Another glorious sunny day dawns so I make use of my free morning with a saunter around the little peninsula that sticks out into the lake at Rotorua. I start at the busy end where there are people queuing for boat trips, helicopter rides and water plane rides. The shore side is heaving with little black teal with golden eyes which I find out are New Zealand Scaup or Papa go. There are some odd looking black swans in amongst the teal with smatterings of red around their beaks. I've noticed a few geocaches are hidden along this part of the lakeside so hope I get to find my furthest from home ever cache today. The walk takes me through pretty woodland and where it's boggy there's a boardwalk. Reading the slightly knackered interpretive panels I ... read more

After reading how annoyed Intercity bus drivers get if you're not at the stop 15 minutes before the bus is due to depart, I made it a super efficient 25 minutes early and still wasn't the first. Stan our driver looks pretty ancient. I think it's the knee length socks setting off his wrinkly knees that gives this away. But he doesn't look that scary so when a couple of lads roll up 2 minutes before we're due to set off I'm not surprised that they escape with a bit of a whinge rather than a full blown rant. As we start to make our way out of Auckland I notice how many prefab style buildings there are, most with wooden shuttering and some with corrugated iron roofs. They actually seem quite cute and homey and ... read more

I'm picked up at my hostel and am joined by a young couple from the UK one of whom later turns out to be pretty important, but more of that later. We join a coach load of Americans who are a lovely bunch of mostly pensioners. It seems to be the thing to do when you retire in the US, go on large group coach tours in far flung places. I've met them all over. They always seem to have some indignity or other to suffer. This time it was having to wear lanyards with their names on as if saying 'If you find this old person, please look after them and ring this number so we can come pick them up'. On other trips I've seen them being forced to wear identical baseball hats, or ... read more

Rotorua youth hostel is peachy. I'm in a four bed female only room and no bunks! The reception staff are lovely and put a map in my hand and give me directions to the nearest supermarket. It's a bit of a Lidl moment at the Rotorua Pak 'n Save, but I manage to find enough veggie delights. Chores sorted I decide to start off my holiday activities with some inactivity at the Polynesian Spa. I opt for the slightly salacious sounding 'adults only' section. Fortunately, or unfortunately (depending on your proclivities) this just means no screaming kids jumping in the pools and splashing everyone rather than some car key swapping scenario. The pools are built on an historic Maori site The Pupunitanga, which means ambush, to remember the many battles fought here. Years later in 1882 ... read more

Yesterday we said goodbye to the Coromandel and headed down to Rotorua. It was 30 degrees with blue skies travelling down, let's hope it stays that way for us... I like to think we deserve it ?? We stopped off at one of my favourite places Mount Monganui for a couple of hours. We walked along the promenade looking at the lovely seaview pads on the waterfront before settling down and sunbathing, yes sunbathing! (there is a first for everything) at the beach. After that we carried on down to Rotorua where we were greated by the sulphuric (rotten eggy) stench and spent the night at a lovely Top 10 holiday park. Next day we were up bright and early and visited Wai-o-Tapu national park at the 'Wai-o-Tapu Thermal Wonderland'. It was absolutely amazing walking amongst ... read more

Our next place to visit on North Island was Rotorua. We left Napier on a cool but bright day and journeyed through lots of agricultural land, mainly growing fruit (apricots, nectarines, peaches, plums and grapes). There were far fewer campervans on the roads and we saw our first deer on this island on this leg of the trip - maybe there were more vegetarians in this neck of the woods? There were many more really pretty churches though and the landscape was gently undulating with hills rather than mountains, all seemingly covered with trees, trees, there were so many trees and, consequently, so many log lorries. We stopped for a comfort break in Taupo where scalding hot water from the underground activity trickled into the lake and attracted many wildfowl to the warmer waters, including the ... read more

We're off to New Zealand for Tarawera Ultramarathon! V found out about this race even before the Ultra World Tours was incepted. The race looked homey and went through some gorgeous-looking lush trail. We signed up shortly after for the 2015 event. Unfortunately, we withdrew by October '14 because V's toe was still in bad shape. Fast forward to July '15, we gave another go at our bucket list. Since being the part of Ultra World Tours, it has quickly gained international popularity. Let's see how it is. This will be my first time ever in Oceania, woot woot! After completing our epic self-supported 57miler on El Camino de Finisterre, we picked up the new training cycle in good shape. We complete the self-prescribed long runs without kinks. But the extreme training run during the holiday ... read more

So after an evening out at whale bay (beautiful location – just a pitty we ran into reggae night with a DJ who liked to go into the meaning of each song he was about to play – just play the song already!!) we had another early morning and rushed out to Rotarua for White Water rafting! Yay!! Em was shaking with nerves as it was her first time but we donned another flattering wetsuit and booties and were ready to hit the water. The group going with us were running late so we got to hit the water with just our boat – Mary and I were up the front and Jack our guide enjoyed splashing us with as many waves and waterfalls he could aim at us! Because we were waiting for the other ... read more

It sounds like a dream or some kind of psychosis... Fluorescent yellow ponds, giant soapy geysers, green water falls, bubbling pools of sulphur, the The Devil's Ink Pots and a steaming multicoloured lake. I wasn't asleep though and as far as I know I hadn't had a break with reality. This was Wai-O-Tapu, the "Sacred Waters". In this Thermal Wonderland everything I thought I knew about the world seemed to be turned upside down. We arrived on a dull and drizzly morning and were redirected from the visitor's centre to another site about a mile away. Here people were already gathering to watch the Lady Knox Geyser erupt. We had a brief explanation as to how the geyser was discovered... It turned out that some local prisoners tried to wash their clothes in the geyser's warm ... read more
