The Best Button Of All GPS's have made a remarkable difference to self guided touring.... both for the worse and for the better. Picking up my campervan this morning, and with little to no idea of where I was going to end up but knowing that I was wanting to head north, I plugged in the name of Orewa into the GPS. This little seaside town to the north of Auckland allowed me to negotiate traffic and motorways safely to the other side of the Auckland Bridge and then depart the motorway as soon as possible. Her's where GPS's are bad.... they take the adventure out of trying to drive, hold an unfolded map, and instinctively know which lane you need to be in. Here's where they're brilliant.... Once in Orewa and the nerves of driving ... read more

We left Auckland and decided to head up North to Paihia, the town located at the bay of islands. I drove all the way there and loved it (Jon kept calling me hogsley as he wanted to do some driving in our van) - it was great having some freedom! We picked up two German girls who were hitch hiking along the way and gave them a lift to their hostel just around the corner from our campsite. The campsite we stayed at was called Twin Pines and it was right next to Huari Falls - it was a great spot just outside of Paihia and we were the only people there. When we arrived around 6ish, we decided to make up our chilli con carne dinner which ended in abit of a disaster. Jon ended ... read more

I really could have done with a lie in this morning, especially in such a nice bed, unfortunately the other 5 girls are all up at 6.30am to go on a tour. I make the most of being up early and go and sit on the beach to watch the early morning sun rise over the water. I walk into town and head to the information centre to find about a trip to Cape Reinga – the whole purpose of me coming up to Paihia. Whilst there I pick up a leaflet for the Gyunver boat and remember someone telling me along the way that is well worth a trip out on if you have time. So I decide to take the plunge, and as today are the best conditions forecast all week, I just have ... read more

Up early and have a lovely mooch over the bridge to explore the opposite side over the river, which turned out to be just a campsite. So I headed back over and into town for a wander there, though noting was open. I pack up and jump on the shuttle back to Hamilton, which apparently is a new service, otherwise, no way in and out of the town on public transport at the weekend. In Hamilton bus station much to my surprise and joy I find some luggage lockers, so lock my bags away 11am – 1pm and go for a walk along the river path for a couple of hours. Mixed path, mainly alongside the large river, along by the rowing club, by the road, and through some forest, not all scenic but so nice ... read more

Well it's a very long time since I blogged about our travels, mainly because Australia was a major let down so had nothing good to say and also because since being in NZ we've been quite busy going all over on the Kiwi Experience. For anyone that doesn't know the kiwi experience is basically a tour bus that takes you on certain routes around new zealand stopping off at all the major places where you can get off and stay for longer or continue on with the minimum nights of the group you started with. It's apparently nicknamed the f**k bus by a lot of people, mainly because its full of 18-25 year olds all out for one thing, needles to say me and Pete were a little concerned on hearing this AFTER we had booked ... read more

After check-out we rented bikes and cycled out towards Whaitangi, this is the spot where the treaty was signed between the Maori chiefs and the British. The meaning of the original treaty is thought to be very controversial and is still debated in court to this date. Before boarding the bus we had a quick scoot around the town centre; Pahaia is a quaint beachside town and most importantly had TipTop ice cream! The bus to Auckland took just over 3 hours, so we arrived at the hostel just in time for dinner. Bailey's bit: Pahaia is a small quaint seaside village whose main industry is tourism so holiday homes, hotels and restaurants galore! Today's ice cream flavours were; Cat: Pure passion (fruit), James: Orange chocolate chip and rum & raisin. All 3 very good, we ... read more

A 6am start to an incredibly stressful morning! After being told we had secured places on the bus it turned out that actually only one of us had been confirmed and the other was still on the wait list! Luckily 9 no-shows meant everyone got on the bus up to the Bay of Islands. I think we were still in 'Fiji time' because all the activity and accommodation booking sheets were stressing me out! Upon reaching the Bay of Islands we managed to chill out a bit and hopped aboard an afternoon boat cruise out to the bay. We saw a pod of 20 bottle nose dolphins - they are much bigger than any dolphins I've seen before. The boat also took us out to the famous 'hole in the rock' but due to choppy waves ... read more

Kia Ora! Friends & Family So we left Australia after 11 glorious months. Sydney was fantastic, a great place to spend the festive season plus it had a climate which I prefer to the ffffreezing UK. Equally it was great to spend almost 4 weeks there and not spend a cent on accommodation! New Zealand has been another place we'd long wished to visit and for F it was a hope to enjoy some cooler weather. Arriving in Christchurch it was soon raining & windy so she was happy. Since then though it has been glorious weather here in NZ. Christchurch is a sad city. It has suffered greatly from the recent earthquakes (2010 & 2011). Whilst many of those who remain are trying hard to rebuild, it certainly has lost the soul of the major ... read more

Left the Bay of Islands on Thursday and headed to Whangerai which is a NZ city, quite busy after the quiet life of Northland. Headed out to Tutukaka as I didn't want to stay in town other than for shopping and an ATM. Tutukaka was a small inlet which was pretty full of expensive yachts And dive schools. Ventured on to Matapouroi which was quite a decent sized bay with enough surf for bodyboarding but near the river people were using paddle boards. The weather has been quite hot and last night it was a bit humid the result of some nice little mozzie was about twenty bites on my face and around my eyes so look as if someone has punched me at the moment, lovely. Drove to Orewa Friday heading further south, nice beach ... read more
