Hello, It's 10:30 on Sunday February 17th as I write this, and I am sitting in the computer lab of my hostel. Over the last couple days, I have seen alot of the city. On Thursday, I took a tour of the city, on Friday I went to a beach in Mission Bay, and yesterday I went to a super 14 rugby match. All of these things were pretty interesting, so I'll give you a little rundown. On Thursday, I got picked up outside of my hostel at 10 15 by Kiwi Experience, a travel company who gives free tours of the city and then tries to get you to buy other national packages. I barely got up in time, at 9 45, because I had stayed up til 5 the night before. Long story. But ... read more

Arrival: Thursday, February 7th, Day 2 or 3? Well after 18 Hours on one plane, 2 hours in Sydney Australia, 3 on another flight , and then another 2 hours going through customs, I arrived in Auckland, New Zealand on a sunny, warm Thursday afternoon. Now what exactly happened to Wednesday I don’t know, but as far as im concerned, ive travelled to the future. Ok maybe not, the entire voyage did take 24+ hours, but it is an odd concept losing a whole day. Although I didn’t seem to feel very jet lagged, yet. Word of advice, when traveling to other countries, be prepared to have the full customs search if you plan to bring a tent or hiking boots, like I did. Apparently they need to check for insects and fungus. To do this ... read more

Well all, I finally got here and the trip from Singapore to Auckland via Brisbane was much tougher than the London Singapore leg thanks to Quantus (cheap bastards, don't want to give you more than two drinks per trip), a big fat aussie and a Maori sitting next to me on the planes. After messing up in Singapore trying to adjust timewise, I was running on empty and yes it is official "I CANNOT SLEEP ON PLANES". So I landed after being awake 20 hours straight again. Podger didn't even come out and collect me the prick so I met him in Sky city and we had a few to keep my head above water. Then we went back to his hostel and gathered up a group a went back out. Lasted well (32hrs) and fell ... read more

Finally wrapping up the New Zealand portion of our year abroad in Guatemala... After bidding Karen, Dave, Noah and Ana farewell in the golden light of the sun setting over Hahei, we hightailed it out to Thames to overnight in a crappy little hotel so that we would be well positioned to 'do' Aukland in a day. Our plan was to play tourist for the day, sleep in some cheap airport hotel, and head on home early the next morning. And that's pretty much what we did. We made this final day easy by just driving around to a couple of main tourist places (as recommended by an Auckland gal we met in the boiling water at the Hot Water Beach in Hahei): One Tree Hill This is an urban park which I believe is a ... read more

Hello again. I have more time than I thought to do this :) We actually stayed another day in Auckland as planned, unlike what I said at the end of my last message. I think I was really tired and didn't really know what I was talking about. I can't specifically answer each of your questions unforunately, but I can get a general sense as to what you guys want to know. So sorry mom, but you can write all of your questions down and I will answer them when I come home, or you can call me. Also, for those that do not know, Paul is keeping a blog as well and you can check it out at www.mytb.org/pmertens From your questions though it shounds like you want to know what the people are like ... read more

It was so strange arriving in Auckland after South America. It felt really English, especially as it was raining! Being so similar to home made us feel quite homesick; we expected to see friends and family, but of course you weren't there! We soon perked up, however, when we tucked in to our first fry up for 4 months and the sight of Wagamama, our second home in London, was also rather reassuring. Appropriately enough, given the jetlag, our first outing in Auckland was to a coffee festival. Bruce first discovered 'Flat Whites' in a Kiwi coffee place in Soho and was eager to sample them in the land of their birth. He was not disappointed. Even though I don't like coffee, I really enjoyed the festival, because they had a competition where they had to ... read more

Yes!!! Finally time to go back home. Caught a cab to the airport. Flight to Buenos Aires was delayed by two hours. Found out that we didnt need to pay departure tax as it was already included in our ticket so went crazy shopping duty free =)) Finally get on the the plane - arrive at Buenos Aries for a 6 hr transit and flight is delayed again by an 1hr or 2. Arrive in Auckland safe and sound and glad to back. Then I get stuck with Customs being interogated by NZ Customs for 2 - 3 hrs for trying to bring in Coco matte tea leafs (which I declared), that was a ordeal in itself and I thought I was dead meat when they started reading me my rights. Customs found nothing else so ... read more

I have decided to put all the places in chunks as opposed to smaller blog posts. Whats up New Zealand! Everyone has been absolutely hospitable and extremely nice. It was so nice to be here. Auckland is amazing. The first day I was here I just loafed around really but I eventually walked around the city center to see what was going on. Auckland is a very beautiful city and they have the tallest tower in the south pacific ranging at 326 meters which is approximately 1069 ft. Inside this tower is a casino, hotel, movie theater and a whole bunch of upscale things. I sat in the casino and played some games. I lost like $35 american dollars, but it was fun and I met some really nice people. All of the casino workers were ... read more

Ka mate! Ka mate! I bought a ticket to go and see the All Blacks-France rugby match in Eden Park just 2 days before the game. I took the cheapest seat so I was in the nice and noisy part of the stadium. Great atmosphere! It was very one sided with the ABs nearly always playing in the French team's side. The game ended 42-11 for New Zealand, and they didn't even seem to be pushing very hard. But I must say that many of the best French players stayed at home because of club duty. After the game, I met some French sports journalists who had been in the French team's dressing room; they said the players looked battered like they'd never seen them like that before and predicted a bigger defeat for the second ... read more

I finished at the Kiwi orchard a few days so I have really just been lazing around generally. A few of us from the hostel went kayaking up the river that is at the bottom of the hostel a few days which was pretty cool and all importantly FREE. I have now found another job doing pretty much the same thing as before but at a different orchard this time. The place is called Orangewood orchards. Orangewood is a bit misleading as it is actually a kiwi orchard. What is so wrong with kiwi wood?! Anyhow not to worry. The job starts in late march early April, so between now and then I have decided to familiarise myself with a bit of the north island for a few weeks. I am not entirely sure whereabouts on ... read more
