today thursday 13th July 2006 me............Ian Stephen Fowles, jumped 12000 feet for a moving plane and lived to tell the tale............heres my story (And for all you people who dont or cant read, i have the DVD of it just wait until im back) the morning started off like any other, me waking up after being asleep for the night. although somehow this day felt different, i felt very very scared. This may have been because the day before me and Lucy had booked to do a sky dive this day, but then again it could have been anything really. we got ready and had to phone the company to see if we would still be able to jump today due to the weather had kept changing. luck was shining on us (If you could call ... read more

Ian and I left Rotorua early in the morning so I could drop him off in Taupo (Toe-Paw) where he booked our hostel (which had the super cool duvet cover). I then turned around and drove back on myself for about half an hour (was nice to be alone in the car actually, I had Fix You blaring from your mix CD Small!) to do the most extreme thing I have done... After remembering how much I love white water rafting and with my last lot of rafting in New Zealand not being that challenging, I decided to do the most extreme thing availiable on white water rapids, which is Sledging. You get given a small plastic sledge which has two handles left and right at the top which you use to pull up your body ... read more

Yesterday was spent mostly by driving to Taupo where the boys were planning on Ski Diving! I knew it was something I must do but doing it was another story!!!!!!(James was with me on that one!!!!!).......................... I knew I would def not have done it if the boys weren't there and would be so proud if I was to do it!!!!!............................... so I booked it there and then at the hostel so there was no turning back(weather permitting!)!!!!!! (had quite a good sleep considering!!!!!) We were picked up a 1pm in a white stretch limo(part of the package!!!)minus the champagne! I was bricking it and so was James, but that made me feel slightly better! Got there and got kitted up. We went up in 2 journeys as the plane only carries 3 jumpers at a ... read more

Hello to all. Since my last entry, things have changed quite a bit. I'm now in Taupo, a smaller town in the middle of the North Island. I'm making my way down to the South Island eventually to actually live and work, but taking the scenic route on the way. This place (all over) is absoutley amazing. The landscape is like none other and everywhere you look it's like that. From mountains, to snow capped volcanos, rivers, streams, lakes, waterfalls etc. I did something yesterday that was such a rush... Went Skydiving here in Taupo!! Wow. That's all I can say. Jumped out at 12,000 feet over the lake and mountains with a Tandum master strapped to my back. Once the shoot popped, you felt like you were floating and could see for miles. We did ... read more

Hello from Welly, this is part two of our travel adventure driving down from Auckland to Wellington - sorry I’ve been a bit slow writing this one. Keeping up with World Cup news is more of a priority at the moment. Anyway I restart last month’s adventure from Lake Taupo, the largest freshwater lake in NZ and located bang smack in the middle of the North Island. As with much of the New Zealand countryside it's very beautiful and owes its existence to plate tectonics. Until a couple of thousand years ago it was a blocked up volcano. A subsequent eruption ripped apart the whole mountain, created an enormous crater and covered most of New Zealand in ash. The largest ever recorded eruption, the noise could be heard as far away as China! Anyways this crater ... read more

yep, its raining today - oh well we have been really bloody lucky up until now, its raining so hard though that it was bouncing off the roof of the van this morning and woke us up!!! hee hee. Yesterday we drove up the west coast for what seemed like forever, we started off and it was quite cloudy and extremely windy. The van was going all over the road, but chris managed to keep it on the road with his good driving skills! We were heading towards Taranaki where there is a massive mountian, basically on an otherwise flat stretch of land. We were about 150km away and we coudl see it looming in the distance!!!! it was really cool. As we got nearer and nearer, the clouds began to gather more and more - ... read more

***DISCLAIMER - I've been drinking with the locals in Taupo since 5PM (it's now 11:30PM), so forgive any typos, inappropriate statements, etc. The bartender kept giving us jager-bombs...pretty much to encourage this unbelievably brash American lady to continue to take her top off (which she did). So, I sit here typing on my hostel computer in Taupo at the second hostel I've ever stayed at (last night was the first)...I really didn't plan to go the hostel route, although I think my fellow Magic Bus travellers would think I was a complete snob if I didn't do it. Actually, it's been really cool...granted, most of the other hostellers are at least 8 years younger than me. Last night, in Rotorua, we got back to the hostel after dinner to find about 75 drunk twenty-somethings crammed in ... read more

Today will probally remain the highlight of the trip, unless I do it again and higher that is, okay today I did my skydive, at Freefall, in Taupo, the adventure capital of the north with a big lake. Was only a few hours ago, I want the moment preserved. My trusty brick of an Mp3 provided the bus with the banging tunes to get us in the mood and I was in the first group of 5 to go up, in a very crowded little plane, my 'jumper' was Pete from Germany (good, efficient, sensible and safe people) Was a good take off and climb and was remarkably calm for someone who suffers vertigo on a stepladder. The pro divers made a few jokes about 'we'll strap you on, if we remember' etc but i was ... read more
