Aotearoa is the Māori name for New Zealand and it is translated to mean "Land of the Long White Cloud", literally though I think it means White Cloud Long! The Māoris like to keep things simple when it comes to naming things, a word repeated means "very", “wh” is really an “f”, and after two months, I still don’t know the proper way to pronounce half of them! ------------- Kia Ora Mates (Hello My Friends)… it has come time to leave this Garden of Eden and start my travels home. Tomorrow afternoon I will leave Auckland and head to Tahiti for a few relaxing days before a quick stop in LA and then home. But before I go, I figured I'd tell ya all about Paihia and the beautiful Bay of Islands. Friday 12/29/06 Head to ... read more

Woah, can't believe Christmas and New Year have come and gone...as usual it's been a whirlwind few weeks... I'm still loving life as a gelato scooper although it's been getting busier and busier lately and so I end up returning home quite exhausted...New Year's day ended up being way busier than expected and my cheeks actually hurt after 11 hours of continuous smiling...got to the point where my brain stopped functioning (no rude comments please ) and so I ended up just staring at a customer as I couldn't figure out which button to press on the till...not sure how good that was for ensuring returning custom...now have an American colleague who is just awesome to work with...when asked what a hazelnut was she replied "it's a nut"...I was in stitches...a kid was given a free ... read more

Monday 18th December No early morning start, much to our relief. We left the campsite on foot, heading just around the corner to the Hururu falls. They weren't spectacular compared to what we've seen in the past and so we didn't loiter in the vacinity long. We set off along the track towards the area called Waitangi, passing through a mangrove forrest on the way - spying some crabs in the mud as well. Waitangi is the birth place of modern New Zealand as it was in these grounds that the Treaty of Waitangi was signed by 45 or so Maori chiefs in 1840, which gave Britain sovereignty over the whole country. The grounds had changed hands many times since but were presented to New Zealand so the history could be preserved. We soon found a ... read more

Sun 17 Dec Today we picked up our chariot that would take us around NZ, a stunning beast of a 1.5 automatic Nissan Pulsar, with nearly 99,000 km on the clock. Unfortunately as soon as we left Auckland there was no radio reception so it appears many of our journeys will be made in silence, that is when we're not talking politics, economics and that sort of thing. So the first place we opened up the little bad boy was on the SH1 to Waitangi, 'the single most symbolic place in NZ for Maori and pakeha (settlers)'. We checked out the Treaty of Waitangi - the founding doc of NZ, still a cause of contention between Maori and the British settlers. Also saw the the commemmorative Treaty Meeting House, and a pretty massive canoe celebrating the ... read more

Turns out I run Paihia...!!! Paihia is pretty small and my friend Christina (from London) and I both seem to work at core news centres...at any given moment one of us should be able to give you the low down on pretty much any of the "local" backpackers as we seem to know enough people who know people...we're particularly handy when it comes to spreading rumours although we do try and keep them accurate (when convenient) ...it's very weird meeting people and already knowing something about them...am sure some of the information will come in real handy if I ever need cash (numerous blackmail opportunities available)... Most of the long termers have packed their bags and headed off to explore the rest of New Zealand (and other parts of the world)...I was very sad to see ... read more

Sunday 10 December We left Cambridge and followed the mighty Waikato river north along SH1 until the anal probe otherwise known as the Sky Tower came into view to herald our arrival back into Auckland. Finding our way easily back to Queen Street, we checked back into the Kiwi International and had some lunch before filling the afternoon with the internet and scouting the Backpackers' Car Market in readiness for tomorrow, although we did get some interest at the hostel itself from two Israeli girls. Monday Simon was up early to take Max over to Joshua Motors for his WOF and we then met up and wandered back to the market to get a spot booked. At this point we weren't feeling too optimistic as the place was very busy and appeared to be a buyers' ... read more
