Yanis send me this picture, but there one year that the picture has been taken. We can see ohoon, one of my 2 best friends at this time (so with Yanis), in a kind of dance, while I'm dreamin', again, about something not deep at all, I'm sure of that... It was the time where we went everytime it was possible fishing, and we get sometimes big fishes that we cook during the night.... Without worries, bro, of course.... I was for sure playin' gypsy jazz on this photo ! one time again...... read more

We arrived in Paihai (prenonced pie-here) in the Bay of Islands which is in the Northern area of the North island. The drive was very scenic, but after 3 and a half hours in the car we all started to feel a bit like sardines. The car is acually quite big and a bit posh so we did all feel slightly like we were cheating and it didn't really look like a proper Backpacker car. The first day we just walked around Paihai for a while. It had gorgeous beaches and lots of islands scattered around in front of it. We then went over to a town called Russell by car ferry which was, well interesting. The town was very pretty with colonial style buildings. It also boasted the oldest church in New Zealand as it ... read more

Sad to say, I had my last day at KeriKeri Plant Production yesterday. It's hard to describe how I'm feeling. Some parts of me want to stay because I have gotten to know people here. The other part is ready for more uncharted land in New Zealand! I felt at times like I really wasn't a traveller, a foreigner of sorts. I felt like I was a local, going about what most people do. Having a full time job, a car, being stable I guess. One of my co-workers, Sandy, started to get all teary eyed yesterday when she said goodbye to me. Of course, that got me started, so we were both crying and sort of laughing at the same. She said to me, "You damned backpackers! You worm your way into our hearts, and ... read more

After an overnight sail from Auckland, the ship anchors in Bay of Islands on a partly-cloudy morning. Our breakfast entertainment is a school of dolphins playing in the bay. They leap out of the water, their shiny bodies glistening in the morning light. Then, they dive under the water and back out, this time jumping over each other in the air. What a show! We continue our breakfast on the balcony watching the bay slowly come to life with all types of pleasure boats starting out for a day of fun. Many of them come close to our ship to check us out and there is much waving back and forth. Alan and I take the tender to Russell, a quaint town of timbered buildings. Large trees with long leafy branches shade the pebbly beach. There ... read more

Having a great time in the Bay of Islands. Got here on Thursday and it was raining (first rain we had seen for ages) so we had a pretty quiet afternoon. Just made a brief trip into the town centre and the supermarket. Yesterday we went on a cruise of the Bay which was great. As well as a cruise it was a dolphin spotting trip and I am pleased to say we saw loads. We were very lucky on the dolphin spotting front as people we spoke to yesterday only saw two. We saw several pods. The first type of dolphins we saw were bottle nose dolphins. They kept swimming right up to the boat and jumped out of the water several times. I never realised that they were quite so big (they can get ... read more

Drove up to Bay of Islands, stopping to see the world famous toilets in Kawakawa. We stayed in a motel for 2 nights. Were greeted by some crazy guy who smelt of really bad BO, with a bird on his shoulder which had evidently been trained to shit down his back. The rooms were clean though. Looked around town, went to the beach and swam in the sea, had some dinner (really cheap and nice seafood) and a few drinks. Then headed off for Kayaking the following morning. It was fairly choppy with a good breeze blowing and intermittant sunshine. Apart from the impending doom when the rudder fell off and we couldn't steer it was good fun. Paddled round some islands for a few hours, sat on a beach for a bit, then headed back ... read more

Hi all, We are back on land after a fantastice three day cruise on the bay of islands. We had a grat time sailing (not so much because the wind was lite), fishing, kayaking, exploring islands and eating more food than should be legal. Now we are heading for Waitomo to explore glow worm caves. Yes you heard right, the caves have worms in them that glow in the dark. Last week we were staying at a hostel called the tree house in Kohukohu. They were letting us work an hour a day in exchange for free accomodation, that was a sweet deal. During teh week we went to some fantastic hot springs called Ngawha springs and we hiked for a couple of housrs in the giant Kauri trees. All in all out travels are going ... read more

Days 51-53 We were picked up at 7 and drove north up to the Bay of Islands stopping on the way to see some Kauri trees that were big and hard and over 600 years old. We got to our hostel and had a wander down to the beach. We hired a kayak for a couple of hours and had a paddle around the bay. It is a really nice chilled out place. We then chilled on the beach for a bit and had a wander. In the evening we had a couple of drinks and had a BBQ at the hostel. It was really nice. The next day we were picked up early for our day trip to Cape Reinga (the very tip of New Zealand). It was pouring with rain and really windy while ... read more
