Day 4 - Thursday 17th March –St Paddy’s day We’re in Dunedin and have a very busy day of events ahead of us! First stop...Renee’s Wonderland....Cadbury World! We wandered through the visitor centre and then took the 75 minute tour through Cadbury’s. It was soooo much fun, would recommend it to anyone. You even get free chocolate to sample along the way and it has a great finale. The guide takes you to the top of the purple silo and you get to watch one tonne of chocolate drop from above you and then you have to duck as it splatters all over the stairs and walls around you. Awesome fun! While wandering through one of the packing stations Matt, being the cheeky Matt he is, jokingly asked one of the packers for a free sample, ... read more

The weather here in New Zealand can start rainy and finish hot and sunny or flip and be freezing. Finally, the perfect day had arrived for an exploratory journey to Otago's Tunnel Beach, just outside Dunedin. Being a ginger, I haven't spent much time at the beaches growing up in Ontario, as I have never tanned but rather freckle and burn, I often joke of my combustibility. But I was prepared for anything today, with SPF 90, sunglasses, and fast drying clothes, in case of a swim. The journey here involved boarding the Dunedin bus downtown and the ride lasted about an hour, followed by a fifteen minute walk through farmers fields to reach the access point for this beach. The beach was nothing like the beaches I had previously experienced, as beaches in New Zealand ... read more

Unfortunately not much to say on this day really. It was our free day in Dunedin and we had a trip on a tour bus. Sorry, but that's about it. We did visit the steepest road in the world though - Baldwin Street. We revisted this the next day and walked up to the top. Its so steep that when they laid the road, they couldn't lay tarmac as it slid off down the hill. yeah pretty crazy :) The next day we got up pretty early and went on to Lake Tekapo. This place was pretty amazing and the ride there was great. It was a glorious sunny day and we managed to see Mount Cook - New Zealand's highest mountain. In the evening we got to go on an observatory tour, unfortunately, it wasn't ... read more

Today was always going to be a long day when it came to travelling. We were up at 6am, to get the bus at 6.45, with a change and then on to the Catlins Coaster bus that would get into our next major city - Dunedin at 7.30pm. As with all the buses though, the time flies by. It's a combination of awesome scenery, wild life and the ramblings of the bus driver. Who in the most case was an ex mental patient nurse called Brian. First stop on the Catlins Coaster (CC) bus was Waipapa point. This boasts a fur sea lion colony and a pretty neat lighthouse. At this point the next piece of land 3,000 km away (apart from Stewart Island) is Antartica, and as you looked into the distance you could see ... read more

We drove out to the Otago Peninsula with stunning scenery across to Dunedin and across the harbour. The Royal Albatross Centre was rapidly packing up with tourists and the only way to see the birds we were informed was by a guided walk. Seeing as it was cold and windy and Tony didn’t want to spend too much time on his feet we decided to explore for ourselves and low and behold we found a free film on these splendid birds and then, following a short walk down the cliff, we encountered several of them flying around as well as a seal trying manfully but in vain to be washed up on the rocks by the rough, white crested waves. Moral of the story – beware of guided tours!. From here we took the higher and ... read more

Thought I'd give you a quick update although there's not much to tell you. I haven't done much on the South Island except lots of sightseeing and driving! The drive from Haast to Wanaka was just jaw-dropping. I've done some lovely walks (not mammoth treks) and seen the big glaciers. I wanted to do tours of Milford and Doubtful Sounds (flights and cruises and maybe some more kayaking) but the weather was not good and no planes were taking off so I have come to Dunedin instead and will do the Sounds another day. Yesterday I spent the day on Otago Peninsular - touring the Albatross and Yellow Eyed Penguin Centres - fabulous - both very rare. It's awe-inspiring to see the albatross in flight - sometimes several at a time in formation. Been shopping today!! ... read more

Dunedin to Duntroon February 26th – March 2nd 2011 Dunedin As we'd both been to Dunedin before, we treated ourselves to a couple of relaxing days and didn't rush around trying to see everything. It was also a good chance to catch up with friends and for Samara to interact with another baby. We greatly appreciate Aaron, Yvette and Stella welcoming us into their home, especially as they already had friends from Christchurch with them. It was great sleeping inside for a few nights and having access to a bathroom that didn't involve a long drop! We also had some of the best dinners on this trip so far – the benefits of a decent kitchen. We had two full days in the city. The first we went out to the Otago Peninsula. Following Aaron and ... read more

… ... read more

Another week of classes have gone by and another exciting weekend exploring the Otago landscape. Today, Marie, Amy and I - the three Canadians - boarded a train. The university was nice enough to plan a Welcome Train Trip for all the international students and we were sure to take full advantage of this travel opportunity. The landscape was full of rolling hills, sheep, the odd hairy goat and lots of beautiful trees. Yes, the grass is green here in New Zealand but was beginning to fade yellow and brown as it is actually Fall here. We spent the entire trip leaning out to grab pictures, as the windows in the train caused too much glare. On the return trip, the train stopped at this region called Pukerangi - which Marie was nice enough to mime ... read more
