the sunrise that we never saw here, and it was amazing too. Then we drove to Picton. We had to return the car in Picton on 16/3, but our plan showed that we need 2 more days. So we called the company ... read more

Dearest woo-foos! Back to Queenstown, though my body has left the seductive deathwish capital where I lept to my demise via Canyon Swing, my heart still beats with its life force. Thus, I'll write in the present tense: This town crackles with energy. It's the 7th most popular vacation destination in the WORLD and it's not hard to see why. It's nestled at the base of the Remarkables mountains, home of Mordor for you Lord of the Rings freakies, and one of the only two mountain chains in the world that run true north and south.(The Andes sharing the honor). They look quite sinister with their jagged peaks looking like giant gray teeth chewing the sky to bits. Lake Wakatipu serves as the waterway that the town wraps itself around. Come nightful, everyone here is ... read more

From Wellington and the Picton ferry we needed to visit some friends in Blenheim, Val and john, to pick up a package. We met them for the first time and they very hospitably took us to visit their favourite vineyard for a little winetasting. We tasted the wines available and enjoyed the cheeses, and had a lovely time. Also in Blenheim we booked ourselves in with the Blenheim dive centre to complete our PADI dive training - Sarah's cold had gone now and we were all set to get certified! We went with the expert instructors down to the marina, did our exercises to prove we knew our stuff - and we're now certified PADI Open Water divers.... read more
