Woke up late and had a mad dash to get to the 9.20 ferry that was off on a dolphin chasing day cruise around the bay. Within 10mins, we'd spotted a small pod of Bottle Nose Dolphins just off the coast of one of the islands near by. All cameras to the ready, as we all rushed from port to starboard to try and capture the best short of them leaping, surfacing and mucking around together. They really are stunning animals! We battled the swell and toured around various outlying islands and through the so called 'famous' Hole In The Rock, which kind of does exactly what it says on the tin (see photos), and after a short stop on an unpopulated island for lunch, we re-boarded and donned wet suits at the captains orders ... read more

Woke up this morning in torrential rain, which unrelented for the whole day, not a great start...Had planned to go up 90 mile beach to Cape Reinga, but in the rain, all beaches look the same...So instead we walked through a rainforest of kauri trees - the second biggest in the wold after sequoias - and the only two things missing in this dark rain-drenched jungle were pythons and crocodiles, not that we're complaining...The kauri are mighty elegant trees that climb straight up and have huge trunks, very impressive, see the photos. The big plus of it pissing it down is that noone was bothering us!;-) We then moved to Ngawha hot springs upon the recommendation of a local info office and what a find! Ah the joy of sitting in hot mud when the rain's ... read more

Been a while since we've been in touch so we thought we'd take 5 out of our busy schedule, you know, on a beach, eating well etc. lol Well, from Taupo and the thermals we went down to Tongariro - an amazing place where NZ only desert exists (well, desert by NZ standards), plus three dormanant volcanoes. Unfortunatly weather was poor whilst we were there and put off most of walks and meant we didnt really see the volcano's. However, we did get to slush around in the snow - a good 3-4 inches worth. Like being a big kid again for matt, philpa wasnt so keen to play!!! From here we went back to the west coast, firstly stopping at Whanganui where we did the culture thing - art galleries etc. We had real luxury ... read more

Whew, time to catch up! Here's a bit about what I did a while back. To see more pictures (there's some good ones I promise), go to my clubphoto album. Leah and I left Auckland on Friday afternoon for Bay of Island and Northland, the north tip of the North Island. We’d rented a tiny Toyota Starlet from a place called “Alternative Rentals” (one of the few places that rents to under-21s) and, after a few wrong turns, were on our way out of town. It was my first experience driving on the left side of the road on a major highway (I had a little practice the weekend before), but somehow convinced Leah that she was in good hands. We made our way up the east coast of the northern tip of the North Island. ... read more

I was struggling to make a decision regarding my next destination, so I finally decided to head up to the Bay of Islands for a few days. I stayed in a place called Paihia, which I am sure is a glorious beachside experience when it isn't raining relentlessly. Which is what it did for the majority of my time there. Still, I enjoyed the trip. I saw Cape Regiana, the most northerly point of NZ. You could see an impressive amount of ocean, let me tell you. I saw some Kauri trees - cousins of those huge trees they have around San Fransico - they were the largest trees I have ever seen. On the same trip I tried sandboardng. This involves shooting down massive sanddunes on a small board. Quite exciting, but results in sand ... read more

We arrived in Auckland yesterday afternoon and were pretty tired after the journey but decided to take it in turns to drive and power nap as we travelled north. We started reasonably early today and travelled as far as Waipoura forest to see the Kauri trees. We both reacted in a very similar way when we saw the first really big tree (it sounds a bit funny to say that we were amazed by some trees but wow!) From there we travelled east across the country to the Bay of Islands. It was really pretty but not as spectacular as we expected. We took out a kayak for 2 hours and went for a quick trip around some of the islands. It was pretty windy so the waves were harder work than we would have liked. ... read more

We get up and it is still cold and rainy. We go out for breakfast and book a bus tour that will take us to Cape Reinga, drop us off and pick us up a few days later. Then decide to take a ferry to Russell, the city where the Waitangi Treaty (between English and Maori people) was signed. It was the first capital of NZ for one year until it was moved to Wellington. The Maori (mow, like cow - ree), like the American Indian basically got screwed out of their land (isn’t that what usually happens to native people). Russell is a quaint little seaside town. We go to the museum, see a giant fig tree at the police station, which is also the police officer’s house. We see the Duke of Marlborough hotel, ... read more

We get up early and take a taxi to the bus station. We are down to one bag each and our backpacks. It is late afternoon when we arrive in Paihia. It has been a rainy day and we feel really lucky that the weather was good for our excursion to Rangitoto. The bus driver drops us very close to our hotel, which is a few blocks from the pier and restaurants. Lucky again! We go in to eat, pick up some tourist brochures and come back to our hotel with a bottle of wine. It is still rainy. ... read more

O.k. I've made it up to Paihia eventually ... there was an incredible hitch in the plan when I went to catch the coach at the bottom of the Sky Tower in Auckland and discovered that my ticket was booked for Friday 14th October and not Wednesday 28th September as I had intended!!! What the incredibly useless guy who booked my ticket at the YHA travel office! I've learnt lots of lessons there, but v. proud of myself for insisting on compensation ... They had to sort out my journey for the following day and also put me up in a 4-bed room of my own!! I had the best night sleep so far. From now on I think I'm going to take more control over bookings!!! So now that I'm in Paihia, it's not quite ... read more

- FOOD: A bit of pub grub but otherwise, heated up soup on our gas stove. - PEOPLE: Chatty ferry man to Russell Island, hardly anyone else on Russell Island, mad fisherman at Ninety Mile Beach. - AREA: Beautiful bays and waterfall on the way to the Bay of Islands. NZ's oldest church (so very modern!) on the pretty (and deserted) Russell Island. Ninety Mile Beach - just us and another Escape van ignoring the 'No Camping' signs. - WEATHER: Had been nice until we arrived and it rained. Mon 1st August: We left the nice lifestyle to get back in the campervan for Bay of Islands. On the way we made a brief stop at Whangarei Falls - cute little waterfalls and then carried on up the gorgeous coast line, stopping at Nganguru, Tutukaka and ... read more
