Wednesday 11 February Today I experienced some very excited Kiwi’s when they heard my accent! (“Oh, you’re Scottish”! How wonderful!”, I of course agreed wholeheartedly!). I stayed last night in Waipu Cove, a little south of Waipu. This morning I headed back up to Waipu (I was too late to visit there when I arrived yesterday). So, to explain the Kiwi excitedness: Many years ago during the Highland Clearances a devout Presbyterian by the name of Norman McLeod and some of his flock from Assynt and around emigrated to Nova Scotia, along with many other highlanders who found themselves forced from the land. They settled in a small place called Pictou in Nova Scotia and later moved to what they hoped would be a better place for their settlement called St Anns. Unfortunately, they had some ... read more

Tuesday 10 February More rain overnight and this morning! I shouldn't complain - at least it's not the snow you've all got, and even though it's raining it's still warm! I was planning to go for a sail around the Bay of Islands today, however, since you could hardly see the pier at Paihia I decided against it. I went for a wander around the town and came across a little arts and crafts fair, so bought a few bits fron local crafts people. After this I headed down to the Kawiti glow worm caves at Waiomio - there are more famous caves further south, but I decided that I wanted to see these ones since I was passing anyway. It was quite a captivating sight; to help preserve the caves and the glow worms you ... read more

Monday 9 February This morning it started raining and I’m not sure it stopped all day until just after I pulled into my site on the Bay of Islands. I’d had breakfast and was just getting myself organised to go, when Judy from the van 2 doors up stopped by to invite me over for some fish. The people in another van had been fishing and had been very successful, and couldn’t manage everything and had passed some on to them; they in turn couldn’t manage everything either so she was looking for people to feed! It was a King fish, which is a game fish, and quite common in the waters around this area, and they are huge, and also very, very tasty. We got chatting and it turns out that John, in his younger ... read more

Saturday 7 February So, I survived my first night sleeping in the van. Camping people go to bed quite early; either that or they don’t make much noise once they’re inside their van/tent - I never heard a peep after 10pm last night, which was great for me as I was shattered and needed a good sleep, which I got; my bed is very comfy, although I just need to make sure that I’m organised with everything before I make up the last portion of the bed and get in - once I’m in that’s it until the morning. Once the bed is fully made up there’s just enough room to stand and then climb into bed. Making the bed up consists of turning the rear passenger seat around to face the back, pulling out 2 ... read more

The Moto Adventurers have loaded their motos into the container that is heading for the port of Valparaiso, Chile, and is expected there during the first week of March, with the adventurers flying in on Monday 9th March to begin their 2009 High Andes Adventure. The route will be similar to last year, but of course there will be different dynamics. We have a smaller group than last year, with a couple of riders dropping out for various reasons, so we will be 9 in total. We have Leo Harris, from Christchurch, who will be riding a Kawasaki 650 KLR. You may recall that Leo was booked in for last year, but unfortunately fell off a log splitter and broke his back, well he is back in the saddle and ready to go !! We have ... read more

Cape Reinga 26th November 2008 We drove up (on the road rather than 90 mile beach, as Erica wasn't really up to that), but the journey was pretty awful. Much of the road is unsealed to Cape Reinga, but this is all changing and it is being sealed - unfortunately for us, we hit all the road works. It's pretty different to the way we would do it in the UK - we would cone off one half of the road at a time, allowing traffic on the side not being worked on - notout here! No such safety nonsense - let's work on the road and make the traffic dodge around us and through the bits we are digging up - YEAH! Great fun - I don't think! Poor Erica - talk about shake rattle ... read more

Ahipara 25th - 27th November 2008 This sweet litttle place is close to Kaitai and was to be our base for exploring Cape Reinga. It sits right at the southern end of Ninety Mile Beach. We went down to the beach to swim - the surf was great fun. Our campsite had rustic charm with a log fire burning in the main room at night. Very cosy as the nights still have a chilly edge. We got chattingto a lovely Kiwi couple, Gordon and Marcia, who come from Christchurch - they have said for us to look them up when we get there. People are extremely friendly and welcoming here. ... read more

Can you believe that today, we have been in New Zealand for one whole year? I honestly don't know where the time has gone but it's been quite a journey so far, I can tell you. In these last 12 months we've lived in 3 properties and each had 2 jobs. the culmination of all this though is that we are very happy with our lot - a nice home in the suburbs and decent jobs to boot. As if that wasn't enough, summer's officially here and we've been treated with yet more glorious sunshine. We had a quiet start to the New Year with a relaxing day at home, enjoying an early evening session of badminton in the back garden once the heat of the sun had eased off a little. It was just what ... read more

Hola!!! As much as I was dreading Christmas as I thought id be in the way a bit at Esthers family and thought id be homesick, it was actually really nice and we had a really good time together! Esthers dad picked Steve, Esther, Esthers sister Ria and me up on the morning of the 23rd - the drive took about 4 hours and was really lovely as the scenery was really pretty but unfortunately it started pouring after an hour or so and we couldn’t see anything anymore! Esthers parents live up north in Mangonui, near Doubtless bay and the Bay of Islands! The first day there was a bit weird as I didn’t really know anyone but by the next day I felt at home! Esthers cousin was there with her husband and their ... read more
