September 25 – Rotorua’s main claim to fame is its volcanic features, so today we explored one of these sites. Wai-O-Tapu is 18 square kilometers and has a number of thermal features including vents, fumaroles, boiling mud and colorful pools with names like Devil’s Bath, Champagne Pool and Artist’s Palette. It was like a mini Yellow Stone. The most prominent feature in the park is the Lady Knox Geyser that erupts at 10:15 every day (with a little help.) As nature is never this punctual, some surfactant is added to the cone and within a few minutes, off it goes shooting water (and some suds) high into the air! This trick of getting the geyser to erupt was first discovered by prisoners in the early 1900’s who used the vent to clean their clothes. The hot ... read more

September 22 – Our last day in Auckland was dreary, wet, and cold with a stiff breeze. Pat dropped us off at the rental car agency. Goodbyes are always hard but, in this case, we will get to meet again in another couple of weeks before we leave for Canada. I was very tired today and had a hard time keeping awake as David drove to Rotorua. (Perhaps it was the three glasses of wine I had last night – a lot for me.) I did wake from time to time as there were fierce downpours and stiff winds blowing much of the way. Later, we learned that there were power outages in much of Auckland after we left. It seems this kind of thing happens when we leave a place; Darwin also lost power for ... read more

My first few weeks have been quite a challenge. A pinball to every fancy of the imagination, my mind chose to jump on a rollercoaster of emotions, leaving me tossed, tumbled, turned upside down and just a little fed up. I almost chucked it all in the Pacific and walked away. It’s funny though, how the universe works because as I sit and write about the past few weeks and think of how difficult they were, Rumi gives me that knowing look which has become so aggravating, one eyebrow raised and a half smile on his lips: What sort of person says that he or she wants to be polished and pure, then complains about being handled roughly? Well fine then, Mr. Sassy Pants! And so I continued tramping, from Cape Reinga in the north down ... read more

We woke to the most amazing view, unfortunately we had to get going quickly as we had to deliver the tents into town. It was such a glorious day it was worth it though as we arrived at the Gondola before it got busy. Theo took off immediately and Nate was quite happy to do his first solo run. Finn loved riding along and was amazingly co-operative. The twins were quite content to crawl around in the sun and charm the tourists so I got to relax a bit. My turn for a run while Steve gave the twins an early lunch. I got a nice smooth cart so had a lovely run down. My second run we did the intermediate track but Nate wanted to do the Scenic track by himself. I waited for him ... read more

A busy day for hubby resulted in a later than planned exit from Auckland. The purpose of this trip was to deliver all the scout tents to Rotorua for repair, the benefit to us was a holiday :) we had no idea where we were going or what the bach would be like. One of my favourite types of holiday. So despite a late start and not finishing loading the trailer until after 6pm we started on our trip. Our initial problem was a major traffic jam at our offramp, 5 cars had been silly and caused us almost an hours delay! The kids coped ok, a few squarks from the twins and grumbles from the big boys but soon enough we were underway. To my surprise even the big boys fell asleep even before we ... read more

The molten smell drifts through the crisp morning air as dozens of tourists surround a small mound bellowing a small stream of white smoke from the top. I sit on a cold step, with my arms firmly shoved deep within my pockets to warm up my fingers as I am struggling to move them. It feels ridiculously cold to the point where the moment my breath escapes from the warmth of my mouth, it creates an easily visible cloud of steam. Here I sit wondering whether if this was the best decision I have ever made. The day started out rather normally I was waiting for a bus to arrive so I could start a tour that for some reason I decided to purchase even though I have been to the Wai-O-Tapu Wonderland before. I guess ... read more

There are certain inevitabilities that you face in life, such as birth, death and taxes. Well if you venture to the Volcanic Plateau in the Beautiful region of the Bay of Plenty in New Zealand's North Island, specifically the much hyped tourist destination of Rotorua you will face another certainty. This certainty is when you step out of your vehicle, doesn't really matter what mode of transport you are going to be greeted by a very powerful odour. This smell, well what causes the smell is what in fact has made the small town of Rotorua famous, not only in New Zealand, but around the world. It is all because of the volcanic activity, which create a sulphuric smell in the air. It doesn't take very long to create a comparison between this odour and another ... read more

Goodday everyone, this is my 3rd blog from Aotearoa (New Zealand) and is about my activities and experiences during early March. Right now, end of May, winter is really closing in as the country experienced cold temperatures these nights with -5 C where I work and light snowfall. The South Island got quite a lot of snow but it's all expected to melt away soon as the weather will soon become warmer according to the forecasts. After the Coromandel Peninsula I left with Kara, cousin of my friend Johnny, to Tauranga where she lives. I spent the night there to be able to board a bus to Rotorua the next morning. I booked a hostel right next to the Information Centre in the city centre; easy and convenient. I had a good time at this hostel ... read more
