After our night in Nelson it was back on the bus again - this time to Picton where we met up with some more of the girls, Joanne (another brit) and Delis (a kiwi), and got a boat over to Furneaux lodge in the Marlborough Sounds... home for the next 3 nights. We'd chosen to spend New Years here for a number of reasons... we wanted to be near the sea but away from the hussle of a big town or city (well, big by NZ standards), it's a beautiful spot, it was in the right direction back to Welly... oh and there was a live band playing for NYE!! We had a tiny bit of blagging to do when we arrived at Furneaux lodge..... Joanne and Aileen were late additions to the trip and by ... read more

today we drove to my home town....picton!! we left kaikoura early....melissa insisted on driving. i clutched the sides of my seat and grunted a little of nervousness. HEY NOW!! IT WAS NOT BAD AT ALL. IN FACT, I WAS RATHER GOOD. I DIDN'T STALL A SINGLE TIME, I ONLY SHIFTED INTO 2ND INSTEAD OF 4TH (OPPS!) ONCE AND ONLY DROVE ON THE WRONG SIDE OF THE ROAD A HANDFUL OF TIMES. ALL IN ALL, VERY SAFE, VERY NICE. very windy and very scary. heh. as soon as we arrived in picton we hopped on a wine tour. we travelled through marlborough....famous for it's savignon blanc (BOY I DO LOVE ME A GOOD SAVVY)....and tasted tons of wine. the weather was wonderful. sun shining down on us (THE WINE WENT TO OUR HEADS FASTER THAT WAY). WE ... read more

here are some photos of my last few days in picton. all together rather uneventful. i finished up cleaning work and driving work yesterday. all paid up and ready to party....to bring in the new year with style!! well, maybe not so much style, but fun in a city at least!! today i drove from picton to christchurch....it took most of the day. the drive was beautiful. i have come to expect nothing less. i saw a few snow covered peaks descending to black sand beaches. much of the drive i spent on roads carved into moutnain sides looking out onto the water. the roads doubled back and forth around the mountains and through them with scary dark tunnels. i rounded on corner and was looking out onto a small bay....i saw something move above the ... read more

After leaving Kaikoura we had a day to kill before getting the ferry across to North Island so we spent a day in Nelson. I think the main point of Nelson is to use it as a base to explore the Abel Tasman National Park but we didn't really have time. So barely worth a blog entry really. We stayed on a massive campsite with the rest of New Zealand ( all of them ) and were woken up the next day by their Hi-de-hi style tanoy to tell us the endless activities on offer ( massages and caravan washing ). We opted for the caravan washing. Actually no, we drove to Picton to get our ferry. ... read more

well, it's christmas day and i am missing ardie knocking on my door at 7am. more than rising early i am missing my family and christmas food. i'll tell you why it doesn't feel like christmas....why i'm (as my mom put it in a recent email) feeling droopy. i worked this morning....scrubbing toilets til noon (they pay double on christmas day i hear). i will continue to drive to the ferry three times today and as usual visit the gym and read in between. in fact today is a droopy day for everyone here....we're all a little lonely i think. all used to being with family and in the northern hemisphere's harsh weather for christmas. the sun shining bright and hot, walking around in tanks and shorts is unusual for a christmas day. this may well ... read more

chambermaiding is as fun as cleaning could be. we joke and talk all while scrubbing bathrooms and making beds. heh. the women i work with called me 'cheeky' the other day. they explained that it means that i'm a smartass....or something. one of them offered to take me to the local marae which is where the maori people of the area congregate for tribal meetings. think 'whale rider.' it's a real honor to be welcomed onto a marae as a guest so i'm excited. driving the van is fun too. i've made friends with the guys who park next to me: graham and 'grumpy steve' (who isn't grumpy at all....just older). they tell me silly jokes about kiwis and stories about the people who have stayed in their backpackers over the years. i get to laugh ... read more

Hello Everyone, The rest of the group had a very successful canyoning trip. All in all they abseiled (repelled) down 11 walls, the biggest being over a 120 foot sheer wall/waterfall. They jumped off a couple of cliffs, the highest one was about 22 feet (Justin conquered the big one and the others were happy to stick to the under 15 foot jumps...still a big accomplishment ;) The day consisted of many adrenaline rushes and pushing themselves to the limit. When the guide told them they had finished the canyon, everyone let out a sigh of relief only to find out they still had to jump off a 80-90 foot cliff and zip line down to the finish with only the guide to slow them down. They enjoyed themselves thoroughly. Before leaving Wanaka we all went ... read more

i have settled into picton and it is settling into me. i had a moment the other day while riding my bike to work. an 'ahh' moment, relaxed and comfortable. i turned a corner onto an empty road toward the ocean, let go of the handle bars and road like a kid down the street. my arms were out and my fingers outstretched. i let the wind blow around me as i picked up speed down the hill. it felt so good. the photos are of my first day off. by the way, the chambermaiding and driving are turning out to be great fun. my first day off i spent on the track. i chose 'the snout' because it had the best name of all of them. i spent four peaceful hours walking. some of it ... read more

From Queenstown where I last wrote, I made my way south on the Intercity bus to Te Anau. Here I would wait for my friends Brian and Caroline to catch me up, for Brian and I would soon embark on the Kepler track together, leaving Caroline to watch movies, drink wine and kick back and relax. I spent a couple of days in Te Anau doing not much of anything, though this proved a profitable use of time come the walk itself. I spent the majority of my time in the YHA place in Te Anau which had a great range of movies for lending. One I managed to fit in was "Whale Rider", a tale about Maori in the present day which was deeply affecting and I recommend it to everyone (on a side note, ... read more

a few days ago michelle and i arrived in picton after an amazing trip on the ferry from wellington. michelle decided she wanted to keep travelling and i already had some work set up in exchange for accomodation here so i stayed. we arrived at sequoia lodge, where i'm working, which was filled with construction workers and missing an outside wall. 'great' i thought 'an open air hostel.' you know when nervousness sets in and a pit makes itself known in your belly.... that's how i felt as we were shown around. immediately i began brainstorming ways to get out of the situation. we settled in as my belly unsettled itself and went to bed. the next morning michelle and i said our see you laters and she was off. at some point during the night ... read more
