Golden Bay We woke up after an ok night sleep but have now realised we have a slow puncture in our air bed. Ok for Zo, but by the morning I am pretty much on the floor. Packed up our tent, becoming very efficient now at putting up and taking apart the tent. In the car we got and headed up to the southern most tip of Golden Bay at Takaka. Again it was a lovely drive but took us quite a while. When we got to Takaka we decided to stay at a beach front camp in Pohara. There isn’t much to do in Pohara but it was right on the beach. We set up our camp and headed off to see the Pupu springs. They are the clearest natural spring in the world and ... read more

Hanmer Springs is most notable for its thermal spa pools and easing our aching limbs after all the hiking we'd done in the last couple weeks was the main thing on our minds. We enjoyed a nice meal and a couple beers in the local the night before and then, donning bikinis and freezing our behinds off in what seemed like subzero temperatures, we skipped from one hot spa to the next, luxuriating in the 38 degree bath like pools. Ahh bliss. The only problem with a couple of the 9 pools at the spa was the smell of sulphur that was emitted, but other than that, we enjoyed a nice relaxing dip, before taking a stroll around the lovely town, perusing in the shops and indulging our sweet tooth once again by buying loads of ... read more

After all the hard work we have been doing in the pub we decided to give ourselves something to look forward to and remind ourselves why it is that we are in New Zealand in the first place and that its not all about work. What better place to do that than Hanmer springs. Our house mates Bea and Sebastian always have Tuesdays off and also own a car, so after a little organisation we requested Monday night and Tuesday off from work so that all of us could head up to the mountains. We set off around 7ish which meant the drive was all the more beautiful as we could see the light changing over the landscape. Actually I say we, I only got to see half of it as I slept much of the ... read more

26th February 2009 - HOT POOLS IN HANMER.....LUSH!!! Nat drove us to Hanmer Springs. It was a dry sunny day and so the scenery was back on top form!! Awesome!! It took a couple of hours to get there and surprisingly I managed to stay awake for the journey despite a distinct lack of sleep the previous night!! Hanmer was a pretty small town....a few shops, a library, some gardens and the reason we had gone.....Hanmer Springs Spa!! Relaxation coming up!! First things first, we checked into the hostel...another YHA. Once again it was a home from home. Clean and tidy, light, big kitchen, no bunk beds and just a generally nice feel about it. Once settled in we had a wander around the town, got some bits from the supermarket and then went back and ... read more

26/2/09 = Hot Pools in Hanmer Springs Terrible, terrible nights sleep last night! So bad, it was actually comical in parts. Firstly, woke up an innumerable amount of times to awful, itchy sandfly bites. They now look and feel like chickenpox and even rival that level of itchiness! Way, way worse than mosquito bites. On top of this, we also had one of the worlds worst ever snorers in our room. He was no ordinary snorer...he could have won awards. He woke every single person up in room, until at 3am, we were all awake. Lady sleeping on bunk above me was especially mad. She was rolling around, banging her arms, huffing and puffing; think it actually could have been her that woke me up. Anyway, once awake, none of us could get back to sleep, ... read more

It didn't stop raining all night so another wet morning but it's not dampening our mood! We are off to the springs this morning. We got there for 10am when it opened. It's only NZ$14 pp for a day pass which is about 5 pounds each and you can stay there as long as you wanted. We went to the thermal pools, there were quite a few of them. We got changed then headed to one of the mineral and sulfar pools at 37 degres - nice and warm! It rained all morning but it was a nice contrast! The pools were steaming, some had water jets and there were 3 pools, just sulfar, that smelt of egg and they were at 40 and 41 degres - we left them until last! I had a skin ... read more

Upon time today, packed up a very wet tent and had breakfast with milk!! a novelty for us!!! then off to Hanmer Springs. It's about 2hrs 15 from Christchurch. Fun drive in the rain but the scenary is still stunning even in the rain! The rain and steam was rolling through the hills... We arrived around 12pm found a campsite, Alpine Tourist Park ( only $20 a night! ), set up our very wet tent and had a looka round. The campsites are so much better here than Australia and cheaper too! We went into the small town, had a look at the shops and had a coffee. We went down the road to do a walk along the river, the rain had eased off a bit so we wanted to make the most of it. ... read more
