Angus here reporting on a sensational sporting weekend that I experienced in Wellington. On Saturday, Jo-Ann and I went to see the Hurricanes play the Bulls in rugby’s Super 12. It’s a league made up of 12 teams from the southern hemisphere - 5 from NZ, 4 from South Africa and 3 from Australia. Each team plays the other once and then the top 4 in the league contest the semi-finals, and then there’s final. The Hurricanes represent the Wellington region and the Bulls are based in Pretoria, the capital of South Africa. The rugby is renowned for being high pace, very skilled with some seriously hard tackling but usually yields plenty of tries. However, the game we went to was total pants! Defences were on top and with the poor passing, turnovers and lack of ... read more

Hi All, Spent the last week in Wellington, which as I heard, is very similar to San Francisco. It's quite quaint and charming and sits both on the water and in the hillsides. It was great to luxuriate in the hotel with Trisha. We had fun! I didn't take too many pictures there because I spent most of the week in the downtown area. And now, the unthinkable has happened... I left my laptop at a friend's house in Welly while I am on my Kiwi Experience. I feel okay so far. But I've only been gone one day... So, I have commenced my Kiwi Experience trip and am spending my first night in Nelson. I took a bunch of photos sailing into the Marlborough Sounds but since I am on the hostel computer, I am ... read more

Dearest friends and family, Hello from Napier, Art Deco capital of the world!! I will mercifully spare you accounts of my travel because nothing really uncomfortable has happened yet, and we all know that stories about nasty occurences make for better entertainment. I have, however, left Te Nikau retreat. :-( The weather cleared up beautifully last week and it was how I imagined Hawaii would be like. I should have some awesome pictures in a bit, once the English gal Claire (who hates beetroots, sushi, hummus, spicy stuff, couscous, etc, thus giving merit to the stereotype that Brits -- hi, Roger -- don't like anything remotely exotic and tend to baby their palates with the usual grey-colored cuisine their ancestors have ground into their culture) e-mails me the photos she took with her camera. If ... read more

It was another cracking day so we resolved that we had no option but to hit the beach. Simon stayed at home and worked on his music (making up mixes for a part-Maori, part-Indian wedding) and the rest of us, kids n'all, headed up the Kapiti Coast to Waikanae Beach. The drive was about an hour but it was worth it - there are beaches much closer to the city, even some in the city, but they get a bit busy. There were only a handful of people on this beach which made it easier to keep an eye on the kids and we had a great view out towards the Kapiti Island which is a wildlife sanctuary. Liann had prepared a bit of a feast and we noshed ourselves sensless after letting the kids play ... read more

We arrived in Wellington at 7:30am on 3rd March and we were met at the airport by our friends, Simon & Liann who we will be staying with until we find our own digs....which will take a while! Angus used to play basketball (if that's what you call it!) with Simon when he and Liann were over in the UK for 2 years and we stayed with them when we came to New Zealand last year on our honeymoon. They are so amazingly hospitable and we have fun with their kids, Isabella who is 3 and Dominic who is 11 months. We've had a few trips into the city of Wellington which is about 40 minutes on the train from Silverstream where we are staying. Welly's a great city with a lovely harbour and quayside, loads ... read more

That morning we set off from Phakapapa towards Wellington. This was the first time the van wouldn't start straight away and we also noticed a considerable amount of smoke for about 20 minutes while the engine presumably warmed fully. At the time I commented that there may be a problem with one of the piston rings and set about explaining the internal combustion engine to Sarah while we drove. By lunchtime we were very close to Palmerston North and a quick look in the guidebook told us there were some award-winning gardens there, so we made for the town centre and had lunch out in the open before visiting the rose gardens and heading on towards Wellington. Our intended destination in Wellington was the home of some relatives I hadn't met in a long time - ... read more

Because of a huge debockle with my ticket to New Zealand (which I don't want to get into...I'll just leave it at that) I had to stay in Manly Beach Australia for a couple more days. But that actually ended up working out perfectly, because during my last two days there I got a chance to play tons of volleyball. I entered a recreation tourney on Saturday (and my team won our net) and then I was supposed to play in a money tourney but it got rained out (see photos). The weather ended up clearing up and so I went back down to the courts and played for another 4 hours (I'm still a little sore). So Monday morning (which is Sunday lunch time for you guys) I hopped on a plane and was finally ... read more

Today began in an unusual way for us, an earthquake rocked Wellington! It measured 5.6 on the Richter scale and we slept through it so it couldn't have been major. There are a lot of earthquakes here because New Zealand lier across the crack of two earth plates, the Australian plate and the Pacific plate. Anyway, I was up early and wandering around the capital streets at 8am looking for a boozer showing the football. I've missed a lot of football since leaving home and i'm dealing with it in my own way, remember I normally watch around 8 live games a week and countless review shows, Fiona permitting! Anyway I have managed to cope so far. I watched a game in a bookies in LA a few weeks ago but this game I was not ... read more

Up early for the long drive down to Capital City, Wellington is about 400 KM's away and should be a about a 5 hour drive with a luch stop half way. We arrive in Wellington about 3pm and it looks a very trendy place, the drive in along the docks is nice and the city looks very European, houses on hills and cliffs in loads of different styles and colours, it has a good feel about it. We find our zebra print hostel without much trouble, slight problem though, there is no hostel parking, there is on street parking outside the front door but it's $4 an hour, it's 60 cents here in Nelson, Capital City strikes again, it's George Street in Edinburgh all over again so I abandon the car with the usual "Meter Reader" ... read more

I usually have a problem waking up in the morning and require about half an hour to get out of bed, however that was not a problem today. A 5.5 magnitude earthquake hit in the Wellington region and it seemed like a pretty big one. At first I thought it was a strong gust of wind but I saw the walls bending back and forth. It was pretty freaky and I could feel a surge of adrenaline hit me as I sat in bed. Everything seemed to return to normal when I was going to work, the radio guys were talking about it and speculating when the 'big one' was gonna hit. At work, it was the topic of conversation in the morning. We had a few smaller ones a couple days ago and they were ... read more
