Hello again! We have decided to leave Ponsonby and move to Mount Eden and a hostel called Bamber House. It's really nice here although doesn't have wifi so we will be moving again over the next few days. Havent really been upto much lately, just waiting for Caroline's nursing registration to come through so she can begin work. I wil then do some work too. In the meantime we have been overdosing on Sylvester Stallone movies, having bought the Rambo Trilogy and Rocky box sets on DVD. I figure that with the local cinema charging $15 each for a ticket plus loads for popcorn and drinks, it'c cheaper to buy dvds and watch them (I get to keep them too!) Will update more when we move again including some pictures. There is a hostel in Parnell ... read more

Hay Everybody! Well we got to Auckland on Wednesday & it is cold!!!!!!!!!!! Lots of wind so even when its sunny its still freezing!!! Never mind the Hostel is really nice, very clean and in a really nice postion, out of the main drag of Auckland, but a little treck into town. We have not really explored much so far as it rained lots on thursday & we only went to the local supermarket for food. In the evening we met with Zac's friends from ipswich for a drink & are planning to meet up again when they get back into Auckland (they have gone on a tour until friday). Friday we spent time in the city centre exploring the shops & today we wondered into Mt Eden village, which was lovely. Tommorow we are planning ... read more

We were determined today to steer well clear of all things shop-related and decided to pay a visit to Mount Eden, one of the many volcanic remnants nestled around the greater Auckland area. It was a cool, windy day and we were grateful of our microfleeces which keep us toasty and warm. It took us about an hour to reach the base of the 'mount' and we were amused to see a group of teenagers enjoying themselves on an aerial slide that was probably meant for smaller kids. I was tempted to join in and have a go too but we had some hill climbing to do first. The area around the foot of the hill is essentially parkland, with a kiddies' play area and big open grassy spaces where we watched one young man enthusiastically ... read more

Well, I can almost let the photos do the talking in this entry, but i know how much you enjoy my monthly words of wisdom, so i'll let you in on the latest round of adventures. So as a present to myself, I organised to go down to Queenstown for the weekend after my half marathon run. I’d managed to book some flights in August for just $150 return, which when you consider its nearly 2 hours flying time is a pretty good deal, as the photos show too, as i’d got a window seat the views on the way down were pretty spectacular. I’ve said it before, but its great flying away for the weekend, especially as travel in New Zealand’s ‘geopolitically stable’ environment is still pretty laid back, with not a latex glove nor ... read more

Matt and I went for our Greenpeace interview yesterday. It was much different than we expected and we were almost an hour late, which was not a good. We are still working at the hostel in the mornings (from 10am to 1 pm) so that we can stay for free. It's pretty easy work, just gross and tedious. So, that is to say that we get done at one and had to be in Mt. Eden (about 5 km away) by two. We needed to shower to get the gunk off us from scrubbing walls so that set us back a little farther. When I spoke to the Greenpeace lady on the phone, she told us that there is a bus right up the road from us that we could catch to get to Mt. Eden. ... read more

"The use of travelling is to regulate imagination by reality" -Samuel Johnson Well, everything was going a bit too well for me. I scored a cheap one way ticket to New Zealand from Australia and was leaving on the 31st.....the only problem is that New Zealand doesn't let anybody without an Australian passport enter the country without a return flight out...which leaves me asking...how did they sell me a one way ticket into the country in the first place...a heads up on this one would have been nice...my advice for airlines, less money spent on giving out purple socks and more time on assuring that people can get in and out of countries. So, I got to the airport and find this out, and then have to book a return ticket into Australia....okay, no big deal. ... read more

Hi everyone! Bonjour tout le monde! Just arrived in Noumea in New Caledonia to visit my brother and I finally can use a decent computer to update this travel blog. So I'm backtracking to New Zealand/North Island and letting you have a glimpse of my wonderful trip there. I stayed in this wonderful house in Birkenhead, an area of Auckland with Christina and David and their cute little new dog called Poppy who just arrived the day before I arrived. The weather was not great, but the welcome I got very warmhearted. After 2 nights at their house, I headed off at 7am on a "magic bus" tour to the Bay of Islands where I stayed for 3 nights in Paihia YHA. I met nice people on the bus and we ended up having drinks and ... read more

Hi guys, its been a while. Time continues to tick by on the other side of the earth, summer has finally started to make its first appearances, although saying that, i'm specifically sat in an internet cafe today to avoid the worst of the weather, which finally arrived at lunchtime. I’m also glad that I got my wipers changed on my new vehicle which has made driving around town a little less hazardous. So, this week I have promised for you a much less dramatic (if similarly intrepid) tale than my last entry, which even I fear reading, I have been taking it much easier. I’ve been having some physio as a result of my car accident, which has been going pretty well, and after all even I know that a twice weekly neck and shoulder ... read more

Well, it sure has been an eventful couple of weeks.. I managed to finally free myself from the grips of Auckland and get down to the Coromandel a couple of weeks back, the idea was to take a break and catch up with some well-earned rest and relaxation, it seems however that those in charge had other plans. I ambled down to the Coromandel on Saturday morning, taking breakfast in Thames, it was a wonderful sunny day. I stopped for breakfast and then drove over the mountains and did a bit of giant kauri spotting on the way to the east coast, where I headed for Cathedral Cove. Cathedral Cove, you may have seen before, its appeared on a dozen arty greetings cards, which you can probably purchase at WHSmith. I’ve taken care to include photos ... read more

Make a note, never move into your new residence under cover of the night Awakened by a 2-stroke roar at 3am in the morning, I should have but two and two together, but it was only when I walked to work in the revealing light of day that I noted that I actually live 3 doors down from the Auckland Chapter of the Hells Angels Motorcycle Club. That’s just great. ‘Nevermind’ I was told,, “At least its not The Mongrel Mob” ( a notorious kiwi gang), Er ok that’s alright then…phew that was a lucky escape. It was only when further examining the house noticeboard, that I saw the letter from our 2 wheeled guardians dated June, regarding there intention to host a 43rd Anniversary Party, that must have been fun, they seemed quite civil though, ... read more
