Kawakawa und Waithangi In der Nacht hat’s begonnen zu stürmen und zu regnen – wie in den Wetterprognosen angekündigt. Wir haben uns also richtig entschieden, als wir die beiden Trips buchten. Da hatten wir das schöne Wetter. Wir werden ziemlich früh geweckt vom Motorenlärm der Autos der Gruppe, welche am Vorabend hier eingetroffen ist – Mitglieder eines Automobilclubs von Auckland. Sie haben heute ein Rennen, wahrscheinlich eine Rallye hier in der Gegend. Die Wagen sind dementsprechend „dekoriert“ und aufgemotzt. Sie dröhnen dementsprechend laut und anscheinend muss der Fahrer jeweils mit nervösem Fuss den Motor in Gang halten. Allerdings, und das ist gut, sind sie so schnell weg, wie sie vermutlich nachher auch fahren. Deshalb gibt’s noch eine ungestörte Zusatzrunde Schlaf. Aufwachen in Paihia. Der Tag beginnt mit einem wunderbaren Blick auf die Bay – schönstes Frühlingswetter. Nach einem ausgiebigen Morgenessen, fahren wir downtown Paihia. Der Blick auf den Strand und die Bucht ist grandios. Heute haben wir uns folgendes Tagesprogramm vorgenommen: Am Morgen einkaufen in Paihia und am Nachmittag, mit Fuller’s auf’s Meer hinausfahren, zum bekannten Hole in the Rock. In Paihia genehmigen wir uns noch einen Cappucino und geniessen den Blick auf die smaragdgrüne See vor uns. Das Wetter – postkartenartig, wie gewünscht. Nach dem Einkaufen gibt’s noch einen ersten Spaziergang am Strand – schön, so Zeit verbringen zu können. Nach einem kurzen Mittagslunch im Motel werden wir von Fuller’s, dem Veranstalter von Ferienaktivitäten auf dem Meer abgeholt und zum Pier gebracht. Mit einem modernen Motorka... read more

The internal flight up from Christchurch was easy enough, and we got through the rental procedure of our Apollo Hi-Top camper without any kerfuffle. So far so good with them guys, but obviously the real telling of a rental company is when you return the thing! We picked it up in a rainy Auckland Airport at around midday and set about travelling first to the northern tip of the North Island. Driving out of Auckland, with the dramatic beauty of the South Island fresh in our minds, we were somewhat disheartened to be cruising through pretty bland countryside. All that, however, changes as you move away from Auckland itself and head into the wilderness. So we made our way North from Auckland in Red Dwarf. It was dark by the time we arrived in Pahia so we just cooked some dinner and had a few games of cards. There was a big family from Australia staying at the campsite who had been to a wedding, so the kitchen area was pretty busy and noisy! They were a nice bunch though, and even offered us some mince they had cooked (think they looked at our beans on toast and fell sorry for us!). We set up the car- which is a spacewagon with the back seats removed. Instead is a big chest with storage for dishes, food and bags and a fridge. Northland: Paihia- Maori meaning place of many pas (hill forts). Once there were many tribal wars. Every time blood was spilt, the tribes left the pa to find another. While built for defence, the main function of most pā was for the safe storage of food in pits, especially kumara, a sweet potato. They would dry out the kumara and bury it, then as they travelled they could always source food. These days Paihia is a bustling tourist town, with a ferry to Russell. the old capital of NZ, population of 2000 which rises to 70, 000 in the summer months. Paihia is the gateway to the Bay of islands and Cape Reinga, the very top of the North island. Russell, these days is a sleepy small town with around 1000 people. It has an interesting ... read more
