A shaky start to High Andes 2010 We have a group of adventurers, standing by as details are sorted out in Chile after the devastating earthquake and resulting tsunami, that has wreaked havoc in the city of Conception and the surrounding area. There are still a lot of logistical challenges in front of us before we are on our moto’s and heading North, away from the destruction. How ever today there was a reported 6.2 earthquake in Antofagasta, in the North. It is a blessing that Gerardo and family are all safe, as his two boys were in Valdivia, south of Conception and his daughter was on a flight to Antofagasta, in the North, the flight was diverted to Puerto Montt. It will be interesting to see how much drama we will have, to get ... read more

The South Pacific Migration is one the greatest yet little appreciated stories in human history. From 30000 BC to 1000 AD, groups originating from South China traveled to the South Pacific Islands and down into New Zealand. The humble sweet potato suggests that some groups may have even made it to South America. There are Maori legends that suggest they may have even made it Antarctica! Somehow the Maori lost the navigational arts of their forefathers that brought them to these southern islands, but they never forgot that they came from somewhere else. When Captain Cook arrived in 1769, one of his guests from the Cook Islands was able to communicate with the Maori fairly well. When the Maori arrived in New Zealand, they found great trees, the kauri, and chicken-sized flightless birds that had never ... read more

It was great to have company for dinner that night but it was even more exciting to me that they were wanting to continue traveling with me. They decided that, even though I was wanting to go to a place even further up north that they had already been, they would still continue to travel with me. The place I wanted to go was suggested to me by two separate and unrelated parties at completely separate times. The first time I heard about it was from Megan and Jason, the people who sold me the car. The second was from a family that attended the CS Church in Whangarei. They both strongly urged me to go see Maitai Bay up on the Kerikeri Peninsula. So we rolled out of Russel and through Paihia and up to ... read more

Across a shell covered shallow ocean bottom, I wade across to a sand bar and look back at the mountain track I've just completed. The Maungatauhoro Te Hiko (A Journey through Tauhoro Mountain) track is a 2.9 km track through the heart of Wenderholm Regional Park. Wenderholm, meaning winter home, was once home to a prominent European settler, Robert Graham but is now known, as it still stands, as Cauldry House, named for the last owner. I left Piha early this morning in an attempt to go out to Tiritiri Matangi, an island wildlife preserve, but got lost and didn't make the ferry. I headed up to Orewa, where I had planned to spend the night, and from there passed Waiwera and stumbled upon Wenderholm. It was a beautiful hike where at every lookout point you ... read more

Driving back from Mangawhai After our great time in Mangawhai, I (Carla) drove back to Auckland via the fast way. We bypassed a toll road which took us through a beautiful little town called Oneroa. Nick then drove through Auckland and surprisingly enough I managed to navigate him through the big city all on my own to Kumeu, where we took in a car show for the weekend. Avatar 3-D IMAX Once the car show ended on Sunday, we decided to hit up the Avatar movie in downtown Auckland at the Sky City Cinemas3D Imax experience. Luckily we got in but we had to sit in the front row. Did you know some Avatar 3-D graphics were developed in Wellywood (Wellington) and that the costumes and language featured in the film are all inspired by ... read more

On the 23.1.10 we travelled up from Auckland to the Mahurangi Peninsula to visit my cousin Glenn and Family. Glenn has a bach on the waters edge at Jaimeson Bay. What a lovely spot this is and we all had a great day. Joel and Chelle joined us for the day. As usual whenever we travel on the road north, at Puhoi we get caught up in the traffic. This time the traffic line actually moved, although it was at a snails pace. Glenn, Diana and Anthony are always welcoming and the BBQ was already to go. It was decided to have dessert after they all went for a spin in the boat. It was quite windy out on the water, so it was a bit of a bumpy ride in the boat. Joel and Chelle ... read more

Just a quick entry as it was only a quick trip to the caves. We had a couple of couch surfers with us who had been to Abbey Caves (previous entry, different couch surfers!) a couple of times, and wanted to try somewhere different. It had been ages since Colin and I had been to Waipu Caves, so off we went. Waipu is a small settlement south of Whangarei. It was settled by Scots who had travelled from Scotland to Nova Scotia then on to NZ. Waipu is (more or less) on the coast, and the caves are about 20km inland. We took a less direct route through farming country, partly as its nicer than driving along SH1, but also to give Doris and Niki a bit of a tiki tour. We were expecting to be ... read more

After sleeping in on New Years day in an attempt to recuperate from a long night of dancing and fireworks, we got out of the blistering hot room where our 4 other roommates remained virtually comatose. We stepped outside into a beautiful sunny day and headed down to the beach. We found a nice spot on the beach and soaked up the sunshine as best we could, taking advantage of the cloudless sky which happens once every leap year in NZ. After sunbathing for a couple of hours we realized that the sun (and its lack of ozone) was getting the best of us. So much for our resolution of applying sunscreen more liberally. We couldn’t think of another way to bring in the new year than showing off our Canadian colours! 5 hours after setting ... read more

First of all I’d like to let everyone know that the dates are wrong on the pictures. I need to figure out that setting and either change the date or just do away with it altogether. Those photos are real and I did take them myself, and if I didn’t then they were taken by Lenny. I know it’s hard to believe! Once we finally got our car after much anticipation, we hit the first road out of town. Ahhhhhhh! (that is a sigh of relief in case you were wondering although a scream of terror is not completely unthinkable) Liberation doesn’t come close to describing the rush of emotion running through the inner tubes of that little blue 1989 Mazda Cappella on that evening. From there, the three of us, were free to roam about ... read more

Leaving Tauranga Well we finally left Tauranga, after our first three months in New Zealand, most of which we spent trying to work and sometimes working in Tauranga. We were headed to Northland and stopped back at Jeremy's on the way through Auckland. We ended up visiting and staying for the evening. Jeremy got us in contact with some friends of his that live in Mangawhai Heads, about an hour and a half north of Auckland. The next day we headed up to meet Lailene and Mark. The Kiwi Day We went up early in the day and had some fantastic pizza at Waipu, then spent the afternoon swimming and snoozing at Lang's Beach. This little beach has a en we heard a pig running away. We thought the hunt was down for that area and ... read more
