So after a successful day yesterday we are up early to make our way slowly to the Bay of Islands, final destination Russell. We decided to check out the Karikari peninsula and my guide tells me that Maitia Bay is the best destination. It is reached after a short stretch along a gravel road and through a camp site. I must be honest that my husband was not blown away by this cove but I thought it was all picturesque and we went for a short walk along it. Not as dramatic and grand and sweeping as some of the others we have seen may account for the first impression. We had a conversation as we walked actually of how we would rate NZ beaches from the best we have seen so far and had to ... read more

DAY 1. - Left Auckland via our Mate Dean to pick up trailer load of household goods we were to transport to Ahipara in return for free accomodation at his "holiday home". Kids in transit (Khaela and Pheonix)- 5.5 hr trip was a breeze. Stopped off at Kawakawa to see Hundertwasser Toilets, which we were all intrigued by. (creative minds would appreciate this). Arriving in Kaitaia, we stocked up at Pak n Save, then headed the 14km's to Ahipara. Arrived at Dean's, a lovely place, elevated with beautiful sea views and a view of the entire 90mile beach loop - right up to the Cape. After a hastly unload we headed to Deans mums a few k's away to uplift a quad bike we had been offered to enjoy for the duration of our stay. Deans ... read more

So today is the day we have booked our bus tour to Cape Reinga. Again the sun is shining and as the lady at reception said this is a good day for it! We booked our tour with Harrisons and met the bus in Kaitaia at 8.45 am for a 9am start. Seeing Kaitaia made me feel good about our choice to stay in Ahipara. While Kaitaia was pretty much a town, granted it had a lot more shops and cafe's to offer, Ahipara was the more scenic choice with the beach right outside your front door. We stopped for a pancake breakfast in Kaitaia which was a pretty yummy start to the day. It was a very cheery welcome at reception and they were busy getting the bus ready. After a quick stop in town ... read more

Planning Finally a proper trip for a whole four days! As I say I have been working and as with casual work it's usally on the weekends but there it was a whole weekend off, well I had to cancel one shift to make it a long weekend. Of course the planning then had to be quick and that to be honest usually stresses me out. I had recently officially bought a car to get me to and from work so travel itself was not the problem. We decided to do two nights, Thursday and Friday, in a place which gave us access to Cape Reinga and then one night in the Bay of Islands. Our Lonely planet guide recommended a hostel in Ahipara, reviews on line looked good and they had a double room available ... read more

Here is a photo of our vehicle - yes, we will be cozy and won't be able to throw our toys out of the cot! We have a tent and and also an awning that can go off either the side or back of the vehicle - so there you go - a 3 roomed mobile house.... read more

16/11/09 We headed in the Onehunga and picked up our colourfull wicked camper van. After we signed all the papers and did the legal stuff we were on our way. Off we went up the road to find a petrol station (as they give it you empty). After driving for about 5 minutes the van ran out of fuel so we had to walk back to wicked camper hire and they kindly gave us a lift back with a jerry can, finally we were on our way. We drove north on highway one to Wangaparaoa where we stopped off for an hour for some dinner and our first walk on a beach. Afterwards we drove further North to Pakiri were we found a campsite on the beach for the night. The beach was beautifull and we ... read more

Hey! Just want to do a quick post about our day trip to the top of New Zealand before I do a blog about the rest of what's been happening with me! So on Saturday just past we got the bus at 7am to do the tour of pretty much the whole of Northland, our bus was actually a lorry, modified to get people on like a bus. It needed to be a truck cause the route is on a lot of rubbish roads, as well as a beach. So we headed pretty much straight up to the Cape, only stopping off at a bakery (top bakery in NZ - think that was a pun tbh) for morning tea and in a forest to look at the Kauri trees which are seriously old, they can live ... read more

While I realize that I have been a little slack on my blog lately, I have to say that the way I've been spending my time lately makes sitting in front of a computer seem a bit of a bore. But, given that it has been a while since my last blog I am kind of looking forward to sitting back and recounting all of the memories of the past couple of weeks... The week after getting back from my sailing trip seemed rather short (recovering took a good full day of napping) and was spent mainly around the Auckland area. I visited with Lena (one of the girls that I had met in Hawaii) throughout the week, as she arrived into Auckland on Tuesday morning and stuck around for a few days before heading south. ... read more

So we headed to Northland in search of warm weather. We found warm welcomes but not much for weather. Stopping in Whangarei to visit family friends Chip and Barbara (who moved from Wilmington a number of years ago) and explore the area on our way north. In light wind we sailed around infront of their beautiful farm estate, hiked Mt Manaia in heavy winds and caught some fun surf on a sunny day. The sun here is stronger than about anywhere else, because of the weak ozone above, so a clear sky goes a long way in warming you up. We left the comfort of a home away from home to head for Pahia in search of boats, jobs and boating jobs. Pahia is a the little Wrightsville Beach of NZ - which was still rather ... read more
