Our first stop after setting off from the B&B with our motorhome was the supermarket to stock up on the essentials like beer and wine and of course the not so essentials like food. We headed out of Auckland travelling over to the east coast for our first stop at Waiwera, the campsite was a little basic but the location was stunning, we parked the motorhome right on the sea front with the sea just yards away. There were hot water pools nearby and we went for a walk along the sea front, it was quite cold but the sand under our feet was warm. We spotted a couple of unusual birds on the shore amongst a group of oyster catchers and then found an area marked off to the public on the dunes with signs ... read more

Into my second week of work and I was only in for two days ! This conveniently tied in with a midweek birthday so I didn’t have to worry about getting up the next day after going out on the lash. Also went bowling for the first time in about five years! So was a wee bit rusty to start with (first two goes = 1 pin and gutter ball = shit). Played a couple of games and I managed to rustle up some average scores. Had nice and sunny weather on the Thursday so I went to One Tree Hill- another volcanic peak - around 180m high that also backs on to Cornwall Park which is really nice and scenic. Unfortunately I couldn’t get my dodgy Cannon camera to get a good picture. After fiddling ... read more

Hi all, finally hit New Zealand, added a map to show you how far travelled so far N.B did not stop at all the pin points! Had to put them on to follow the roads! Picked up my campervan after my 13 hour flight and waiting two hours until the depot opened! Got it for six weeks while I tour both Islands. Campervan is a six speed diesel turbo Transit with shower, toilet, 3 ring gas hob, hot water, fridge, toaster, kettle, large double bed or as table and benches plus utensils etc, proper little home from home on wheels! Headed out of Auckland after stopping for food shopping and buying myself a guitar, need the practice, from "Bungalow Bills" a nice geordie fella! He said when i leave he guaranteed a resale price if i ... read more

After 3 ½ months of working in Keri Keri it was time to move on. The Mandarin thinning season was finished and so Me, Tim, Janet and Leslie squeezed into Manolito again and set of for a road trip around Northland (the state north of Auckland). After getting the car packed we headed South West and towards an area called the Waipoua Forest. This is a famous forest in New Zealand because it is home to the biggest collection of Kauri trees (some of the oldest growing and biggest trees in the world). And of course there were loads of them. The biggest called Tane Mahuta (or Lord of the Forest in Maori) was the first one we saw and as we drove down through the forest the road was lined with the monsters on either ... read more

A morning of picking up the van (much better than previous ones we think), getting some shopping in (only left a little in the supermarket for the locals) and trying to navigate out of Auckland with lousy maps (not too long and we did manage to avoid the toll road!). So we took the road north towards the Bay of Islands, stopping en route for a needed coffee in McDonalds to see if they have free WiFi here too ... unfortunately they don’t, so I’m not quite sure when we’re going to be able to upload our blogs - John is certain we’ll find somewhere, so fingers crossed! The upside is that we don’t have to seek out McDonalds while we’re in NZ!! First impressions of NZ: its very green and quite lush compared to Oz ... read more

Maybe not literally our own back yard, but compared to many of the places we have been, this long weekend was just up the road. Our own backyard, just up the road and right up our alley? Too many cliches already! But a slow cruise in the kombi, stopping where and when we wanted, loads of long walks along loads of long beaches (and some not so long beaches), exploring new places, spending time in the fresh air, sitting out under the stars (until we got too cold) - totally right up our alley!! Like many travellers we've spoken to, there is so much locally (and throughout NZ) that we haven't seen yet, we are too busy heading off to far flung places that sometimes we forget where we live and how amazing it is. Yes, ... read more

... read more

... read more
