Cape Reinga
Me in front of the lighthouse Cape Reinga 26th November 2008
We drove up (on the road rather than 90 mile beach, as Erica wasn't really up to that), but the journey was pretty awful. Much of the road is unsealed to Cape Reinga, but this is all changing and it is being sealed - unfortunately for us, we hit all the road works. It's pretty different to the way we would do it in the UK - we would cone off one half of the road at a time, allowing traffic on the side not being worked on - notout here! No such safety nonsense - let's work on the road and make the traffic dodge around us and through the bits we are digging up - YEAH! Great fun - I don't think! Poor Erica - talk about shake rattle and roll. Rob's driving was great and somehow we ploughed through it - I don't think I could have done it.
It was most DEFINITELY worth it, though. Cape Reinga is an incredible place. The Maoris believe it is where the spirits of the dead finally depart, and you can really see why. The cliffs are very high and the clouds roll in
Cape Reinga
The view down to the sea covering the sea below. When we looked over the cliffs there were times we couldn't see the sea, only swirling cloud. It was like standing on the edge of the world.
We walked down to the lighthouse, in the swirling cloud and stood looking out to sea. Sometimes we could see the sea churning below - it was breathtaking. There are loads of walks around here, but Rob's back was in a lot of pain from pulling it out the week before, so we kept to a very short walk along the cliff tops.
The journey back was just as hair-raising, but it was livened up when we were caught up in a herd of cattle being driven along the road - great fun!!
