Today was to be a big day. Brunch this morning was all hyped up, it was supposed to be 'flash' for McKenzies. It turned out to be alright, eggs, OJ, hash browns, that type of thing. After brunch the plan was to play some basketball at the primary school up Vivian St. with a bunch of Kiwis. There turned out to be 11 of us, so we got to play 5 on 5 with a sub, it was sweet, I was excited. Basketball is not the national sport, or even too popular by any means here in NZ. Its all about rugby. We started playing and Andy, another American, and I started laughing because many of the Kiwis were passing the ball like it was a rugby ball. It was a pass similar to a ... read more

Tonight I went to Cumberland 1st floor to check my email and I bumped into Doug, Jason, and Jeremy playing ping pong. But it wasn't ping pong. They put the two tables together to make one huge wide one. They played that the ball had to hit the table and then the ground before you could hit it back over. It was crazy. Than with my their we played 2 on 2, with 4 balls. It was 'extreme.' They made the game up tonight and I was the 4th person to play it. They came up with some wierd name for it, something like 'Spagetti shit face.' haha. Well thats it for now, I gotta go to class soon.... read more

Today I finally got to play some basketball. There were only four of us, Kam, Jeremy, another Kam, and I. It was great to finally get to play after not touching a basketball for about a month. The sport is not popular here, so the Kiwis don't tend to play often and the competition seems to be less fierce than in the US. Hopefully next time we will have more people and get a full court game going. Josh (Scribe) the security guard in Unicomm said that he would like to play next time and he is going to try to organize a game between McKenzies and Cumberland, I hope it happens. I can't wait to play again!... read more

Today I climbed all the way up Mt. Victoria during the afternoon. I left McKenzies at about 3:30, I decided to go because it was great weather. I reached the summit about 45 minutes later. I was overwhelmed with the magnificent view. You could see all the parts of Wellington and many of the bays in the region. I stayed there for a couple hours and brought lunch in my backpack. The sunset was amazing, it was a very clear day. I took many pictures and some videos. I had a great time just sitting on the top of the mountain in the wind enjoying the scenery. On the way back I went to the grocery store. When I got back I was exhausted. It's only 11 at night but im ready for bed. I ... read more

Hi, Trust we're all fine and dandy? We're both fine although I'm still recovering from the news that my 5 years old nephew has joined a local football club in Canada called Halifax Celtic!! Would you Adam and Eve it. Still, I'll cheer for him if he ever scores a goal...as longs as its an own goal. We've finally managed to tidy our place enough to take some decent photos as people have been asking to see what our flat looks likw - well, our folks anyway! So here's some photos - it's over to you Lloyd as we go through the keyhole.... Jo-Ann's out tonight with her work colleagues so I have a rare night in on my own. And what better way to spend it than dropping a line to family and friends. Ok, ... read more

Today it has been raining on and off all day. Tonight I plan on making my first really good dinner, I got lots of good food from the market. The teachers' union at school is going on strike, so it looks like there might not be school tomorrow. After dinner I saw Andy, an American who came to VUW by himself (not with a program like AustraLearn). Me and him had an epic battle against Ben and Kristen's roommate. We won the 5th game by me hitting the last shot, it was amazing. I also had some amazing ice cream called Caramello, it is chocolate with a little vanilla and caramel. It was an excellent dessert.... read more

hi everyone! (here are some pictures from the Te Papa Museum trip!!) The Wellington International Film Fest is here! and I am enjoying it! The whole city is a buzz. The film fest parralells other fests like Sundance in CA and the Berlin fest and Cannes. It may not be as prestigious, but it definately does not fall short in what films it brings to NZ. The fest started last friday and it goes through until the end of july I believe. I got a ticket to the first film of the festival - last friday at 10 30 am. I have been studying my guide for the fest like its the best novel ever written-there are so many choices. I decided to see- Alejandro Amenbar's "The Sea Inside" http://www.theseainside.com/-winner of best foreign film in the ... read more

Not much new. Haven't been able to get too many good shots of the city. The last 12 days have been gloomy and rainy, so getting out to take pictures hasn't been on the list. Work is still getting along. Only a few more weeks and then I get take a vacation....oh wait, I am on vacation. We are going skiing at the New Zealand club fields which are non-profit ski areas that are fun by a club or organization. They are much cheaper and claim to have dryer snow and are don't have crowds. The winter has picked up a bit since last time. I will get better pictures up soon. We are headed to Te Papa museum today. Six floors with lots of New Zealand stuff and Maori history. ... read more

Yesterday, Saturday was the Talent Quest (Show) for Unicomm. It was very entertaining. Two of my friends, Jason and Doug got on stage and sang a very controversial song in front of at least a hundred residents, it was hilarious. Tonight Kristen, Kim, and I saw Fantastic 4, it was so so, nothing special. On the way back I bought a 2.25 liter bottle of L&P Soda because I have never seen it before. It was actually really good NZ soda. It tastes like a mix between sprite and ginger ale. The L&P logo is classic, "World Famous in New Zealand." My classes are going pretty well. The teaching methods are slightly different here. In 3 out of my 4 papers (classes) I have been having guest lecturers, who are very knowledgable in the subject ... read more
