Spring is here and with it the prospect of colour and growth and hope....a good time to be thinking of the trip next year.Like the purple magnolia flowering outside, which will all be gone to leaf in a month, so will our trip bloom and be forgotten...but that is a bit too deep at the moment! A first blog to get the trip underway. We have much to do before we head off.... read more

Crikey! -Liz does a bungy Jump!!! Near Queenstown is the birthplace of bungy. We went out just for a look and what do you know but next moment the Sheila’s only gone and leapt 43m into the void. Well actually we watched some other much younger folk do the real deal and good on them, but not for us thanks. Queenstown was good fun good to socialise with some of the locals, or tourists. Somebody tell Andy Dempster he should get his svelte torso over here and up some of these mountains. The Remarkables are remarkable. We camped at a place called Te Anau where Alan got excited by the sight of some tree ferns on a walk which was part of the famous Kepler track. Apparently the larger ones are very old. Really Alan, how ... read more

Invercargill to Dunedin So off we went again, further down south and further down the thermometer! The first stop was Invarcargill, not much to say about the place really although we did go to a museum and a chocolate café. We also stopped off at Bluff to try their big green mussels. We had planned a 5 day trip through the Catlins with lots of hiking, however, the weather turned this into a 1 day trip and we ran most of the walks we went on! We found shelter in a walk through an old abandoned rail tunnel, which was worth the trip alone to get an insight into Tory’s over active imagination! We therefore made it to Dunedin ahead of schedule so we spent a good 4 days there which was just as well as ... read more

It was bloody freezing last night. I got up in the middle of the night to put an extra blanket on the beds. I even put the fan heater on for a while!. It was a slow start to the day. We got the 11:00 bus into Dunedin. Dunedin Is the old Gaelic name for Edinburgh. There is a lot of Scottish influence on the city. The municipal building; Town Hall, Station etc. are all built in a Scottish style. We went to the visitors information centre to book a tour to the Otago Peninsula. Ended up booking a wildlife cruise that leaves at 15:00. So wee have some time to kill. I go for a haircut that passes all of 30 seconds. We go and get some lunch. It is a lovely day and we ... read more

We set off at about 09:00 to drive to Dunedin We retrace the drive to Queenstown as far back as Cromwell. On the way we pass a fast flowing stream called “Roaring Meg” and we have a photo-stop. We then pick up highway 8 to drive southeast towards Dunedin. When we set off it was good weather in Queenstown and the forecast for Dunedin was showers in the morning with sunshine in the afternoon. But as we approach Dunedin it is still overcast with showers. We checked into the site at around 13:30. We took it easy most of the afternoon, and caught the bus into Dunedin at around 18:00 and spent an hour having a quick look round. Came back to the campervan and had a meal. Nothing much more to say for today. Tomorrow ... read more

After an extended stay in Wellington I am now in Dunedin. The guys decided to stay on. We might meet up again in the North island, but i'm running out of time, so i had to make a move. I really want to spend some time in Queenstown! It been a bit of a mammoth drive, but a very scenic one! The Ferry crossing from Welly, to Picton was really good! I took an early ferry. So the sun was still really low. The colors in the Sky were amazing! I took the coastal route, only stopping in Christchurch. It was a terrible sight!! My heart really goes out to people there! And now here i am in Dunedin. Haven't really had much of a chance to look around properly. Just had a drive round. I ... read more

March 18-20 Queenstown Also known as the ‘Adrenaline Capital of the World’ and for a good reason. If there is a hill, there is a platform on it for jumping, flying, or diving off of. The there is the jumping out of perfectly good airplanes, sliding along cables and swinging over cliffs. You name it, if it creates an adrenaline rush, it is here. Our only attempt at fun was riding the cable car to the top of the hill and then playing around on the luge track. No jumping off of things. Otherwise, another pretty, touristy community in amongst the mountains. We decided to have a few laid back days walking around the area and sitting on the beach. Though I hate to admit it, but the warm sweaters have come out and I ... read more
