Dear Blog, Decided to go for a walk this morning before catching the bus to the bay of Islands. I set off in search of a waterfall not far from the hostel. After a hour and half of walking through some spectacular scenery, I spotted it. It was about 3 miles away in the next valley. I had taken a wrong turn at some point on my route (dodgey map), and ended up god knows where. But it was fun nonetheless, and at points felt like breaking into song. But as the sound from the cicadas (not sure of the spelling there) was so loud- like terrible tinitus- noone would have heard me anyway. Didn't see another soul the whole walk, apart from when I had stopped for a quick wee. Typical!!! Got picked up by ... read more

Hello. Did indeed go and meet dave (was Tuesday night) and his fellow travelling people, after waiting by myself in starbucks because Dave was late. This may have been because of his now ridiculously long hair slowing him down. Went for a few beers down by the harbour and then in his hostel, where they were doing 2 for 1. Good. Not a very eventful evening, but was really nice to see a familiar face. Even if it was Dave's. Next morning we (myself, Dave and Dave's friend John) went back to that brilliant coffee place for our Valentines day breakfast and very good coffee, then went to an island called Waheiki or something like that. Famous for wine tasting, so we went to a place called the Mudridge wine reserve for a tasting session, and ... read more

So we arrived in Auckland, a little sad that this was where we end our month in New Zealand but we still had 4 days left and I was determined to fully enjoy them. On first impressions Auckland seemed really quite cool, I had been expecting something awful because most people we met along the way couldn’t stand it here. I was dropped off at the Fat Camel, the hostel we had chosen due to it being a good all rounder; near stuff, not too expensive with free dinner. Liz wasn’t with me at this point so I had to take an executive decision on what to do about the sh#t hole of a room we’d been dealt. Basically it was a cupboard with two bunk beds squeezed in, it had no windows and was ... read more

Next day got back on bus in opposite direction and went to Paihia to go catermaran sailing which entailed lying on a trampoline at the front of the boat and getting a great tan. Sadly life at the "best job in the world has come to an end"...I absolutely loved the free gelato (still tastes soooo good) and enjoyed chatting to the customers but my patience for my boss' lack of managerial skills finally ran out...basically my colleagues and I were running the business for the measly pay of $12 an hour ... Sawa kept on top of stock levels and would inform our boss when we were low (it still took him a week after we had actually run out of an item before he got round to replenishing it), I was doing scheduling, paying the wages and ensuring that we had enough change and Ian had to whip up batches of gelato. We also opened and closed, had sole charge of the store and cashed up at night. ... read more

"There is only 2 things I hate in this world. People that are intolerant of other peoples cultures. And the Dutch!!!"- Austin Powers After not sleeping for the past 2 nights because of a Dutch asshole, we had him kicked out and returned the favour by stealing our i-pod, i-pod charger and voltage converters. Why people are such assholes I don't know. The worst thing about it is that we know who the guy is, we know he stole it, the cops know he stole it, but he has already hidden the goods or got rid of them and there is nothing I can do now. I mean really, who listens to Staind besides Jen anyways. Given my current record in fights outside of hockey, I dont think that that would be the best option to ... read more

Hey everybody Just wanted to check in and see if anyone at all got my last blog. It was a good one too... So if you didn't hopefully you'll get this one and make sure you look back at the last one. It even has pictures, unlike this blog. We are now up north in the Bay of Islands... Quite beautiful. Lots to do. Tomorrow we are going as north as you can go in NZ to Cape Reinga, for some sandboarding and fun stuff like that. We met some really cool people in Mount Maunganui. Tod is a fire fighter from Lake Tahoe, California. Liam is a funny Brit from England who reminds me of Farva a little bit. James and Susan are from England, and I have no idea what James is saying half ... read more

Since hiking and enjoying the beautiful walking tracks is a way of life around these parts, Mel and I walked a bit in the morning, and actually met up with our Russian friend Viya again. After a nice hike to a beautiful lookout of the Bay of Islands, we collected the boys to head for the daily coffeine fix at a fun little cafe. Flat Whites are the specialty here in New Zealand, and i am becoming a big fan of them. Great Espresso with a shot of hot milk, but not quite as much as a late, hmm, maybe they are on to something. But enough about the coffee addictions... after the fix, i headed off to hike to Haruru Falls. A nice hike through a beautiful mangrove forest, just about 5 km one way. ... read more

Ok so we picked up the Space Shuttle from Auckland and it is bright Orange with nice white flashes with Space Shuttle written across it- Stellios from Easyjet would be proud. We were thinking of leaving it in a car park and taking an aerial photo and doing a 'Where's The Space Shuttle' book! along the same lines as 'Where's Wally' Oh and we feel the necessity to flash (with lights) everyone we see in the same van which has been about 2 so far! Ok so this bus is to be our home for 2 weeks!!!! We drove up from Auckland to Whangarei via Goat Island and along the East Coast- what a beautiful country. They say it is like England hundreds of years ago and i can see why. It is so green and ... read more

Ok, so if Monday was the best day... i guess Tuesday was another best day! We got off to an early start, packed our backpacks and Marc got the boat ready, and we all headed off to do a bit of fishing on our way to Hole in the Rock, where Mel and I jumped off the boat, onto the cliffs to climb up to the lighthouse of Cape Brett, from where we enjoyed the fantastic views along the cliff on the Cape Brett hiking track. WOW, amazing. We did not see anyone all day (no wonder, since there is really no access to the trail, other than daring to jump of a boat and when you get done hiking, to jump back onto a boat ) anyhow, it was amazing, quite a bit of up ... read more
