Day 4 - Thursday 17th March –St Paddy’s day
We’re in Dunedin and have a very busy day of events ahead of us!
First stop...Renee’s Wonderland....Cadbury World!
We wandered through the visitor centre and then took the 75 minute tour through Cadbury’s. It was soooo much fun, would recommend it to anyone. You even get free chocolate to sample along the way and it has a great finale. The guide takes you to the top of the purple silo and you get to watch one tonne of chocolate drop from above you and then you have to duck as it splatters all over the stairs and walls around you. Awesome fun! While wandering through one of the packing stations Matt, being the cheeky Matt he is, jokingly asked one of the packers for a free sample, she then, to everyone’s surprise tossed a whole packet of chocolate caramels up and over the security gate to us. Was great, everyone cheered, Matt’s pockets were bulging as we left the tour; we even have some samples for you, Dad, more than worth the $18 entry fee.
Larnach castle was the next port of call after we were loaded up
on chocolate. Yum! We headed up the hill at about 12.15pm and returned to Dunedin around 6.30pm both trips were made through the fog. The castle was quite eerie, perhaps because legend has it one of William Larnach’s 3 wives haunts the castle but it was fascinating and the grounds were lovely. We thought of Nana while walking around them knowing how much she would have loved them and wondered if her and Grandad visited the castle during all their camper travels. We stopped and had lunch in the rather grand old Ballroom.
The Royal Albatross centre was next on the list for sightseeing. We decided to try and save ourselves $100 and see if we could see them without paying for the tour. Apparently anything in the late afternoon is best to spot Albatross flying and that was exactly what we saw. About 4pm on the hill we spotted our first Albatross and after that that got closer and closer to us, swopping in and out. Was a successful outing and we even got a glimpse at more fur seals down on the rocks.
We attempted for the 3rd time to try and spot a penguin so
went to Sandfly bay, according to the Lonely Planet guide it’s a good site for spotting penguin. Again NONE were spotted but we did get up close and personal to Seal lions lying on the beach and at the end of the beach on the rocks!
The night ended at Thai Hanoi for dinner, which Renee discovered years ago on her first trip to Dunedin when Dan and George introduced it to her and we last had it at New Years when we were down here for Renee’s work. Was yum!
So far we have ticked 5 off the “101 MUST-DO’S for Kiwis”. Yay!
