We didn’t do much in Murchison as it kept raining. The town is rather small and quiet but is a mecca for white water rafting and kayaking. The surrounding countryside is quite beautiful. The nearby Buller Gorge is another adrenaline spot with jet boats and zip lines as well as the far gentler pursuit of panning for gold in the Buller River and a few other nearby locations. We needed to head for Christchurch again as Kevin has gone and opened an account on Trade Me, (Nzs version of eBay) and bought 2 push bikes!! We did a little detour up to Hanmer Springs, a place I instantly liked. We went for a ride in a Hagglund caterpillar track thing that can go up near vertical inclines and lean over at ridiculous angles……. It was a ... read more

Three days into it and we're having the time of our lives. We got the campervan on Saturday (don't forget we're a day ahead of you, so technicallly I'm writing this from the future), so the real New Zealand adventure has begun. I will never forget hitting the road for the first time, on the opposite side of the road, sitting in the driver seat on the right side of the vehicle. I admit, the first couple turn offs were a bit hairy, but after a few kilometers (thats right we use km's down here) I got used to it. I still get momentary flashes of "am I doing this right?" But I assure you, its all gravy. We headed out of the garden city of Christchurch to our first destination, Hanmer Springs. Just driving in ... read more

Our day started with an early morning walk along Picton's waterfront and marina, where we seen the Inter Island ferry off on its voyage to the North Island. It was very encouraging to see a clear sunny sky after the rain and overcast conditions yesterday. After an hour or so it was time to begin our journey down the east coast. A short drive from Picton is Blenheim, the Marlbrough district largest town. The area which surrounds the town is well known as a centre of New Zealand's wine industry. It enjoys one of New Zealand’s sunniest climates, with hot, relatively dry summers and crisp winters. On the outskirts of the town we stopped at one of the many wineries in the area where we had some delicious breakfast in the restaurant, and picked up some ... read more

We're knackered. Exhausted and barely able to stay awake at 8pm. But its a good, worn out, had a fantastic week-end kind of tired. Hanmer Springs is beautiful & spectacular - something we've already come to expect from New Zealand. It was Mark's birthday yesterday and to celebrate a group of us headed north for the week-end. An hour and half later we were in Hanmer Springs, famous since the 1920's for it's therapeutic geo-thermal mineral springs. Mmmmmm. We soaked for several hours in water that varied between 36 & 41 degrees celsius, depending on which pool we picked. There's something really wonderful about sitting up to your neck in warm water watching the steam rise as the rain falls into the pool. After this we headed back to the holiday house we'd rented for the ... read more

We took off for our second weekend camping jaunt - this time to Hanmer Springs for the Labour Day long weekend. We arrived at the 'Top Ten' camp-site on the Saturday afternoon and the weather was fantastic - the sun was shining and we needed to set up our new 'beach shelter' in order to escape the heat. We anticipated having to sleep outside that night due to the tropical conditions... After a quick jaunt into town for lunch and to pick up some supplies we headed back to finish setting up camp just as the rain started. Someone had joked that snow was forecast but we didn't believe it. That evening we headed back into town to spend the evening in our favourite Hanmer pub and watched our province, Canterbury, win the Air New Zealand ... read more

On Thursday, Janet from work and I took off for Hanmer Springs for the day. It was absolutely perfect weather, blue sky and warm sun. The drive up was pleasant, about an hour and a half of winding roads and pastures full of sheep. It's springtime now so there were lots of little lambs. I felt like such a tourist, getting all worked up at seeing a field full of sheep. Definitely took too many pictures of sheep along the way! Hanmer Springs is a pretty small town, very cute and quaint. We grabbed some lunch at a little cafe and enjoyed our food out on the patio, along with the company of several small birds. After lunch we wandered up through some of the little lanes and checked out some of the shops. Later we ... read more

In an effort to get away and enjoy as much of New Zealand as we can during our short stay, we took off for an overnight to Hanmer Springs. It was a five hour drive but we made several stops along the way. Our first stop was to visit Cookie World. We bought way too many bags of broken cookies and Bumper Bars. They did give us lots to nibble on over the weekend. We then stopped at an outlet mall - our first mall visit and our first outlet store. I think it about did Gregg in - He tolerates shopping on his own, but not with us! We were able to get Syd new ski pants and some ski gloves for her and Graham, before Gregg forced us all back in the car. We ... read more

We were quite tired from yesterday’s 570km drive so we slept in until we had to get up to check out and head over to the resort. The thermal springs are a series of pools with water heated to varying temperatures. The hottest were the sulphur pools at 40 degrees…warm, but not as hot as the thermal springs at Lightning Ridge in NSW. We mainly bathed in the 38 degree Hexagonal pools. They were largely shaded, which is what we needed since it was quite a hot day…it was actually quite odd being in a hot pool on a hot day. Once we finished for lunch we drove on back to Christchurch. We dropped off our car, having done 4,298.4 kms. We went back to our motel, and await our 3:45am wake up call for the ... read more

Day 2 After breakfast, went with Ruby for a walk in the district near our Hotel. We noticed a impressive Clock Tower near a major intersection. A few blocks away, we came upon the Avon River. The Avon river basically runs through the city of Christchurch, eventually running into the sea at Sunmner. We went as far as the bridge (which is one of the entrances to the Botanic Gardens), then we went back to the Hotel. Around 10:00 am we left the Hotel for a 185 km drive to Hanmer Springs (My sister & families & my Mum & Dad had other plans for the day). The drive out of Christchurch was quite easy. As the population is only just over 400,000 there is not too much traffi... read more
